Barack Obama's policy switches are giving the Left whiplash

The Democratic nominee's policy pivots are causing anguish among liberals. He is no fool

Gerard Baker

Change, it turns out, wasn't all that it was cracked up to be. Having campaigned for the past year as the agent of transformation, the man who would lead an historic shift in America's political direction, Barack Obama is discovering that there is quite a lot he likes about the way things are.

Since securing the Democratic nomination a few weeks ago, the only change coming from the Illinois senator has been in what he seems to stand for. Last month he dropped his opposition to a Bill before Congress that would give telecoms companies immunity from prosecution for carrying out illegal wiretaps on potential terrorist suspects.

And when people become THIS freaking STUPID and inattentive to their freedoms, THIS is the candidate they deserve.

So, if Obama doesn’t want to bring the troops home until Iraq is stabalized, doesn’t that give him the same position as......George W. Bush.

Someone post that over at DU, they’ll have a heart attack.

Obama had to pander to the goofball left in order to beat Hillary and now he’s got to distance himself from the goofball left in order to try to fool the “independents” and “moderates”. In today’s cyberspace mass-media world, a wink and a nod doesn’t cut it anymore. The oily scumbag has boxed himself in, but good.

Gotta agree there. In any normal universe nobody with Obama's pedigree would even get laughably close to the nomination by a party, let alone any actual election to the highest office on the planet.

Heck... We're better at selecting a new American Idol than we are at selecting the next President.

Perhaps someone might suggest to the disenchanted Democrats that Mr. Nader needs some votes. I've read some of the DU comments; there are some very unhappy posters over there.

The author is acknowledging America is not and has never been a center-left country. Americans shun the Republican Party for being insufficiently conservative. There's no evidence Americans like higher taxes, bigger government or have an abiding desire to lose the War In Iraq. Or to lose their cherished guns. In the face of all these positions Obama is simply facing up to political reality: America is not all Blue and there are not enough liberals to get him elected President. No wonder the Left is upset.

Obama should ask McCain if he can be his Vice President seeing that he agrees with the Bush status quo. This would certainly be a change in the election process.

Barack Hussein Obama’s clumsy and overly transparent shift to the center shows how inexperienced and inept this man is.

He is a man of no convictions, ( unless it comes to killing unborn babies) that he will say and do anything to become President. He is the most pathetic of pandering politicians.

He will throw is grandmother, church, corrupt Chicago cronies under the bus.

And now he has thrown his Iraq position under the bus.

I won't be surprised if Barack Hussein Obama makes the statement the he is not the Barack Hussein Obama that Barack Hussein Obama knew.....

I am waiting for Obama to declare he admires Ronald Reagan and thinks his domestic policy worked for this country. I'm just getting cynical.

"There appears to be no issue that Barack Obama is not willing to reverse himself on for the sake of political expedience. This is the change he promised , This reality of his so called change, shows him to be a typical lying liberal politician."

"You can be sure there will never be any clear answers from Obama on any critical issue. He is quite comfortable taking positions that contradict each other. Sadly, his inconsistent and dishonest positions are perfectly acceptable to his Obamabot cult members, who blindly follow him."

But a political analyst I listened to said it was an obvious ploy to get votes; once elected, he said, look out- it’s a turn to the hard left.

Americans shun the Republican Party for being insufficiently conservative.

More to the point, when most Americans are told what real conservatives actually stand for, any why they stand for them, they find themselves in agreement with most of those things. How many Republicans offer any justification for their positions?

It is simple strategy.

When running for your parties endorsement, give them what the majority of the party wants. If it is 50% liberal whacko and 20 percent liberal and 30% semi-liberal, give ‘em LIBERAL.

Now that you have that sewn up, you gotta go for the center of your new audience the whole US demographic.

‘Course, in “intelligent” times, the electorate would have been insulted by your lack of respect for their intelligence and their powers of observation. They were too intelligent to be duped by mere words changed so easily.

I’ve been to the mall. I’ve seen america.

I think he has a strong chance of winning.

But if Bush orchestrates a collapse of oil prices before November (or they otherwise collapse), all bets are off.
