Following is from a 1974 interview with Senator Helms:
Well, I think it's sheer folly to try to expand the base on any ethnic ratio. I would hope that we would expand the base by attracting all people, whatever their race, whatever age, religion, and all the rest of it, who share the fundamental concerns of what I believe the Republican party should be . . . I think we should take our stand, win or lose, and let it all hang out. If we try to cajole and compromise, that's the road to defeat. The Republican party has no future because the Democratic party has demonstrated through the years, for a generation now, that it intends to buy votes any way that they can be bought. These give-away programs, welfare and all the rest of them. Now, I don't want to be a Republican, a successful Republican, on that basis. I would rather be a private citizen. The Republicans may as well make up their mind that the left-wing spectrum has already been pre-empted. It's not available to them. Furthermore, if they . . . even if they could move in there, it would be intellectual dishonesty.
Rest in peace Senator NO!
How fitting that he passed on the Fourth of July, one of the great patriots of the 20th century!
He was an enemy of Communism when other Senators embraced their leaders. He was a friend of Tibet when Richard Gere and other lefties were still in diapers. He fought the Panama Canal give away and now we see the Chinese controlling the ports.
It will be sad, but somewhat illustrative that what happens in Chapel Hill/Carrboro, North Carolina tonight will show the country just how tolerant the liberals of America truly are.
This truly saddens me. About a year and a half ago I began to play the piano for a choir from my church, who went once a month to sing at the nursing home where Jesse was a resident. Let me tell you, that man had joy shine through his face as he kept time with the hymns and sang along. He would often use his arm almost as if he were conducting right along from where he sat. He was a sweetheart. Last October was the last time that I was there as we ended up leaving that church. I have thought of him often since.
God bless you, Jesse. You touched my heart and I’ll never forget you.
Indeed.
Rest in peace, Mr. Helms. May the angels meet you at the door with East Carolina barbecue and cornbread.
Comfort to his family, and may he rest in the peace that he so deserves. Farewell, Senator Helms.....
R.I.P.
RIP, Jesse.
“Passed on the 4th of July.”
The was m;y first thought, too. Totally fitting. Both Jefferson and John Adams also died on the Fourth ... fifty years after the signing of the Declaration.
My favorite thing Jesse did, or tried to do, was in the early-mid 80’s, suggesting a buyout or takover of CBS to get some conservative perspective in the media. Wonderful he lived to see cable and internet give the MSM a run for its money.
How fitting that he died on Independence Day - he was a true patriot and we certainly miss a man with principles these days.
We have virtually no stalwarts like him left today.
Try to explain him to a young person and they are all “but, he was a.....”
the social engineering left has thoroughly whipped our asses
brainwashed most conservatives as well
politics now can be judged on virtually one issue that affects only 11.8% of the population.
Those in NC know just how good a Senator he was as Senator Helms' office helped a lot of individuals with problems from our government.
May God bless him abundantly and encourage his family at this difficult time.
Schwarzeneggar has been about what I expected, or worse. It was sad that he was the only responsible choice a conservative could make at the time, as I explained at great length in a post devoted to that question. Sad state of affairs, when he’s the best viable candidate we can muster. Sad state, period.
And I don’t for the life of me see what that has to do with Helms’ passing. If you want an argument that Schwarzeneggar is no Helms, you’ll have to find someone other than me to argue with.
RIP to a great American and Patriot.
On this Independence Day, may the Lord liberate His servant Jesse from all earthly cares, and welcome his spirit into His eternal Presence...
RIP, Mr. Helms
Jesse Alexander Helms, Jr. will be recorded alongside the greatest senators in history like Daniel Webster and Henry Clay. He held his ground when lesser men and women played “go along to get along.” I’m sure that he will be shaking hands in heaven not only with the greatest U.S. Senators in histroy, but two other authors of liberty who crossed the bar to heaven on the 4th of July: John Adams and Thomas Jefferson.
Rest in Peace Senator Helms. My thoughts and prayers are with the good Senator's family today.
And James Monroe.
Godspeed Senator Helms. You have definately earned your rest in Heaven.
Thanks for the ping, Girl. Saddened to hear this, he was a great man.
May he Rest In Peace and God Bless his family.
RIP, Senator Helms. Prayers for the family.
AMEN!
Amen! Jesse Helms - a GIANT among our nation’s Senators - free from the corruption and selfish greed that dominates the US Senate today.
How we miss you, Senator Helms! How our nation needs more SERVANTS like you in our nation’s capital and our state’s capitals.
You embodied the very ideals of our founders, George Washington leading by his example in his day - of the citizen politician who did his job and then went home to be with his family.
Thanks to your love of our country and of our God, and of your life living out that love you had for both, millions today across this world live in freedom who were enslaved by communism.
You stood up and said, “NO”, to communism and along with President Reagan, whose election you helped ensure, the people of Poland, of Czechoslavakia, of East Germany, et all - and even the people of Russia - have had several decades of living out from the brutal boot of the communist thugs whom you so loathed.
You stood up and said “NO” effectively in the US Senate when most others of weaker stature and character would have folded to the waves of ridicule and criticism and liberal challengers who wanted to silence you and those whom you represented so well!
I am privileged to have known you since my youth and call your family friends. God bless and comfort all your beloveds today, especially your wife Dot.
May you be sharing the delight of all those who have gone before who are in the presence of our living, loving, Lord Jesus.
The world, our nation, our state, our city, our community have been made better by your having lived among us, with courage and boldness and a fierce love for freedom that touched multiplied millions. Your love of your fellow citizens of North Carolina, and your determination to serve them all, no matter what race, what gender, what economic level - was so effective that your example of what a U.S. Senator should be and do for his constituents is simply unmatched.
We love you, Jesse!
This is Reuters’ “tribute” to Jesse Helms:
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Former Republican Sen. Jesse Helms, a leading conservative from North Carolina who served five terms in the Senate before retiring in 2003, has died, CNN said. He was 86.
Helms, a blunt-talking product of the Old South, was known as “Senator No” for opposing just about anything that obstructed his conservative view of the world.
That is their entire obituary.
Indeed, it is fitting for a patriot to die on the 4th of July.
May he rest in peace.
A man who did a lot of good things with his office. May he rest in peace.
Yes. On the same day, 50 years to the day of the signing. I've always been astounded by that historical fact.
The media and ivory tower spent decades trying to ruin him and his work by tying him to unsavory things, and they failed. RIP Mr Helms.
Stalwart patriot and senator...
Good and decent man.
Reuters = scum
Well done, thy good and faithful servant. Enter into thy rest that hast been prepared for thee.
Thank you, Lord, for Jesse Alexander Helms. Bless him for standing for what is right and true.
Thank You for giving him to us in trying times.
Please send more like him. We have no one in the US Senate of his caliber.
And thank You, that like Jefferson and John Adams, he went Home on the day that meant so much to him—the Fourth of July.
We got the message.
So happy to hear that report from you on seeing Senator Helms in the nursing home where he spent his last few years. Yes, indeed, Senator Helms knew and loved his Savior Jesus Christ and reflected the joy of knowing HIM and serving HIM all through his life.
May his family rejoice in their knowledge that this giant of a man, this champion of freedom from communist butchery and from the damage that liberalism/socialism has done to this nation and to the world, was also their loving, doting grandfather, father, husband, uncle, brother - and that he was a shining witness to the truth of the gospel of Jesus Christ...right up to his last days on this earth.
Well done, Senator Helms, good and faithful servant of your Lord.

A decent and courageous man.
One of the good guys.
RIP, Mr. Helms.
I am sorry to hear this.
RIP Jesse Helms.
A fitting day for a great conservative and great American to pass on.
The left are already out calling him a racist..
On the 4th of July. Appropriate.
I think I am going to cry. What a great American. He was an inspiration to me as a young conservative in the 1970s and 80s. He always stood up to Soviet tyranny and I will forever admire him for that. He loved his country so it is indeed appropriate he be called from this life on Independence Day.
Prayers for the family....
