Kansas GOP’s conservative-moderate split hasn’t healed yet

A year ago, Steve Howe stood in front of the Johnson County Courthouse to announce his campaign for district attorney.

Behind him were about 15 supporters from a broad spectrum of the Republican Party, including his two campaign managers: Charlotte O’Hara, a conservative from Olathe, and Greg Musil of Overland Park, from the party’s moderate wing. In April, they rallied behind him again.

It was a stunning show of Kansas GOP unity after many years of divisive intraparty politics.

But don’t think the rift between conservative and moderate Republicans has closed. The wound may have scabbed over some, but it continues to fester.

Just before the June 10 filing deadline this year, five conservatives jumped into Republican primaries across the state against sitting senators who are considered moderates. Now, leading up to the Aug. 5 primary, Republicans are waging an intraparty struggle to control the Kansas Senate.

For the last 15 years, the party factions have fought each other over abortion, spending, taxes, immigration and gay rights issues, without much regard for party unity. Some say that is changing.

Kris Kobach, the party’s state chairman, says the state’s GOP is more unified than it has been in many years.

But ask Stephen Cloud, the state party’s national committeeman, and you’ll get a different answer. He cites the five Senate filings as just one sign that the feud is still on.

“It’s worse than it has ever been,” he said.

Anyone who wonders how Kansas can wind up with a Democratic governor, Attorney General, and two Congressmen, this is why.

If it takes promoting the Homosexual agenda and the agenda of the Democrats why not just run as a Democrat.

But don’t think the rift between conservative and moderate Republicans has closed.

That's because "moderate Republicans" is a euphemism for "wannabe Democrats with Socialist tendencies."

The moderate Republicans in this state would disagree. But I guess they haven't asked you for the correct definition yet.

No, he's right. There are Republicans/conservatives and RINO’s.
Republicans for Moore would be a good example.

It’s time to roll up the big tent. It pretty much fell in on itself. (Lack of support.)

Yep. When you knock out all the center poles, that’s what tents do.

“Moderate Republicans” are Democrats who change parties to get elected in a Republican state. Think disgraced former AG Morrison, who changed from RAT to ‘pub, then resigned when he was caught boinking his secretary on state funds. Most Rat pols in KS are wholly owned by Tiller the baby killer, esp Sebilius.

There in lies the problem. You look at anyone who doesn't march in complete lock-step with you as a Rino and not a Republican. Well why should he support you come election time? The state GOP has been split between by social conservatives, who are basically one-issue conservatives, and political conservatives. So far as the social conservatives are concerned anyone who is not in 100% agreement with them is a Rino. So if their candidate doesn't win, they stay home. If their candidate does win, then those they have been disparaging as Rinos either stay home or vote for the opponent. And the Democrats win elections.

But don’t think the rift between conservative and moderate Republicans has closed.

The proper term to accurately describe the "moderate republican" of today is "DEMOCRAT".

Actually, I prefer to call it separating the wheat from the chaff, the wolf from the sheep, the Republicans from the Democrat/RINO/Socialists.
Plus, the “one issue” is a bogus premise, usually used by RINO’s to push their liberal agenda. If we would return to the Reagan conservative foundations we would find the RINO’s would be the ones to come back to the fold and stop voting for liberals.
Moving to the left to pick up “moderates” has done nothing but lose us both houses and now potentially the presidency.

If we returned to Regan's conservative foundations we'd still have a considerable percentage of one-issue conservatives.
