I would guess the opposite: He is now highlighting (coloring) his hair with some gray so that he does not look like a 12 year old.

Well, he is going to be 47 in 4 weeks. I’d say he has some gray hairs of his own, so I’ll bet he’s been using something to cover it previously. I think it would be hard to try to highlight it gray, and have it look natural because it’s so short.
