Eight hurt on first day of Spanish bull run

MADRID (Reuters) - Eight people have been taken to hospital, mainly for bruising and concussion, on the first day of the annual bull running festival in the northern Spanish town of Pamplona on Monday, organizers said.

Three people had concussion, one had chest injuries, three suffered bruising and one was grazed by a bull's horn. No details were available as to the seriousness of the injuries, but no one was gored.

The San Fermin running of the bulls is a long tradition. It was made famous by Ernest Hemingway's novel "The Sun also Rises," a semi-autobiographical account of an alcohol-fuelled visit to the festival by a group of squabbling British and American friends in the 1920s.

The bulls are usually killed later by bullfighters.

Dozens of semi-naked animal rights activists held a protest in Pamplona on Saturday by lying on the ground along the course of the bull running, with imitation barbs -- usually plunged into the shoulders of bulls at the start of a bullfight -- stuck to their own shoulders.

Does it make me a bad person to cheer the bulls when they finally catch one of the idiots and trounces them?

Not at all. I always root for the bulls. Especially during bull fights.

Nope. I always want the bulls to win and person who gets hurt deserves it.

It doesn't necessarily make you a bad person, but it does put you on the same side as these guys :0(

I say: good luck to these Spaniards who run before the bulls. It is both foolish and brave, and very Spanish.

I yelled “YES” once when the bull tossed a guy about ten feet in the air and got a lot of nasty looks by people.

I really don’t think a lot know what they do to them in the ring, and how they die slow and painful while scared. I hunt all the time, but I kill clean and fast and do anything I can to make sure the animal doesn’t suffer. These people actually relish the pain the bull goes through.

We should make our Senators enter the Bull Run, then you would not feel guilty when cheering on the Bulls!

Things you don’t do.

1. You don’t swim with sharks unless you expect to get bit.

2. You don’t pet a lion, unless you expect to get bit.

3. You don’t anger a bunch of bulls and let them loose in the streets unless you expect to get gored.

I have no sympathy for these people.

My husband hunts but was horrified when he saw they put their horns on fire. There is killing to eat, but not torturing for fun.

Bhah! Never clump me in with those idiots. I have been a hunter my whole life, but I don’t believe in letting anything suffer. Quick and clean or it really bothers me, I will take a head shot even on a nice rack if I can so it drops fast. Killing is a part of life, but this is more like torture than sport IMHO.

I’m always more concerned about the bulls as they have no choice in the matter but to be set out onto the street and run. I saw one’s back legs go out from under him and he was skidding. I didn’t think it was a bit humorous and I felt sorry for the bull. If the humans who can think and choose want to do this then if they get hurt I could care less. It’s all about choice for them. Not so for the bulls? They are at the mercy of the humans who are supposed to be caring for them.

This is not a sport by any stretch of the imagination. It’s stupidy by man and cruelty to animals.

I've been swatted in the face too many times while milking those old Jersey cows to risk running with Dem Bulls. I would much prefer to go fishing for catfish.

Watch Old Bossy cause when you get the milk bucket about half full she will stick a hoof in it. It then becomes cat food. This is just a nostastglic warning.

The observers are pieces of feces, too. They stand around with broken bottles, holding jagged edges in their hands. There used to be a picture of a poop chute hoisted up on a horn of a bull holding a broken bottle in his hand. I love that picture.

In the end, the animals suffer anyway, but I’m glad that the ____s also suffer.

I guess you are right on that but my next question is where is the heart and soul of anyone who could do that kind of thing for fun? My mother always told us to never trust anyone who would treat any animal in a cruel way and we never have. People who do that kind of thing are not who I would ever want to associate with. Oh and yes, then if an animal turns on them they shoot the animal.

Perhaps not sport as we know it here however, it seems to me they view it as a sporting event since they do the same thing every year. I’m not a PETA person either but this is outrageous to me.

I do not enjoy seeing these bulls forced to run through the streets. Many of the people running are tourists. Tourists also support the bullfights and I think it would die out if they didn’’t. Many of the younger generation over there are against it and it seems the only ones who really support bullfighting anymore are the oldtimers. However I have a lot of respect for the matadores who face those bulls. A large number get torned up by the animal’s horns and of course some die. I do not remember the figure but I was amazed when I heard how many actually are injured. The bulls they use are beautiful animals. Unfortunately once bullfighting is outlawed there will be no more reason to breed them and they will become extinct.

We will always have bulls but we will not have Miura bulls, a breed which is especially deadly, so deadly that some matadores refuse to fight them.

I think the playfield should be leveled. The bulls aren’t used to run on paved streets. They need some sand to keep the push and balance and aim correctly.

That would be a fair run.
