As I wrote about a few months ago in an article entitled Why Bush is Quiet on Tibet, Mr. Bush is simply adhering to a foreign policy towards China that was in place long before he was elected to office. Since 1979, when the United States officially switched diplomatic recognition of China from Taipei to Beijing, Washington has seemed to have had a special place in its heart for the Communist giant. The unique and yet often tumultuous relationship that the U.S. and China have shared over the past almost thirty years is not based soley on economic incentives as many would like to claim. Mr. Bush, like other presidents before him, has observed the incredible progress that has been achieved by the Peoples Republic of China in the last thirty years. Unlike the countries of North Korea and Cuba, which are stagnant cesspools of totalitarianism and oppression, the political landscape in China has been greatly transformed...

Among the many government positions that GHWB held before he became vice-president, was Ambassador to China, so GWB had first hand knowledge and experience of what was changing in that country.

we would not want to be treated in an offensive manner when we host such events.
we are trading partners with china.
the chinese that i know are very bright and industrious.
the chinese people are moving forward to better lives and hopefully someday to greater freedom.
there are other venues to protest the chinese government.
there are many ethnic and religious splinter groups in china that will increasingly demand a voice.
china invaded tibet in 1953.

I don’t care if Bush attends or not, but of course, the Bush haters will critize him no matter what he does. (The same ones whining now would be whining if he didn’t go.)
Of course he should attend. Would you purposely insult your own creditors?
