PLANTATION, Fla. -- The family of one of the men who was shot by a retired United States Marine while they attempted to rob a Subway sandwich shop said the customer shouldn't have pulled the trigger.

According to Plantation police, two armed men barged into the Subway at 1949 Pine Island Road shortly after 11 p.m. Wednesday, demanding money from the employee behind the counter. When they tried to force John Lovell into the bathroom, he pulled out a gun and shot both men, police said.

Maybe, just maybe, the robbers shouldn't have chosen a life of crime.

Given his age he probably got his DD-214 20 years ago. Why would his former service even come up?

“Police said Lovell, a retired Marine, wouldn’t be charged.”

Only the perp’s ‘grandparents’ called the shooting into question.

Lovell, 71, was the lone customer at the time. Police said he had a concealed weapons permit

Do not mess with old Marines. If you need killing there is a very high probability they will kill you.

"He should not have taken the law in his hands," said Rosa Jones, Gadson's grandmother.

Gadson shouldn't have been trying to rob the Subway. He and his accomplice got exactly what they deserved.

I guess the grandmother thinks he should've asked politely: "Gee, Mr. Armed Criminal, would you kindly let me go? I don't want to take the law into my own hands..."

Gadson's grandparents told Local 10 on Thursday that Lovell was wrong for pulling the trigger.

"He should not have taken the law in his hands," said Rosa Jones, Gadson's grandmother.

Man, is this ever stupid under all the circumstances.

Thank you John Lovell for protecting innocent life.

I bet the families of those seven employees at the Wendy's Restaurant who were herded into the walk-in refrigerator and shot in the head back in 2000 wish John Lovell had been there.

Here's an interesting bit of legal info - the surviving robber will probably face murder charges for the robber killed by the Marine:

http://pysih.com/2007/07/03/donicio-arrindell-and-fredrick-gadson/
"Fredrick Gadson will face a few felony charges, including murder. A product of the public school system, he was probably unaware that under Florida law, if you commit a felony like…oh….armed robbery, and it results in a death, you are responsible."

Why is she bitching? They made an aggressive action toward him by trying to force him into a back closet. That’s where they usually shoot witnesses. I would like to say I’m sorry this guy died, but what I’m really sorry about is that he didn’t choose middle class values. You know, honesty, hard work, respect for others. This grandmother should have worked to instill those traits in him instead of a sense of entitlement that allowed him to go into a store and try and take what wasn’t his.

Not only were they trying to rob Subway, they were trying to rob Subway at the point of a gun. AND they used their guns to try to force the man who shot them into the freezer.

IOW, the customer really didn’t even shoot until these cretins directly threatened human life.

Shows how much contempt she has for the victims of her dead gran-baby. Also shows how utterly stupid she is. The only one taking the law in their own hands was the dead kid and his buddy. The old guy was well within the law.

"A former marine should not have to work at a Subway shop."

He was not working there. He was a customer who wasn't even going to do anything about the armed robbery. That's the rub. If these clowns would have just taken their money and left they would most likely be alive today. He only shot them after the armed thugs attempted to force him into the bathroom. I think we know what would have happened if they had gotten him into the bathroom. Bang!! Would the scumbag's mother have been complaining about that? I wonder...

If anyone has a right to be mad here it's the fellow who was minding his own business and was forced to take the situation into his own hands by the actions of others. Trace it back to the beginning and it becomes apparent that he would not have had to display or use a weapon had it not been for the two who were breaking the law.

The former Marine was a customer, a regular customer of the Subway.

The courts have regularly held that the police are NOT responsible for the safety of individuals. (Castle Rock v Gonzales, is one case.) Also, just how is a “victim” to know the intentions of the criminal holding the gun? The criminal only wants your cash, TV, etc? The victim must ASSUME his/her life is at risk and chose, or not, to defend themselves. PERSONNALLY, I am fighting, like a MARINE.

But 71-year old John Lovell had a concealed weapons permit, and he didn't draw his handgun and fire until the suspects reportedly tried to force him into a bathroom.

Thank God and the Marine Corps, he may have saved many future victims’ lives.

Perps of this quality don’t usually downgrade their activities to candy bars and milk money.

The family members crying foul should instead examine the values of a culture that glamourizes violent behavior and start spanking their kids for being assclowns.

It's really is amazing...

Once you've taken out the trash, it becomes almost 2nd nature, with training and instincts taking over.

Sorta like riding a bike -- you don't forget, but you may become slower and the hills are impossible!

Good hit, Marine!

What’s really “hilarious” about the grandmother’s comment is that it was her grandson that truly was taking the law into his own hand-—deciding to grant himself permission to carry a gun and deciding to grant himself an exception to the laws on armed robbery, assault with a deadly weapon, etc.

John Lovell, OTOH, conducted himself under the law. He had the proper permit and he used his gun in a way that is perfectly permissible under the law.

The outlaw here was the grandson.

BTW, wonder where this grandson’s parents are?
