PLANTATION, Fla. -- The family of one of the men who was shot by a retired United States Marine while they attempted to rob a Subway sandwich shop said the customer shouldn't have pulled the trigger.
According to Plantation police, two armed men barged into the Subway at 1949 Pine Island Road shortly after 11 p.m. Wednesday, demanding money from the employee behind the counter. When they tried to force John Lovell into the bathroom, he pulled out a gun and shot both men, police said.

Perhaps these two should have considered another line of work..
Given his age he probably got his DD-214 20 years ago. Why would his former service even come up?
‘Zactly.
This is mind set (of the grandparents) enables children to be criminals.....they just can’t accept that choices always carry consequences.
Military people are evil natural born killers according to the media.
from the article
“Police said Lovell, a retired Marine, wouldn’t be charged.”
Only the perp’s ‘grandparents’ called the shooting into question.
“When seconds count, the police are only minutes away ...”
Poor tangs.
Offer them some cheese with their whine.
Do not mess with old Marines. If you need killing there is a very high probability they will kill you.
Gadson shouldn't have been trying to rob the Subway. He and his accomplice got exactly what they deserved.
“customer shouldn’t have pulled the trigger”
“What would you prefer, that they be pushed outta’ winda’s little girl?” - Archie Bunker
Yeah that’s what I thought they meant.
I’m sure the ‘family’ will be hiring a lawyer and suing everyone they can, even Subway.
It's happened before.
Thank God for concealed carry. If this had happened in New York City, the story might have been “unarmed man killed by robbers.”
God bless this Marine. I’m glad he did what he did and support him 100%. His parents are off their rocker.
Had it been Rosa Jones being herded into a bathroom to possibly be shot in the back of the head by a dirtbag criminal, I believe she’d have been more than happy to have a citizen kill her assaulter.
A former marine should not have to work at a Subway shop.
Added to banglist
Of course b/c the LSM always tries to impugn someone’s military service.
In England, land our our fathers, you are arrested for carrying a sharp knife to protect yourself, the cathedrals are empty examples of period architecture, and you can be thrown in jail for the hate-speech of quoting the King James Bible.
God Bless our Constitution, and God Bless America!
Why does the phrase “You messed with the WRONG Marine” come to mind?
I believe he was a customer...
I guess the grandmother thinks he should've asked politely: "Gee, Mr. Armed Criminal, would you kindly let me go? I don't want to take the law into my own hands..."
"He should not have taken the law in his hands," said Rosa Jones, Gadson's grandmother.
Man, is this ever stupid under all the circumstances.
Thank you John Lovell for protecting innocent life.
U.S. Marine - no better friend, no worse enemy. Semper Fi.
I bet the families of those seven employees at the Wendy's Restaurant who were herded into the walk-in refrigerator and shot in the head back in 2000 wish John Lovell had been there.
"Fredrick Gadson will face a few felony charges, including murder. A product of the public school system, he was probably unaware that under Florida law, if you commit a felony like oh .armed robbery, and it results in a death, you are responsible."
Ah... OK, that’s better.
There is a particularly appropriate story about trying to perform a sexual act on a bull and ending up getting the horn. Except, here the horn is a well directed bullet.
I don’t care if they were robbing the Subway or not. Try to herd me ANYWHERE at gunpoint, I am going to look for the very first opportunity to kill you. End of story. He had every right and in the law’s eyes, especially in Florida!
Why is she bitching? They made an aggressive action toward him by trying to force him into a back closet. That’s where they usually shoot witnesses. I would like to say I’m sorry this guy died, but what I’m really sorry about is that he didn’t choose middle class values. You know, honesty, hard work, respect for others. This grandmother should have worked to instill those traits in him instead of a sense of entitlement that allowed him to go into a store and try and take what wasn’t his.
Not only were they trying to rob Subway, they were trying to rob Subway at the point of a gun. AND they used their guns to try to force the man who shot them into the freezer.
IOW, the customer really didn’t even shoot until these cretins directly threatened human life.
He was the only customer there at the time. He wasn’t working there.
“He should not have taken the law in his hands,” said Rosa Jones, Gadson’s grandmother.
Shows how much contempt she has for the victims of her dead gran-baby. Also shows how utterly stupid she is. The only one taking the law in their own hands was the dead kid and his buddy. The old guy was well within the law.
No mention of parents, which just might be part of the problem.
With family THAT stupid - it’s easy to see how the stupidity of the perps was secured.
It’s in the DNA.
He was getting a sandwich. He was the only customer in the store at the time. Thank God he was there or the clerks might be dead today.
Or, "seven unarmed employees executed by robbers".
See post #28.
Yep. A headshot and a shot to the chest definitely says “You messed with the wrong Marine!”
The former Marine was a customer, a regular customer of the Subway.
The courts have regularly held that the police are NOT responsible for the safety of individuals. (Castle Rock v Gonzales, is one case.) Also, just how is a “victim” to know the intentions of the criminal holding the gun? The criminal only wants your cash, TV, etc? The victim must ASSUME his/her life is at risk and chose, or not, to defend themselves. PERSONNALLY, I am fighting, like a MARINE.
Right:
Former Marine's Actions Called Into Question
What's the reasoning behind all the interest in suddenly revisiting a year old story?
71 and still contributing to society. Whadda guy!
Semper Fi.
Thank God and the Marine Corps, he may have saved many future victims’ lives.
Perps of this quality don’t usually downgrade their activities to candy bars and milk money.
The family members crying foul should instead examine the values of a culture that glamourizes violent behavior and start spanking their kids for being assclowns.
It's really is amazing...
Once you've taken out the trash, it becomes almost 2nd nature, with training and instincts taking over.
Sorta like riding a bike -- you don't forget, but you may become slower and the hills are impossible!
Good hit, Marine!
Yeah.. Darwin should be pleased with the outcome...
What’s really “hilarious” about the grandmother’s comment is that it was her grandson that truly was taking the law into his own hand-—deciding to grant himself permission to carry a gun and deciding to grant himself an exception to the laws on armed robbery, assault with a deadly weapon, etc.
John Lovell, OTOH, conducted himself under the law. He had the proper permit and he used his gun in a way that is perfectly permissible under the law.
The outlaw here was the grandson.
BTW, wonder where this grandson’s parents are?
