Conservatives have rarely been comfortable with Sen. John McCain and they're worried that the presumptive Republican presidential nominee will try to mess with the basic GOP platform that "currently reflects the policies and principles of President Bush," Michael D. Shear tells us this morning. Conservatives seem to have particular concerns about McCain's views on global warming, immigration, stem cell research and campaign finance.
We don't ask our Readers Who Comment to identify their political leanings, but many of those who have filed on this article seem to be Democrats, because they're enjoying the fight. Some who seem to come from the GOP are wringing their hands, and one particularly disaffected poster has on three occasions since the story went up stated strong support for Libertarian Bob Barr. Others offer political analysis, often suggesting that the center is where America wants to be.

On an unrelated note, this comment was funny...
I think Mrs. Obama looks like Sasquatch in a dress.

What’s the point of starting a fight over this? Platforms are meaningless, and this would give the media something to crow about throughout the convention.
I think Mrs. Obama looks like Sasquatch in a dress.....
Didn’t Janet Reno seem closer to Sasquatch?....It could be a toss-up though....
More media rabble to create battle among the right.
Conservatives vs. McCain = Conservatives allied with hussein obama and marxism.
Better a rino than a marxist surrender monkey.
Also, there are laws in some states protecting sasquatch. You could go to jail for liable against him with that statement regarding ms hussein obama.
Exactly. As far as I can gather it is the Washington post starting a fight over this. They desire disunity among the Right. Ignore them at all costs.
I never said that! It was a poster on The Washington Post's Web site. I thought it was funny if only for the "wtf???" quality of the quote.
:^)
LOL, If they want to "start a fight" and bring "disunity" to the "right", they're a little late to the fray.
That is funny coming from you.
Funny, those creatures do not seem to be wearing a dress.
Pantsuit, maybe, but it is hard to tell.
But as far as conservatives being uncomfortable with McCain, that is nothing new. McCain did not ever have that much ambition to emulate Reagan, or even the Senator’s seat whom he inherited, Barry Goldwater (who was really more of a libertarian than a conservative).
McCain has always been a “maverick” (I think Ford built a less than memorable vehicle back in the 1970’s that carried that designation). The conservatives were more of his opponents than most of the Democrat delegation in the US Senate. The conservatives did not set up that distinction, McCain did.
Well, of course, the Post is trying to stir up trouble and division among Republicans, as usual. But they don’t really need to bother, since unfortunately what they say in the headline is true.
As for changing the platform, the Big Tent RINOs have been trying to do that every four years since the days of Nelson Rockefeller. Of course it’s divisive and destructive, but they don’t care. They want their abortions and their fetal stem cells and their gay rights.
And should McCain become president, those that support McCain will have to shoulder the blame for the downfall of the American nation.
Amen to that. Limited government all the way. Very well said.
“Conservatives vs. McCain = 90 percent of Free Republic”
He’s earned every bit of opposition he’s recieved and then some.
“As far as I can gather it is the Washington post starting a fight over this. They desire disunity among the Right.”
Like there isn’t enough disunity over that jackass being the Republican nominee?
Amen.
It’s really a lose/lose situation at this point
This thread should be REnamed
CONSERVATIVES FOR OBAMA
Because you will get a racist, former muslim, pro-abortion, gun banner and anti-military President if you continue to undermine mccain.
Unless 90% of FR are rino's and moderates then yes, FR will have to shoulder the blame. However, you're barking up the wrong tree, windfinger!
“Because you will get a racist, former muslim, pro-abortion, gun banner and anti-military President if you continue to undermine mccain.”
Obama is a piece of unadulterated garbage that would be a disaster for this nation. McCain’s ONLY saving grace? He’s not named Obama! Both men represent horribly dangerous futures for this nation, both are equally frightening.
When these became the top two “choices,” was the day that America lost.
“Conservatives vs. McCain = 90 percent of Free Republic and, if Obama becomes president, will have to shoulder the blame for the downfall of the American nation. “
Oh, please you go right ahead and support the candidates you let the media pick for us. “BY THE PEOPLE”...that mean ANYTHING to you?
Right, I'm a conservative who will take the blame for allowing this to happen because I sat on my ass and kept voting rino after rino because going the way of the LOTE had to be better. Well, I'm here to scream to you McCainiacs after ten short years this is what we have come too. LOSER MODERATES - back to the STUPID party! Well, I refuse to ever vote for another loser moderate/rino backstabbing, liberal coddling, DBM/dem ass kissing prick!
NO MORE RINO'S!!!!
If McCain becomes president, you will need a flame suit which would withstand 1 full week on the surface of the sun.
If 90% of the Freepers agree on a subject, that tells you what?
...listening to a McCain ad blaming me on Global Warming now
If McCain gets in, it’s a pretty safe bet we won’t get the opportunity to vote for a conservative GOP nominee again... ever (or at least in my lifetime). If Obama gets in, we at least get another chance to do the right thing in 2012.
For the record, I did not vote for Perot. Still kicking myself for that.
drzz, it's not just the Freepers crowd.
In Florida, a critical state for McCain, only 20 of George Bush's top 55 fund raisers have written a personal check to McCain.
This guy is a catastrophe for the GOP.
No disunity from me. Speak for yourself.
“No disunity from me. Speak for yourself.”
There IS disunity in the context that some here are willing to chuck what is left of their principles under the BS Express and support that RINO bass turd* and others of us are conservatives first, Republicans 5th or 6th.....
* I vote for the ticket if he picks a conservative, well known, relatively young VP. However, my opinion of Juanito will never change.
Principle? Sorry I don’t see chucking America under the bus because you didn’t get your primary candidate as principle. McCain is a patriotic moderate conservative. He is not perfect on every issue, but no one is. I will proudly support McCain for President, especially given the alternative.
Oh, please you go right ahead and try to make everyone believe the MEDIA voted in the GOP primaries. BY THE PEOPLE meant that John McCain is the GOP nominee as THE PEOPLE voted, not the media.
I felt I knew what a Hillary administration would look like, bad as that might have been.
But Barry scares me. He has very little track record, other than running with a hard left crowd. What record there is also is hard left. I can't detect any bedrock convictions from which he might make decisions.
“America under the bus because you didnt get your primary candidate as principle. McCain is a patriotic moderate conservative.”
You say tomato, I say backstabbing POS.
Well, good, thanks for the compliment. Had he been elected in 2000 instead of Mr. "Mission Accomplished" you wouldn't even think about needing flame suits as:
1. Iraq would have been secured with a lasting peace.
2. Bin Laden would have been captured, tried and hung.
3. Iran and its odious leaders would have been cornered like rats.
4. The stock market would have been at 19,000 instead of 11,000.
5. The GOP would still be in control of both houses of Congress.
6. Whomever was the GOP nominee for president would be a virtual shoo-in against Hillary, as Obama would not have chosen to be beaten that badly.
7. The congressional seats of Jack Murtha, Harry Ried, John Kerry, Dick Durbin, Pat Leahy, Chuck Shumer, Chris Dodd and Ted Kennedy would all be threatened (despite the fact that not all are running this year).
8. Presidential historians would be writing about a legacy that compared favorably to Ronald Reagan's
9. The country would be optimistic about the economy, life in general.
10. AND little George W. Bush would be shrinking away in his Crawford ranch with NO CHANCE to screw up the greatest nation the world has ever seen.
You say POS, I say POA (president of America)...the real POS is currently running for POA and another real POS is currently the POA!
How about you post a list of predictions in the case that McCain wins? What will the House and Senate look like if McCain wins in November?
“the real POS is currently running for POA”
I see two POS’s....one is not less smelly than the other.
Those of us who voted for Dole and Bush carry some blame for us now having such bottom of the barrel candidates.
Is John McCain any relation to the McCain of McCain-Feingold or to that guy from Arizona that killed the GOP majority in Congress?
John McCain was selected with about 30% of the vote of Republicans (or people who pretended to be Republicans) in the primaries. The primaries were completely front-loaded, and the non-McCain candidates were played off against each other. It could have just as easily broken for either Huckabee or Romney, had they not had to face each other at the same time they were up against John.
What you are looking at is that the MAJORITY of Republican primary voters voted for somebody OTHER than John McCain.
Sometimes overwhelmingly.
OH PLEASE!!! We would have President Kerry right now had John "Liberal Coddler" McPainintheass ever become President. We never would have even invaded Iraq if the louse was ever POTUS!
I have never seen such a complete list of absolute B.S.!
A little refreshment on history here.
In 2000 the Democrat nominee for President was AL GORE. (Remember the Florida recount & recount & recount?) Just a few hundred votes, but the results all came out the same way.
With Al Gore as president on September 11, 2001, what would the probable outcome have been? There would have been no “Mission Accomplished”, because no mission would have been undertaken. Al-Qaeda, emboldened, would have taken out something like, Sears Tower in Chicago, and the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco, and it would STILL have been treated as a “law enforcement problem”, left to the state attorneys-general to prosecute under STATE law, not Federal.
Saddam would have had the nuclear weapons by then, and Israel would have been a smoking radioactive wasteland, unfit for even Palestinians to dwell. Crude oil would be at $150 a barrel, gasoline would be $4 a gallon, oh, wait, that happened anyway.
And “green” would have been the law of the land, with “carbon cap and trade” already in place.
It should Unappeasable Purist Conservatives vs. McCain.
The vast majority of conservatives support McCain because they are not that stupid to let Obama win the Presidency.
Unappeasable Purist Conservatives = Tiny, insignificant and delusional minority among conservatives.
Do not worry about the Purists. They are insignificant in numbers and totally impotent.

Seriously, what are you smoking? Could you share?
Sen. Graham is McCain's "political soulmate" and the same one who called us "bigots" for opposing amnesty. What do you suppose he has in mind for us within the first 100 days of a McAmnesty administration?
First we won the war in Iraq. We removed a terrorist regime called Saddam Hussein and we have crushed Al Qaeda terrorist there.
President Bush led the liberation of 50 million people in Iraq and Afghanistan and destroyed two terrorist regimes in Saddam and Taliban.
The economy did very well from 2003-2008 even now in the high oil prices and mortgage prices that the President has nothing to do with we have 1% increase in GDP in the first quarter of 2008.
President Bush gave us two superb Supreme Court Justices in Roberts and Alito and dozens of very good Federal judges.
The President kept us safe since 9/11/2001.
The President cut our taxes.
God Bless President Bush and our brave troops.
God Bless John McCain the man who will be the next President of the USA.
God Bless America.
