Conservatives to Fight McCain at Convention
newsmax.com ^ | July 7, 2008 | Phil Brennan

Posted on 07/07/2008 4:15:41 PM PDT by Free ThinkerNY

September's national convention for Republicans won't be a bed of roses for Sen. John McCain. There's at least one impediment to keep him from his party's nomination — a probable fight over the platform.

At issue are his stances on such explosive issues as global warming, immigration, stem-cell research and campaign finance. The Washington Post reports that, "Virtually the entire platform will have to be rewritten to lessen the imprint" of President Bush, whose name appears on nearly every page."

Although McCain has yet to reveal how he plans to alter the strongly conservative platform, the Post reports that many conservatives fear he'll want the platform to reflect his own views that in many instances diverge from those of most conservatives.

McCain is "really out of step with the strong majority of his party," Myron Ebell, director of energy and global warming policy at the Competitive Enterprise Institute told the Post. The Institute opposes McCain's positions on climate change.

GOP officials in the Republican National Committee, as well as those in McCain's campaign, told the Post they have much in common with conservatives. They say their conversations as they approach the convention suggest there will not be a nasty platform fight.

"We are confident that this process will produce a platform that all Republicans will enthusiastically support," said Joe Pounder, a spokesman for McCain. "Our party is united, and will continue to work together to elect John McCain in November."

Look for McCain to use the occasion to make himself look more ‘compassionate’ to the national audience at conservatives’ expense.

Look for McCain to use more and more sentences that begin with “My friends” or “My friend”. Irritating as hell.

In an ironic twist of fate, the man that derailed the GOP majority receives the GOP nomination for President then reaches across party lines to unify with his friends in the Democratic party.

Conservatives howl, then 4 years later beg for more punishment.

Every time he seeks to demonstrate his 'moderatism' by using conservatives as foils he moves another yard farther from the White House, and the liberals a yard closer.

That McCain is helping marginalize the conservative 30% of the voting population is icing on the cake for the left.

He's better off leaving the platform to the delegates, making his speech and directing the dog and pony show that the media shows.

Hopefully he won't get in the way of any rules changes to reform the Presidential Primary schedule like Bush's folks did.

They’ve got an in to the White House no matter who wins. How about that.

And one of them will actually silence conservatism while passing their pipe dreams.

I support McCain. He is the only reasonable choice for President right now — but ...

... I support this fight. McCain needs conservatives to continually push him to the right. I am convinced a McCain Presidency could be good for the country, but it will require constant pressure from us to make it so.

Obama isn’t a reasonable choice. Barr hasn’t a shot at victory. Nader and McKinney are worse than Obama. McCain has an 82% rating from the ACU — not great, but not a deal-breaker, and far better than Obama’s 8.

It can't be too "strongly conservative". The Bush campaign had such planks as the abolishment of the Department of Education removed in the 2000 Convention. Apparently, they did not do a sufficient job of watering down the platform.

Dream on!

McCain ruined the GOP majority.

McCain doesn't like Conservatives, doesn't think he needs them (cuz he panders to the lib and dems), and probably will do nothing at all for Conservatives. Nothing.

He's a maverick, remember?

If he kicked Conservatives in the shins as a senator, expect full body slams as President.

Technically the losers are those who challenged him in the primaries. He won, they lost. Period.

Quite a few FReepers have some growing up to do before November. Listen up children, it’s Obama vs McCain. There is no other match. Voting 3rd party or writing in the name of an also ran from the primaries isn’t making a statement. It’s just going to be a minor inconvenience for the poor soul who volunteered to verify the vote count.

Face facts, if you’re rightfully threatened by the prospect of an Obama presidency only one vote is really going to count against him, and that’s a vote for McCain. Votes for Keyes, Baldwin, Hunter, et al just go straight to the —— pile where they belong.

It’s time to quite pretending you’re above it all and realize there are only two political choices at this juncture and pick one. Any other choice is the same as not voting, only in true adolescent fashion, you’re being petulantly noisy about it.

Besides John McCain’s problems of granting amnesty to illegal aliens and restricting freedom of speech, he is severely deficient in the areas of national security and integrity.

Politics is the art of compromise and leadership is the art of principle. Lincoln used superb political skills to implement some of the most cogent and insightful principles to guide this nation. McCain has used political skills to implement compromises consistent with increasing personal acclaim among liberal media and politicians.

The former is dead and the latter is alive, but dead to principles unrelated to his immediate personal advancement. Since leadership is absent from the Democrat and Republican Parties, each individual must make a way to manage commitment to principle and political party affiliation. Each individual must answer questions as to what extent, under what circumstances and when, if ever, do you forsake conservative principles to align with an enemy of your beliefs against a greater enemy of your beliefs?

John McCain lacks leadership for the War on Terror. His leadership codified the Army interrogation manual making terrorists legal combatants. His leadership granted terrorists American citizenship rights under Fifth, Eighth and Fourteenth Amendments. He thereby ensures information vital to defeat terrorists remains sacred and unobtainable. Terrorists are unresponsive to direct questioning and psychological gambits. Therefore, interrogators need all stress and coercion techniques our military encounters in survival schools. McCain embraces liberal orthodoxy considering those methods torture, but his searing experiences call forth contrary insights he must suppress.

McCain especially understands from the Geneva Conventions terrorists are not insurgents or freedom fighters; when captured, certainly not prisoners of war. They are not armed forces, militias, or volunteer corps of any country or authority. These killers are not members of organized resistance movements carrying arms openly. They have no distinctive identifier. Terrorists cannot even qualify as spies or saboteurs destroying infrastructure required to support military operations. McCain understands Geneva Conventions intended to isolate such forces, provide them no protections, and allow destruction with any overwhelming furies needed to crush their abominations. Knowing these factors he has promised to close Guantanamo Bay, inviting terrorists into our legal system. He has decided to accommodate extraordinarily savage behavior, which checkmates national laws intended to manage simple murder and kidnapping, and renders Posse Comitatus a crumbling deception.

McCain especially appreciates from our Constitution that laws guaranteeing civil liberties presuppose operation within an invincible society. He more than most understands Alexander Hamilton’s words that devastating, unforeseeable perils must lead deliberations. The Federal government’s three branches primary responsibility is to pursue Hamilton’s admonition that powers exist without limitation; providing capabilities thwarting dangers as well as repelling attacks. McCain understands powerful warfare capabilities require potent intelligence acquisition and exploitation before and throughout campaigns.

The framers of our Constitution and the Geneva Conventions held powerful positions throughout the darkest times of our country and the world. They were our Founding Fathers, and parents and grandparents of the Greatest Generation. Their words expressed durable morality earned in our fight for freedom, and against the ultimate bloody deluge of the 20th century. These first generations expressed principles derived from confronting shattering tragedies, and earning peace through victory. John McCain’s actions are particularly reprehensible because he turns a blind eye to the council of these people.

McCain continually seeks popular advancement by placating those coveting luxurious morality requiring shelter from hard choices and danger awareness. His crime is repudiating military and intelligence professionals facing hard choices when confronting shrewd, ruthless enemies obscured behind frightening uncertainties.

John McCain succumbed to the terrible addiction of political power. The same addiction expressed itself differently in fellow Navy officer Randy Cunningham, who was the Navy’s first Vietnam ace. Over the decades the honor and moral authority of both were gradually traded away for influence in the political arena. To me McCain is like a cadaver prepared for viewing. The removal of blood and organs equates to the trading away of honor and moral authority. The reputation that remains is like the cosmetics applied for viewing the corpse at the funeral. It is easy for anyone to get onto the same sort of gently downward sloping path. The final result is tragic, but we do not need such a pathetic and contemptible modern day Macbeth or Hamlet as President.
