Obama shifts speech to stadium (shortened title)
International Herald Tribune ^ | July 7, 2008 | Jim Rutenberg

WASHINGTON: Senator Barack Obama will accept his party's nomination in a Denver football stadium that seats more than 75,000 people, campaign officials said Monday, a late change in plans intended to take advantage of the candidate's ability to draw huge crowds.

The Obama campaign's decision to hold the convention's headliner event at Invesco stadium, nearly two miles, or about three kilometers, away from the main convention hall at the Pepsi Center, harked back to the decision by John F. Kennedy to accept the Democratic Party nomination at the Memorial Coliseum in Los Angeles in 1960.

But the announcement came after the news media had spent months planning coverage under the seemingly safe assumption that all four nights of the convention would take place at the Pepsi Center, which seats 19,000 people.

The challenge was especially high for the major television networks, which pour millions of dollars into elaborate sky box and floor sets devised to showcase their own stars along with the candidates themselves.

You know, to the degree this makes it harder for the news media talking heads to make themselves the center of attention, that won’t be a bad thing.

To the degree this makes the media stars angry, and gives them reason to make snide comments, that’s a good thing.

To the degree this makes it more likely there will be snafus, and that something will overtake his convention speech message, that’s a good thing.

People were going to watch his speech. Now some of them will watch in person instead of on TV. Of course, the delegates should all be pretty upset, they paid good money and went through some trouble to be invited to the party, and now just anybody can get in.

BTW, it’s open to the public. So I see no reason why the Republicans can’t get on the ball here and put 10,000 people into that stadium, maybe with some really good t-shirts (I’m thinking solid colors, non-descript, such that when they all sit down in some corner, it spells out “NOBAMA”. or “COMMUNIST”).

Reminds me too much of past and present dictators speaking in open air venues.

I think he’s doing this for two reasons- one, to limit press coverage, and two, to avoid a floor vote.

Maybe a third, is the Inveso center union and Pepsi center not?

He’ll no doubt have a big concert just before, like he did before.

Hey, didn’t Kennedy do this in the 60s, hire a separate venue for his acceptance speech? And Obama’s going all the way to Germany to deliver a speech at Brandenburg gate like Kennedy, when he wouldn’t even go to Alaska!

“What a pompous a$$!! I hope this falls flat on it’s head!”

Guess the Obama campaign is holding a raffel so folks can have a chance to “win” a seat at the stadium!
From:
his.https://donate.barackobama.com/DNCconvention

On Thursday, August 28th, he’s scheduled to formally accept the Democratic nomination in a speech at the convention hall in front of the assembled delegates.

Instead, the convention will move to an outdoor stadium where Barack will join more than 75,000 people for a huge, free, open-air event and deliver his acceptance speech to the American people.

It’s going to be an amazing event, and Barack would like you to join him. Free tickets will become available as the date approaches, but we’ve reserved a special place for a few of the people who brought us this far and who continue to drive this campaign.

If you make a donation of $5 or more between now and midnight on July 31st, you could be one of 10 supporters chosen to fly to Denver and spend two days and nights at the convention, meet Barack backstage, and watch his acceptance speech in person. Each of the ten supporters who are selected will be able to bring one guest to join them.

Make a donation now and you could have a front row seat to history:

We’ll follow up with more details on this and other convention activities as we get closer, but please take a moment and pass this note to someone you know who might like to be there.

It will be an event you’ll never forget.

Thank you,

David

He gets several weeks to rehearse his speech. Imagine him, in his hotel room, with all the coaches telling him to do this, not that, to look this way, to hold his head high, to then look benevolent.....

This guy is the product of some group that will run things around him. He will be a figurehead for all sorts of political critters who will call the shots for him.

I will not compare this guy to any leader; because he’s not a leader. He’s a figurehead for some political power and the public doesn’t realize it.

“There is something sick about this whole thing.”

Right you are. We are witnessing mass hysteria for an empty suit that happens to be a great orator. If anybody thought that we (the American voter) are too sophisticated not to fall for something like this, here’s the proof that we will.

Today we will willingly elect a dictator if he or she is packaged and marketed right.

I think this guy is so wrapped up in himself that he really does not know what he’s getting into. Dear Lord, I hope his veep is stronger than him, I hate to think of Pelosi running the country.

This could be the setting for a new revolution. I believe that an Obama presidency can bottom the country out with all its giveaways, regulations, litigation and high taxes. Our government can’t take much more.

Agreed.

We all need to start referring to this upcoming speech as the “Nuremburg Speech”.

When people ask us what that means we can say, “ You know, like Adolph Hitler used to give at the Nuremburg stadiums in the 1930s—and you know how that turned out. NObama!”

It is not his acceptance speech—it is his Nuremburg Speech.

Pass it on.

Or he may want a large space with lots of witnesses to forestall a last-minute putsch by rival fascist Hitlery.
