A number of friends of mine have commented on an odd phenomenon that they have observed conservative Republicans they know who are saying that they are going to vote for Barack Obama. It seemed at first to be an isolated fluke, perhaps signifying only that my friends know some strange conservatives. But apparently columnist Robert Novak has encountered the same phenomenon and has coined the term "Obamacons" to describe the conservatives for Senator Obama.
Now the San Francisco Chronicle has run a feature article, titled "Some Influential Conservatives Spurn GOP and Endorse Obama." In it they quote various conservatives on why they are ready to take a chance on Barack Obama, rather than on John McCain.
What is going on?
Partly what is going on is that, in recent years, the Congressional Republicans in general and Senator John McCain in particular have so alienated so many conservatives that some of these conservatives are like a drowning man grasping at a straw.

Very well said, Dr. Sowell.

No conservatives are voting for Obama. Quislings, poseurs, and wanna-bes are voting for Obama.
Fools. They’ll feel even more foolish come September and October when Obama starts to really take the heat on his numerous uber-liberal past votes.
I keep hearing about these “well known” conservatives going for Obama, but I still haven’t seen their names.
Any conservative who votes for Obama is in desperate need of psychological help, probably suffering from severe depression.
Nor have I and I believe few have.
Remember the exit polls in the Dem primary. There are lots and lots of people that will claim loudly that they will/have voted for Obama but when the numbers actually get added up...not so much. Many, many people are afraid of letting anyone know that they would vote against him because they fear the “racist” label. Polls are more meaningless than usual this time around.
Now here is a man I could vote for if he were to run for President. I don’t care if what color he is, green, blue, red, black, brown or white. This is a man that needs to be in our government. Any thing less than President would be to low for a man of this caliber.
Thomas Sowell!!
Now there’s not just a black man that I could vote for, but a MAN that I would vote for.
Thomas Sowell for president!!
Not a very effective mask at all, much like this disguise:
What a brilliant observation! Because people are shy of being thought ‘racist’ they are going to lie like rugs to polsters if race is even a ‘hint scent’. If conservatives will pause for only a moment, they will realize that the DNC wants Obama to use him as a foil to wash away the stench and rot of clintonism. But they don’t expect Barry O to do any actual leading and they certainly will not allow that to happen. Come to think of it, perhaps black people ought to figure that out, and quickly!
Hear Hear!
Thomas Sowell for President, and how about Walter Williams for VP?
Bump!
I am not letting the fact that B. Hussein Obama is half white persuade me to vote for a Marxist.
This is a brilliant essay from a man who always writes outstanding editorials. Read slowly, this one really skewers Obama.
Now that’s just sexist ... you know Missus Williams would never let Walter take that job! Besides, we need Thomas Sowell’s wisdom on the SCOTUS, a.s.a.p.
Real conservative Republicans who believe in hope and change ?
No.
Conservatives for Obama: Proof that the Left doesn’t have a monopoly on stupid.
If he is still alive, I would love Don Cornelius as press secretary.
...gee, I have no idea why...
So its not a conservative thing, its a black thing. Especially since Powell isn’t a conservative.
No conservative is voting for McCain, either.
Why would people be afraid of the opinions of complete strangers (telephone pollsters, exit pollsters)? ....strangers with whom they speak for a second or two, and then will likely never see or hear from again?
As usual, Sowell nails it.
This one is ... and I think he is more likely to listen to reason than the marxist DNC lapdog. Getting through the thick McCain ego veneer is the problem.
If you actually think pollsters don’t collect demographic data on the numbers called and keep it in deep files, well, seen the Quakers on the Moon lately?
Even so, who really would give a rip that “McCain” is next to one’s name in some “deep file” somewhere? Only nutballs and the ultra-guilt ridden.
Fine by me. Or Clarence Thomas for either, except we can't spare him just now.
I could name a dozen blacks, at least, that I would consider voting for. Not one of them has the middle name of Hussein, however.
I have no idea as to the why but I really can’t find a better explanation for the discrepancy. All surveys have an inherent “lie” factor and those conducted face to face tend to be more exagerated. Some people just like to throw a monkey wrench into the system too.
Either you haven’t a clue what goes into pollster’s ‘for future reference’ files or you’re being purposely obtuse.
“No conservative is voting for McCain, either. “
oh, but they are, if they want to keep Obama from the White House, OUR White House
mrs
I’m not a pollster, so I admittedly have no idea what they put into their “for future reference” files. But I do know I don’t give a rat’s ass about telling any pollster, either on the telephone or at the exit polls, that I will vote or have voted against B-HO. ...and anyone who does is a paranoid lunatic.
A message from the past that needs to be repeated over and over again. I'm gonna quote it on some bumper stickers.
Mrs. Williams has nothing to say in the matter, WW bought Mrs. Williams a new vacuum cleaner for their anniversary...she is going to be to busy to notice WW is not around for long stretches of time....
That is only partial sarcasm, his shovel story is sooooo funny...LOL!
I want to believe you are correct but I keep talking to people who have voted Republican their entire life and behave in a conservative manner who are voting for Obama.
They hate McCain and think it is time for a "change" after all the GOP BS and excessive spending and scandals.
My very favorite!
Right on! My Dream Ticket

Blacks To The Future
I love listening to Walter. Wonder what his Economics classes are like at George Mason? Only Economics professor I ever had would occasionally get up and forget his wife at the College Cafeteria on Sundays when he returned his tray.
The only thing more unlikely than that is "Conservatives for McCain".
Here’s the complete quote - it wouldn’t all fit on my tag line. :)
“Socialism is a philosophy of failure, the creed of ignorance, and the gospel of envy; its inherent virtue is the equal sharing of misery”. —Winston Churchill
I found it on this blog:
You Shall Have No Gods Before Envy

bump!
Anyone who is voting for Obama does not understand the first thing about conservative ideals. They are not a real conservative.
Similarly, anyone who is a conservative IS voting for McCain. Yes, I’ve heard the litany of McCain’s sins against conservatism. I supported Thompson in the primaries.
The primaries are over. We are faced with a choice. We can choose someone who has been a fiscal conservative his entire career, who has been pro-life his entire career, who has consistently supported the military and the war on terror, and who will appoint justices who are far more likely to be acceptable than his opponent.
The other option is to vote for someone who has been a liberal extremist for all of his short career, who has promised to cripple our military and end the war on terror, raise taxes, recognize gay marriage, and appoint extremist judges.
There are no other choices. You cannot stay home. You cannot vote for a third party candidate and hope for eventual redemption. Once the toothpaste of socialized medicine, leftist extremist justices, crippling taxes, and an eviscerated military is out of the tube, there will be no putting it back in.
This is an election for our survival. McCain is not perfect, but the perfect is the enemy of the good, or in this case, maybe the just good enough.
