CA: Former South Bay lawmaker considers run at governorship (RINO Tom Campbell alert)

Former South Bay lawmaker considers run at governorship

SACRAMENTO - Former South Bay Republican congressman Tom Campbell - a fiscal conservative, social moderate and respected academic who twice before unsuccessfully sought statewide office, is eyeing a possible run in 2010 to replace Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger.

Campbell, 55, filed papers last week to form an "exploratory committee" for governor, which allows him to begin raising money for a potential bid. He joins two other GOP moderates from Silicon Valley - state Insurance Commissioner Steve Poizner and former eBay chief Meg Whitman - among Republicans who have expressed interest in running.

On the Democratic side, San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom, Attorney General and former Gov. Jerry Brown, Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa and Lt. Gov. John Garamendi are likely or possible contenders to succeed Schwarzenegger, who is termed out of office in 2011.

Campbell boasts a sterling academic résumé - he earned a doctorate in economics and a law degree from Harvard - and during five terms in Congress gained a reputation as an independent thinker willing to challenge party orthodoxy. He served briefly as Schwarzenegger's finance chief.

But!... But!... Only limp-wristed pro-abort "moderates" (read: RINOs) can win in California < /sarcasm >

On the positive side, maybe we can get enough RINOs running to split the RINO vote and have a conservative get the nomination. Question is, will any conservatives dare run?

Meg Whitman??? eBay's business practices aren't exactly a shining beacon of Meg's integrity.

“Schwarzenegger, who is termed out of office in 2011.”

2011. So the embarrassment will finally come to an end.

Oh, yeah, considering how well Arnold has done with CA's finances this statement really makes me want to vote for this guy./SAR

Although I have a soft spot for Campbell (was his early runs for Congress that got me to switch forever from Dem to GOP) and would vote for him IF he got the nomination,

after the last 20 years of life’s experiences, I’d be hard-pressed to vote-in-the-primary for anyone other than a McClintock type, someone who I KNOW is not going to “grow in office.” Schwarzenegger SAID all the right things (remember the radio ad decrying being “tax, tax, tax”ed?), but how many has he DONE?

It’s difficult for ANY Republican to win statewide office nowadays in liberal California, be he “RINO” (Fong, Wilson) or conservative (McClintock, Simon, Lungren).

That may be true (as long as Pete Wilson and his gang work against solid Republicans.)

Isn't Campbell too busy promoting the National Popular Vote movement, trying to destroy the electoral college?

McClintock ran a good Lt. Gov. campaign, and is a great guy with all the right qualifications. My PAC gave to him. However, having an R by your name anywhere is a problem these days, esp. in CA. Not sure that moderates could do any better, but maybe that’s the most we can hope for.

CA does not have representative government, for the most part.

Well, we've got Tom running for our District 4 Congressional seat now and he's gonna pound the Democrat nut Charlie Brown into the silt left by the gold rush!!!

CA was too stupid to put Tom in charge, so we're sending him to Washington from a district that is now more conservative than Orange County because half of Orange County has moved up here to Placer and El Dorado counties that constitute the vast majority of the District 4 population.

“And I’m not so sure of Simon’s and certainly not Lungren’s conservatism anymore...”

As anti-gun as Lungren was, I’d be extremely hesitant to put “conservative” among his credentials. NRA F grade is not exactly conservative creds.

“Meg Whitman??? eBay’s business practices aren’t exactly a shining beacon of Meg’s integrity.”

So please be specific about just which business practice(s) you object to, and why that reflects upon her integrity.

(As near as I can tell, buyers and sellers use ebay on a voluntary basis.)

I see no conservative in the CAGOP is running for Governor in 2010. In a state as lopsidedly left as California, it may be a fruitless endeavor.

now more conservative than Orange County because half of Orange County has moved up here to Placer and El Dorado counties

And they came for the weather?

More accurately: Half of Mexico moved into Orange County setting off white collar flight to anywhere where there isn't a plurality of Mexican nationals. It's ok if they mow the lawns, but when they move in next door, it's off to the hills.

And so can you be specific about the practices of PayPal, which trouble you. The services which buyers and sellers voluntarily use?

If you are going to malign the integrity of somebody, give specifics!!

He'd be better than Ted Bundy, Charles Manson and Jeffrey Dahmer too. So what's your point? (or are you the ghost of FairOpinion?)

And I’m not so sure of Simon’s and certainly not Lungren’s conservatism anymore...

Please don't put those two int eh same sentence. Bill Simon is one of the most decent men to ever run for public office in California, and I will personally vouch for his conservative credentials...anyone who says otherwise has me to deal with.

Lungren is an idiot.

Campbell’s Ph.D. in economics is from the University of Chicago; he earned his B.A. degree from there as well.

CA was too stupid to put Tom in charge,

No, CA is too liberal to put someone like Tom McClintock in charge.

CCPOA- liberal or conservative (biggest contributors to any campaign/ initiative)?
CA Teacher's Assoc.- liberal or conservative?
Hell, for that matter, every California State Employee- liberal or conservative?
Trial Lawyers- liberal or conservative?
University professors- liberal or conservative?
MediCal recipients- liberal or conservative?
Every sucker who's getting a free-ride on a government teat- liberal or conservative?

See a pattern here? What you may notice (in addition to the liberal slant) among those mentioned is that each represents a significant portion of any budget. A 'drain', if you will.

And, as 'social overhead' costs to society- they allow little or no wiggle-room for investments in infrustructure like dams, nuke plants, even glorified wind and solar (if your butt is green) sans a major tax hike.

As to having Tom represent us, it is a great thing. Perhaps we can show the rest of the state how to get things accomplished, things like energy, water projects, flood control, etc.

My biggest disappointment with Arnold is that he's been unable to use the 'bully pulpit' effectively at all, what with all his muscles and hollywood celebrity. [Has Maria been 'cutting his hair'? (see: Sampson)]

As the seventh or eigth largest economy in the World, it is still quite a luxury to fund (to the extent we do) these budget termites.

This $15 billion budget deficit may be a blessing in disguise. Collapsing under the weight of it's own malfeasence, whatever hardships may ensue could bring about a new era of "what can my country do for me", reality. Then again, maybe not.

Me, I'm looking forward to secession from the coastal cities and electing an East California governor instead. We could sell them our excess water, and, we'd have access to the gold in the Mother Lode. Win, win baby!

It does say BRIEFLY. The true problem, which Arnold attempted to address in the 2005 special election, is the stranglehold Rats have on the Legislature (nearly a supermajority) and Big Labor.

We could nominate my cat. He'd be just as likely to lose, but we'd spend a whole lot less money on him that the likes of Campbell.

I give Campbell credit for one thing... he had the balls to vote for impeachment. In a Clintonista district like his, that was pretty impressive for a RINO.
