Waxman threatens Mukasey with subpoena

House Oversight and Government Reform Committee Chairman Henry Waxman warned Attorney General Michael Mukasey on Tuesday to turn over a copy of a FBI interview with Vice President Dick Cheney or face contempt charges.

The document in question is an interview Cheney gave to the FBI in the investigation of the leak of the identity of Valerie Plame Wilson, a covert CIA agent.

“The arguments you have raised for withholding the interview report are not tenable,” Waxman wrote in a letter to Mukasey.

“When the FBI interview with the Vice President was conducted, the Vice President knew that the information in the interview could be made public in a criminal trial and that there were no restrictions on Special Counsel Fitzgerald's use of the interview.”

The committee subpoenaed the interview on June 16. However, the Justice Department has yet to turn over the document.

“In light of your actions, I am writing to inform you that the Committee will meet on July 16, 2008, to consider a resolution citing you for contempt of Congress,” Waxman wrote.

“I strongly urge you to comply with the duly issued subpoena before then.”

President Bush exonerated of “misleading statements” leading to Iraq war

Excerpt:

"The amazing thing about this incident, in addition to the obvious miscarriage of justice, is that at the root of the controversy was an erroneous report by Valerie Plame’s husband. Joseph Plame, who parlayed his report into a public scandal with the help Democrats, the ever-investigative Fitzgerald and the Democrat Party house organs, has been proven to be totally wrong.

Those who harped on the Bush administration and its members for both the “leak” and for going to war in Iraq despite a supposed lack of evidence of a nuclear program by Iraq’s monstrous dictator and his sons should by all rights be made to suffer the same indignities visited upon President Bush, Vice President Cheney, their aides and especially, Lewis Libby.

Today we know that Iraq did possess 550 metric tons of “yellowcake” – the seed material for higher-grade nuclear enrichment.

The effort to topple Hussein and cause regime change was indeed necessary to prevent the development of nuclear weapons. We know this because it has been revealed, albeit without the fanfare of the earlier “scandal”, that this huge stockpile of concentrated uranium, a remnant of Hussein’ nuclear program, was removed from Iraq and shipped to a buyer in Canada.

It should be a great relief to the world to know that Hussein was not given enough time to further develop his nuclear program because President Bush defied his critics and took action to abort this threat."

We are still harping on about Plame? I thought that that issue was done, even Chris Matthews is more focused on Obama making him “happy” than about The Great Fitzmas Carol. In fact it died down after it was revealed that the source was Richard Armitage.

Waxman is ridiculous. I might not agree with many issues in the book, but State of Emergency gets it very much right. We care a lot more about “Going Green” or “Who Outted Valerie Plame” than about Illegal Immigration, Terrorism, Why Iraq was a threat with Saddam in charge(through documentation) or Gas Prices. If our nation is committing suicide, people like Waxman are helping it out. C’mon Waxman, we want to hear about “REEL IMPORTENT ISSUES” like the Firing of 9 US Attorneys. C’mon, for the good of the country you can SAVE the constitution. (sarc.)

I am truly sick of these people. If I didn’t have to hear at least one Liberal talking point in our popular culture for a minute I would be happy. It is just so funny, maybe they should subpoena OBL or some other Terrorist. But than Subpoenas to this Congress are like UN resolutions to Iraq.

“But hey instead of tacking the real issues let’s harp on this some more.”

This is all most of the Dems in these committee chair positions are capable of doing. The masses can be divided into two...players and scorekeepers. The Dems are scorekeepers, armed with an acute case of paranoia.

Speaking of the former covert agent, her cover was blown by the KGB back in the 1990’s, and there was also the incident down in Cuba involving secret documents being routed through the Swiss embassy to which the Cubans were able to see what was contained in those documents.

And if she ever was covert at the time of Novak’s article, then why was she assigned to a job where she was walking in and out the front door of CIA headquarters every day? Why did they do the Vanity Fair cover shoot if her life was in danger? If the enemy didn’t know what she looked like then, they sure as hell know what she looks like now. Then there is Wilson’s own New York Slimes op-ed piece that detailed his “secret” mission to Niger.

All in all, waxman is a disgrace to this country and should be kicked out of congress for wasting our time and money.

Waxman schedules contempt vote against Mukasey for ignoring Plamegate subpoena
Submitted by AmyW on Tue, 07/08/2008 - 11:45am. Alerts

A BUZZFLASH NEWS ALERT
by Amy Weiss

Attorney General Michael Mukasey has ignored a subpoena issued June 16 by the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform asking for documents relevant to its Valerie Plame leak investigation, including FBI interviews with President Bush and Vice President Cheney.

Committee Chair Rep. Henry Waxman (D-CA) sent Mukasey a letter July 8 informing him that the Committee would vote July 16 on whether or not Mukasey will be found in contempt of Congress.

Waxman said, in order to accommodate Mukasey’s assertion of “core Executive Branch confidentiality interests and fundamental separation of powers principles,” the Committee would no longer seek President Bush’s interview.

However, Vice President Cheney’s must be produced.

Libby had told the FBI it was “possible” Cheney instructed him to inform members of the press about Plame’s identity.

Special Counsel Patrick Fitzgerald, the prosecutor in the Scooter Libby trial, responded to the Committee’s requests for documents and told Waxman he knew of no agreement that would prevent the interviews from being shared with the Committee:

I can advise you that as to any interviews of either the President or Vice President not protected by the rules of grand jury secrecy, there were no “agreements, conditions and understandings between the Office of Special Counselor the Federal Bureau of Investigation” and either the President or Vice President “regarding the conduct and use of the interview or interviews.”

The Committee’s renewed investigation comes after Libby’s FBI interview and Scott McClellan’s tell-all book.

As Waxman wrote to Mukasey on June 3, the leak allegations “cannot be responsibly investigated without access to the Vice President’s FBI interview.”
