Aggressive bear shot in Denali National Park and Preserve
Fairbanks Daily News-Miner ^ | July 6, 2008

Posted on 07/08/2008 12:55:40 PM PDT by george76

An aggressive black bear was shot and killed in a remote section of Denali National Park by park staffers on July 4...

The black bear had threatened the life and safety of three park employees ...

Three seasonal National Park Service technicians were conducting a botany field study along the remote river when a sub-adult black bear approached their camp ...

The three tried to scare it away by yelling, waving their arms and throwing objects at the bear. After being chased off into dense brush, the bear circled back to the camp three or four times. At one point, the animal destroyed a tent. On its final approach to the camp, the bear charged the three researchers, hissing and pouncing at the ground.

An attempt to divert the bear with pepper spray was ineffective.

One of the researchers, who was authorized to carry and use firearms in the park, shot the bear when it charged within 20 feet of the team. The bear was hit in its mid-section with a 12-gauge shotgun slug. Despite considerable blood loss, the wounded bear moved into dense vegetation and out of view.

Shouldn’t they have waited until the bear ate one or two of them to make sure the bear really wanted to hurt them.

We had to deal with a passive-aggressive bear once.

What a pain in the rear that was.

The bear probably tried to make off with their supply of beer.

nope, but after enough people find out the hard way that it doesn’t, the bear is preseasoned for those of us smart enough to just shoot the thing.

you may not carry a firearm within the boundaries of Denali National Park . If you possess a firearm it cannot be carried on your person or in a backpack, etc. All firearms must be stored unloaded, broken down and placed out of sight, such as in the trunk of your vehicle.

Firearms are NOT needed for protection from bears!

Very bad behavior on the part of the park employees.

1. Undergunned. 12 gauge is a great tool for aggressive humans. It ain't enough for aggressive black bears. This guy needed one of the heavy rifles, loaded alternately with partition bullets and solids. I'm partial to the Old Reliable, .375 Holland and Holland Magnum -- but most professional hunters are now carrying one of the big Winchester or Weatherby magnums.

2. When you wound game, you always follow it up. . . . unless you're a park ranger. If the bear had lost that much blood, it wouldn't have been difficult to track. I suspect that these sometime hunters were reluctant to head into heavy cover after a wounded bear. To avoid this situation, see item No. 1.

This is not the first time this has occurred, btw. Back when my dad was in his 30s, he was hunting with a Game Warden who gut shot a deer. They tracked the blood trail for awhile, but the warden got tired and left my dad to track on alone. He followed that deer for FOUR HOURS, found it dead, and packed it out.

With the right ammo, a 12 gauge is plenty gun for a bear. A 12 gauge shotgun loaded with slugs is standard issue “bear medicine” on the arctic ice cap.

No, they should have had a well thought-out discussion with the bear and convinced the bear that they meant it no harm. To further prove their point they should have concluded their discussion with a group hug. That clearly would have changed the bear’s mind.

The poor bear was living in a remote part of the National Park and “Preserve” and is gunned down because it had not seen humans before. So much for natural preservation.

The three idiots should lose their jobs.

It says, “authorized to carry and use firearms in the park,” You can’t shoot animals in a National Park. He was authorized to be able to do so.

A slug from a 12 gauge should be plenty enough power to stop a black bear at close range. Of course, some slugs are much better than others. The shooter should have aimed at the neck, however.

That info-page is a bunch of typical hug-a-bear (pun intended) BS, as I’m sure you know. Notice how they down play the agressive behavior of bears, slanting it towards humans causing the problem.

Pepper spray is really not much of a deterrent with people either. Those of us who have gone through hands-on training which required being sprayed and then continuing the “attack” (on the instuctors padded up). It was amazing, we all (our class of 33) averaged a good 20 seconds of effective force including the ability to think tactically and act on it.

We had to run, fend off or attack the instuctor (the scenario varied with the instructor so you couldn’t plan a defence), find a weapon (plastic pistol) on the ground “lost” in the struggle, aim it at our assailant, pretend to shoot several rounds, then run back to the starting point. You had to actually, physically fend off the instructor, no “pretending” allowed. 20 seconds is a very long time when the chips are down. I was amazed—and heartened by the ability to just keep going.

A lesson for those who depend on pepper spray for bear or humans.

Thanks, that's exactly what I was thinking, too.

I do have a question about shot placement though... Would you take a "midsection" shot? I've never hunted bear and so I don't know myself, but I think I would've taken a head shot if he was that close to me.

2. Bears hiss? Why does nobody tell me these things?

I once got accidentally sprayed with capsicum. Long story -- partly my fault.

If it doesn't incapacitate a plump 40ish (at that time) matron with a desk job, it is definitely NOT going to incapacitate a thug OR a bear. All it did was make my eyes burn and make me VERY embarassed.

Center of mass for the first shot - I would go high chest, I think, but not neck. Too easy to miss when the panic's on.

Followup shots to the neck and head, however, would be a really good idea.

I have to disagree about 12 ga. when the chips are down. I want a nice big Nosler with serious muzzle energy behind it, and I want a bunch of them in that bear in quick succession.

I thought the proverbial "Bear Medicine" was a .348 Winchester Model 71 lever action with the big 250 gr Silvertips.

At least that was what my mom had. My dad was going to buy the .375 H&H, but mom turned up pregnant with me instead.

Dunno.
I got this from my Father-in-law, Dr. Garret Brass - he was a technocrat for the Federales and had his own little fleet in of icebreakers... Been to the North Pole 5 times.

What I have READ (if I have any choice, you won't catch me close enough to bear, esp. a polar bear, to actually shoot it...) is that you aim for the shoulders. The object is to shatter the shoulder blade and stop its charge. Apparently a bear will keep coming on a bit before he figures out he's dead.
The guy who wrote this shot 3 Grizzlies in AK, one right after another, when they attacked him. Seems it was the end of the hibernation period and they though he and his wife looked like a easy meal...
He used a big game rifle, though.

“1. Undergunned. 12 gauge is a great tool for aggressive humans. It ain’t enough for aggressive black bears. “

By all accounts a 12 G w slugs is plenty for a black bear, and is even acceptable for Griz at close range. The failure in this case was due to poor marksmanship. A hit in the same spot from a 375 H&H would likely have the same result. Not following up on the wounded bear was unforgivable.

Yes, and a bear in my back yard took a 12 gage slug in the shoulder that broke its shoulder bone, made mincemeat of its heart and lungs; and it still ran about a hundred yards crashing through thick brush before it fell.

Because spraying the bear is just going to cause it to lose whatever it had left of its gruntle.

A partially disgruntled bear is bad enough, but a totally disgruntled one is worse.

Very scary. But I wasn't there, it was my step dad and my brother and THEY were up a tree stand they built for that purpose. Smart move. That bear was over 6 feet tall sitting on its ass. It was Halloween night and I was down in Chico CA for some cold beer and hot women.

Also the angle of the shot was towards the heart from the shoulder. Hard to get that angle on a 7 foot tall bear when you are on the ground! Tree stand highly recommended for shooting large bears!!!!

A 375 H&H has ~4660 ft #s of energy with a 300 gr bullet. A 12 g magnum slug at 75 caliber, 437 gr bullet with <3500 ft #s. That’s pretty serious and most people have a 12 G in their closets rather than having to buy a $3000 rifle.

The bear would be moving and the closer it is the faster the angle changes. Aim for the center of mass, don’t even try to place shots. You’ll be lucky to track the center of mass. Be ready to shoot from the hip because that might be the only shot you have.

It`s a game preserve. They could have gotten the hell out of there instead of gut shooting it. Now the bear will probably die a slow, agonizing death.

A polar bear was killed in Fort Yukon a few months ago. The one who finally got it had an AR-15 and the bear came on so fast that there was not time to bring the firearm to the shoulder and aim. 10 rounds were fired from the hip as fast as possible, which is prety fast. Wouldn’t hurt to try this technique some day when nobody else is at the firing range.

They kick people out of the firing range I used to go to (down by Half Moon Bay) if they catch you practicing your rapid fire techniques. Ticks me off because when I was growing up in the midwest I could go out on the back porch and do all the rapid firing I wanted to without asking anyone's permission. Now they act like you're some kind of insane maniac if you do try it. God, for the good old days!

Must admit, bears scare the crap out of me, especially the big'uns, grizz, the big browns, and polar bears. Don't even want to mess with them! Heck, I won't even mess with the so-called "tame" ones!
