Obama contest rules changed to avoid lottery issues ( Change )
Rocky Mountain News ^ | July 8, 2008 | Sara Burnett

Barack Obama's campaign changed the rules of a highly publicized fundraiser Tuesday, after gambling regulators said the contest — a chance at one of 10 trips to the Democratic National Convention — was an illegal lottery.

"We are happy to have resolved this issue working closely with state officials," said Nick Kimball, spokesman for the Obama campaign ...

A spokesman for the Colorado Secretary of State said Democrats would have to get a license if they were conducting "a standard raffle where they're buying tickets" in order to win.

But under the new rules, supporters don't have to donate money to win one of the trips...

The campaign announced the contest Monday, minutes after officials confirmed Obama would give his speech at Invesco rather than the Pepsi Center, a switch that sources said could add $3 million to the cost of staging the Democratic National Convention.

Somehow, Obama and The Lottery do seem made for one another.

I detest Obama too, but this is silliness. It’s a raffle, for goodness sake! What if it was bingo? This is too much incursion by government. In a way, it’s good that it’s biting the Dems, since they’re always the ones to come up with such nonsense.

Anyone want to enter? Could be a hoot to show up with a t-shirt or sign of your choice.

As long as no money is involved, I’ll enter. And if I win, my guest ticket will go to Ann Coulter.

Guess he has no lawyers on the payroll to have thought that this might be an illegal lottery. Bet his AG will be really smart.

I got the email solicitation (I have a drop email account that I use solely for the purpose of messing with dhimmis):

Dear XXXXXX --

Join Barack at the Open ConventionI wanted you to be the first to hear the news.

At the Democratic National Convention next month, we're going to kick off the general election with an event that opens up the political process the same way we've opened it up throughout this campaign.

Barack has made it clear that this is your convention, not his.

On Thursday, August 28th, he's scheduled to formally accept the Democratic nomination in a speech at the convention hall in front of the assembled delegates.

Instead, the convention will move to an outdoor stadium where Barack will join more than 75,000 people for a huge, free, open-air event and deliver his acceptance speech to the American people.

It's going to be an amazing event, and Barack would like you to join him. Free tickets will become available as the date approaches, but we've reserved a special place for a few of the people who brought us this far and who continue to drive this campaign.

If you make a donation of $5 or more between now and midnight on July 31st, you could be one of 10 supporters chosen to fly to Denver and spend two days and nights at the convention, meet Barack backstage, and watch his acceptance speech in person. Each of the ten supporters who are selected will be able to bring one guest to join them.

Make a donation now and you could have a front row seat to history:

https://donate.barackobama.com/DNCconvention

We'll follow up with more details on this and other convention activities as we get closer, but please take a moment and pass this note to someone you know who might like to be there.

It will be an event you'll never forget.

Thank you,

David

Seems basic knowledge.

Even many non lawyers understand this concept.

But obviously the Haaavaad-trained constitutional law “professor” and his brilliant team couldn’t put two and two together.

BUSTED!

Of course, some speculation was that while many people would donate $5 and "enter", it wasn't going to be a pure lottery and the winners would be selected by committee.

He’s just trying to add to the messiah aura. Not sure I think it’s safe to be there.

Ah - so it's alright for people to pick and choose which laws they will/won't follow?

A week or so ago, he had to quickly ditch his Presidential Seal - that was illegal too.

We know he's ignorant but it's looks like he surrounds himself with ignorant advisers too.

You can bet (oops) that anyone who doesn’t donate is not going to win a trip. :-)

The so-called Democratic party offered a similar deal to the Michigan and Florida delegations, didn't it? ;') Thanks geo.

What’s most significant is that Obambi and his advisers are too dim-witted to have realized that such issues are involved..... so much for the competence of the Obambi team!!!

In which case it was fraud since that selection process was not (and is not) being disclosed to the public at the point of entry.

Shouldn’t they have to disclose the “rules” of the sweepstakes (no purchase necessary) someplace?

Even this “drawing” violates longstanding law.

This further shows that Democrats like BO have no respect for the law nor fair play.

Rules are only for us little people.
