Global warming causing California glacier to grow, scientists say Last Updated: Wednesday, July 9, 2008 | 2:40 PM ET CBC News

The glaciers on Mount Shasta in California are growing because of global warming, experts say.

"When people look at glaciers around the world, the majority of them are shrinking," said Slawek Tulaczyk, a University of California, Santa Cruz, professor who studied the glaciers.

But the seven glaciers on Shasta, part of the Cascade mountains in northern California, "seem to be benefiting from the warming ocean," he said.

As the ocean warms, more moisture evaporates. As moisture moves inland, it falls as snow — enough on Shasta to more than offset a 1 C temperature rise in the past century.

The three smallest of the Shasta glaciers are more than twice the length they were in 1950.

Global warming causes everything. It’s almost entertaining (if it weren’t so maddening) to watch “experts” link everything to global warming, even diametrically opposite weather/geological events.

The left has so abandoned reason they’re willing to swallow anything. I seriously don’t believe there is an ill or evil on this earth they can’t believe has some kind of sinister, political origin. The age of the internet and undreamt of technology has somehow spawned a new Dark Age of Ignorance such as the world has never experienced. It’s absolutely contrarian.

As many as 90 per cent of Earth's mountain glaciers are getting smaller, said Lonnie Thompson from Ohio State University.

Yeah, or as few as 10%... I can make up numbers too!

There are an estimated (!) 180,000 glaciers on earth. I know that "academics" have a lot more free time on their hands than their working counterparts in the real world, but are we to believe that anyone has done a comparative study of something in the neighborhood of 162,000 glaciers?

Yeah, sure they have.

Interesting. Warmer ocean causes MORE WATER VAPOR. Water vapor forms clouds, that reflect sunlight back into space until they dissipate as rain or snow. And this NEGATIVE feedback is omitted from the climate models, except as an average over the entire globe rather than specifically as clouds form and disappear.

Retreat of glaciers since 1850

If you look closely at the following figure, Shasta is a shadow of blue surrounded by all the other orange and brown representing the other Cascade glaciers. There's one further north; I'm not sure which one that is.

Howdy! I’m enjoying my Iced Vodka and this story makes perfect sense to me too! Of course warming causes cooling. When it’s real hot out, and I open the freezer door, all the ice jumps out of the freezer and into my kitchen. Doesn’t this happen with all of you too?

It's not that simple, and cloud effects on radiative feedback are still uncertain. The type of cloud and its altitude are significant factors in ultimately determining if the effects of the clouds will be more importantly reflective or absorptive.

Actually, I'm a big fan of actual science (in contrast to Global Warming theories), and I think most science done these days is sound.

If anything, the Global Warming fraud does serve as a lesson of what happens when science gets politicized, and becomes more about politics and agendas, than actual scientific work.

When I was younger, whenever I would read someone quoting "studies" or "research" I would picture a vast team of dedicated research scientists in laboratories wearing white coats and carrying clipboards, amassing large amounts of data and publishing it with brilliant analysis and conclusions.

Now, alas, I realize the "studies" are more likely coming from a grant-seeking agenda-driven loner using Wikipedia or Reader's Digest for primary source documentation.

>>>It takes cold to turn that moisture into snow. If this is due to global warming, where did the cold come from?

The 14,000 feet of elevation provides a lot of cold. You could have a rise in average temperature at the top of the mountain, that if still below freezing would promote glacier growth.
As one who grew up in the snow belt of western NY, I can tell you that warm winters can lead to snowier winters. Most winters, Lake Erie would freeze completely in January and February, so cold winds out of Canada would not have a lot of moisture when they hit the higher elevations in WNY. In warmer winters, Lake Erie would not completely freeze over and those same winds would pick up moisture off the lake and deposit large quantitites of lake effect snow on WNY.
