Barack Obama said yesterday that “instead of worrying about whether immigrants can learn English,” Americans “need to make sure your child can speak Spanish.” A national telephone survey conducted last month by Rasmussen Reports found that U.S. voters overwhelmingly disagree with the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee. (see video)
Eighty-three percent (83%) place a higher priority on encouraging immigrants to speak English as their primary language. Just 13% take the opposite view and say it is more important for Americans to learn other languages.
In his comments, Obama emphasized the economic benefits of learning a second language: “If you have a foreign language, that is a powerful tool to get a job.” Data suggests that most voters see the issue in a broader context.
A separate survey found that one factor fueling the anger over immigration is the belief that most government officials encourage immigrants to retain the culture of their home country. This helps explain why voters who are angry about immigration are primarily angry at the government, not immigrants. Among those angry about immigration, 59% believe most government officials encourage immigrants to retain their home country culture.
Last fall, a Rasmussen Reports survey found that 77% of Americans believed that employers should be allowed to require employees to speak English while on the job. With the Supreme Court recently upholding tougher standards for voter identification at the polls, 65% of voters now believe election ballots should only be printed in English. Thirty-two percent (32%) say they should be printed in both English and Spanish.
The importance of assimilation into the culture is highlighted in another recent survey: 54% of voters say it is more important to encourage all immigrants to embrace American culture than it is to reduce the number of immigrants. Just 36% take the opposite view and say reducing immigration is a higher priority. That survey, as with many others, also found a strong preference for ballots and other government documents to be printed in English only.
Only 26% believe that every American should be able to speak at least two languages. In his recent comments, Obama said parents should be thinking, “How can your child become bilingual? We should have every child speaking more than one language.“
Broken down along party lines, 79% of Republicans and 59% of Democrats reject the idea that all Americans should know multiple languages. Among unaffiliated voters, 68% say their fellow citizens do not need to know a language other than English.

The video is on the most viewed on youtube, and usually there are dozens of Obama followers leaving positive comments. But this vid gets almost all negative comments, including comments to the effect that he should be more concerned with American kids learning to speak, read, and write English before he pushes for a second language. (BTW, does Obama speak a second language, just wondering?)
And that they don't shows just how low the GOP has sunk.
That is a tailor made commercial for Nevada and Colorado. That would take those states out of play for Obama. This commercial might impact California, too.

Immigrants actually want to learn English, too. One of the problems with this forced “bilingualism” (not only in Spanish, but Hmong, Chinese and a host of other languages in different parts of the country) is that immigrants know their kids are never going to learn English well and will never get ahead. But places like New York City, for example, had a policy of automatically putting any child with an Hispanic surname who moved into the district into a “bilingual” class. The city was even sued by one family of third-generation Americans who spoke not a word of Spanish but had an Hispanic surname and couldn’t get their kid out of the bilingual class.
So when people get hysterical about immigrants not learning English, it might be appropriate to look at the policies of your city and state governments that encourage this.

I was at the doctor’s ofice last week and there was a woman ahead of me who was unable to speak one word of English and just stood mutely in front of the receptionist. I watched as both receptionists tried valiantly to communicate with this woman with the little spanish that they knew and the woman still stood mutely. Then they got on the phone and made several calls trying to find someone who spoke spanish to come help find out what this woman needed.
All I could think was that if I were in ANY other country in the world, you could bet your bottom dollar that I would be trying my absolute hardest (translation dictionary, pointing, gesturing, etc...) to attempt to communicate with the receptionist in the doctor’s office.
My husband said that she’s probably been so coddled by government agencies bending over backwards to help her that she just assumed everyone should accomodate her lack of ability to communicate.

He does the Islamic call to prayer in “fluent Arabic”, according to Nick Kristoff.

One of the dumber statements I’ve ever heard from a politicians, but few of the Obama followers will care.
It’s great for Americans to learn a second language, but it’s also still true that few Americans work or live in a situation where they would use a second language on a frequent basis. UNLESS, someone thinks we should learn the language of the illegal alien invaders to accommodate them, instead of the other way around.
But there are those employers who want supervisors who speak Spanish so they can hire the cheapest available labor, and there are politicians who want government to hire interpreters who speak Spanish as a way of pandering and buying votes with future citizenship for illegal aliens.
One wonders if Obama’s girls speak spanish.
For sure that youngest daughter is much too disrespectful of her father. Too bad she is taking after her mother in that respect.
We can turn Colorado back to red with a little effort.

I refuse to learn spanish ever. English or nothing. Cant speak english then I dont want or care what they have to say.

I know there are some cases where immigrant parents object to bilingual education, but if there were a large majority who did not want it, bilingual education would end. If very many object, they sure are quiet about it.

Everyone I know here who is currently freaking out about illegal immigration from Mexico, etc., is a Democrat, and all are English-only speakers.

From the start it’s been clear that Michelle Obama has nothing but disdain for her husband. That she allows her little girl to be so disrespectful is pitiful.

Next she’ll be suing the doc for not having a spanish speaking receptionist. Just how did the woman manage to make an appointment. How did she arrive at the doctor’s office.

For all the hand wringing about Obama, he is the weakest candidate in modern history. He couldn't get half his own party to vote for him, and despite months of fawning media coverage and a total absence of McCain and the GOP, his lead is still small. People don't like the guy and they don't like his policies.
And yet, the GOP won't embrace the policies that would crush this guy, 1980 style. It's a sad state of affairs.
I think this is another example of a candidate who views the world first and America second. He’s a globalist who sees nothing worth fighting for in the name of our country.
This guy is dangerous, but can say whatever he wants because people are not listening, but will vote for him anyway...
What a terrific country I live in, with really decent people. 54 percent say it is more important to have immigrant learn our language than to reduce the number of immigrants. I don’t think you’ll find any other country in the world that is so welcoming of people who are willing to come here, who agree to obey our laws and learn our common language. America-haters like Obama and other liberal Democrats are always putting down the greatest country that has ever existed.
