`Aggressive Diplomacy` Needed with Iran: Obama
Zee News ^ | 07.09.2008 | Bureau Report

Washington, July 09: Democratic presumptive presidential nominee Barack Obama on Wednesday urged "aggressive diplomacy" as well as economic sanctions to get Iran to change its actions after Tehran's missile test.

Iran earlier today test-fired a missile it said is capable of reaching Israel, angering the United States amid growing fears that the standoff over the contested Iranian nuclear programme could lead to military conflict.

The Shahab-3 was among a broadside of nine missiles fired off simultaneously at 8:00 am (0900 IST) from an undisclosed location in the Iranian desert, state television pictures showed.

"There's no doubt we're seeing rising tensions in the area. And it's part of the reason why it's so important for us to have a coherent policy with respect to Iran," Obama told reporters.

Iran "must suffer threats of economic sanctions with direct diplomacy opening up channels of communication so we avoid provocation, but we give strong incentives for the Iranians to change their behaviour," he said.

And "we have to have a kind of aggressive diplomacy which unfortunately has been absent over the last several years. If we don't, we're going to continue to see rising tensions that could lead to real problems," Obama added.

The Democratic Party’s White House hopeful added that it was time for the US role to return to centre stage with Iran.

"Part of the problem that we've got right now is that we've been basically farming out the diplomatic activity to the Europeans. We've got to be actively engaged," Obama said.

The way he is veering to the right these days, he's probably going to call for air strikes by the end of the month.

Look for him to show up at a Synagogue wearing a Yarmulke within the next few days as well.

We’ve been engaged in aggressive diplomacy with Iran for 7 years. No results.

Obama conveniently overlooks that teensy-weensy little fact.

As well as the fact Iran threatened to wipe Israel off the map.

No, no ... I think you missed it. For a Democrat the word aggressive means ... capitulation, in the quickest and easiest way possible.

Bush gave it to Husseins European buds to do and they have made insignificant inroads. I cannot trust this neophyte with national security.

Actually, when you think about it, the Dems insisted that we should defer to our allies in diplomatic matters involving rougue nations like Iran, which is what Bush did. They were against “going it alone.” The Europeans have been meeting with the Iranians around the clock for 7 years. Bush has been playing the “bad cop,” periodically rattling the saber in order to give the Europeans a little credibility.

Despite all this, the Dems are not happy. They demand that Bush himself meet with the Iranians directly. Relying on the Europeans is not enough for them.

They should arrange for Iranian police to find US military uniforms folded neatly in luggage lockers at the Tehran bus station. About a hundred of them, along with street maps showing Ahmadinejad's house. Just to keep them guessing. About the time Cheney is visiting all the Gulf emirates, maybe making a stopover in western Afghanistan at some old abandoned air base near the Iranian frontier.

Meanwhile Bush could give another of his "Putin's soul" remarks, thanking Vlad for all of his invaluable aid.

Just messing with them.

Agressive diplomacy?

Its a nuanced thing. Its a bit over your head, and you would have a hard time understanding.

If I may speak on Obomba's behalf: An aggressive diplomacy is a tad more than an ambitious diplomacy, but a hair less than an assertive diplomacy, while being along the lines of an ambitious diplomacy. Its an intense level, just shy of provocative, and a whiff more than a scathing diplomacy.

I hope that clears it up for all of us neanderthals, who are not mentally apt to handle the Obamessiah's nuanced use of the ENGLISH language.

Has anyone mentioned that “aggressive diplomacy” or “aggressive negotiatons” was a joke line spoken by Natalie Portman in a Star Wars movie? Likewise Obama’s position is a joke.

Hey Barak - we attempted “aggressive diplomacy” with North Korea for years - it didnt work. So how the h**l can he beleive it will work with the Iranians?? If McCain were not asleep at the helm in this campaign, he would be beating Obama over the head with this fact.
