The Democratic leaders in Congress will not allow us to explore for oil and gas in parts of Alaska, offshore America, and now is the time for them to change their mind, President Bush said at the conclusion of the G-8 summit in Japan on Wednesday.
Bush, in his concluding statement on the summit, said he firmly believes that oil exploration can be done in environmentally friendly ways.
High energy prices were among the major topics of discussion at the summit of the worlds leading industrialized nations.
According to President Bush, the G-8 leaders agreed that to bring oil prices down, both supply and demand must be addressed:
On the supply side, oil and production refining capacity need to be increased, Bush said. On the demand side, we agreed to take new steps to increase energy efficiency, and we agreed that fuel subsidies that artificially inflate demand should be eliminated or reduced.
Bush made the comments one day after House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) sent a letter to the president, urging him to use your authority as President to draw down a small portion of the oil held in the Strategic Petroleum Reserve in order to expand available supplies and help reduce the record prices that are helping push the economy toward recession.
Pelosi noted that oil prices have increased from less than $30 a barrel to a record high of nearly $150 a barrel since your administration took office.
Republicans note that oil prices have more than doubled since Pelosi herself took over the speakers office, promising that Democrats have a plan to lower gas prices
On the contrary, oil and gasoline prices have soared 75 percent since Democrats took control of Congress, Republican leaders say. They call it the Pelosi premium.
In her July 8 letter to Bush, Pelosi insisted that tapping the Strategic Petroleum Reserve is more than justified by the destabilizing impact that gasoline price increases are having on the economy.
She noted that Bush himself tapped the SPR in aftermath of Hurricane Katrina to help reduce crude oil prices. Both Presidents Clinton and George H.W. Bush also tapped the SPR once each.
Releasing oil from the Reserve is a tool to manage our national and economic security, and when judiciously used will in no way jeopardize national security, Pelosi said. The Reserve is currently 97 percent full -- the highest level ever -- with enough oil to meet our national security needs.
Pelosi said using a small portion of the reserves would provide much needed assistance to American consumers facing record prices and help our economy during a serious period of instability.
Yes, boost supply, Republicans say
House Republican leader John Boehner (R-Ohio) found it interesting that Pelosi is calling for President Bush to release oil supplies from the SPR: In doing so, shes admitting that increasing the supply of oil will help reduce the price of gasoline, Boehner said.
I agree that more supply is necessary, and so do my House Republican colleagues who have been arguing for decades in favor of more American energy production, Boehner continued. Until the Speaker and her colleagues in the liberal Democratic leadership of Congress unlock our nations vast natural energy resources, consumers will continue to see skyrocketing prices at the pump.
House Republicans are calling for an all-of-the-above energy plan that increases production of American energy, encourages conservation, and promotes alternative fuels.
Republicans say Democrats are too beholden to their environmental allies to allow American energy production.
In poll after poll, Americans are saying enough is enough and demanding more production of American energy, Boehner said. Todays proposal by Speaker Pelosi is another acknowledgment that we must do more to increase our energy supply, and House Republicans will continue pushing Democratic leaders to act on real reforms on behalf of the American people.
Notice Finished Petroleum Products and Finished Motor Gasoline. Where would Madam Speaker expect to refine a drawdown from the Strategic Reserve?
What an empty headed clown she is.
Dillweed!
More Nothing from Do Nothing Nancy.
If you like $5/gal, Thank Congress in Nov.
Pray for W and Our Troops
Geeze, she’s a dope.
But, I blame the GOP. We did little to stop her rise to the top. And before we know it, Maxine Waters will be sitting in her chair if we don’t get our chit together!
We can’t release our way out of this.
Pelosi has taken a bill to open the continental shelf and ANWAR to drilling off the calendar so Congress can’t vote on it. That’s how concerned she is..not about her poor, suffering constituents, but that the Dems would vote with the Republicans to pass it. She is the worst Speaker of the House EVER.
“What an empty headed clown she is.”
You’re giving clowns a bad name. It’s interesting how the mainstream media and nighttime comedians all pick on Bush’s low approval ratings (”Bush turned 62 today . . . that’s twice his approval rating [ha ha they all laughed]”-Conan O’Brian), but nothing is said or joked about congress’s 9% approval rating.
I would say the following if I were Bush:
“Nancy, I would open up the reserve, if you and your Democrat friends would allow us to start drilling for oil domestically. Once new domestic fields came on-line there would be little need for the reserve.
Further, even if I were to open up the reserve, there aren’t enough refineries in this country to process the stuff. However Nancy, because you and your political party refuse to allow more refineries to be built, the last one being built when disco was king. Instead opening up the Reserve will not allow more gasoline to reach the consumers as it still must be refined.
Change your policies, and I will open up the Reserve, otherwise it is a useless, gesture.”
Sincerely,
G.W.B.
Releasing oil from the SPR reduces inventories on hand, adding upward, not downward price pressure.
And the reply should be that we will go to the Strategic Reserve if, and only if, the Democrats in Congress also agree to increased domestic drilling.
If there unwilling to Drill they could at least get rid of the taxes.
B.S. Leave this oil alone. We may need it much worse if there is war in the mid-east.
haha! good one!
I was wondering the same thing. I don’t mean to be sexist, but why do many of the women in Congress seem to have half a brain or no brain at all. Women I meet every day seem to be scholars compared to Nancy, plus they have common sense which is never seen in Congress.
Brilliant!
President Bush should continue on a daily basis demand that congress open at least the Outer Continental Shelf and only after such vote will he release some from the SPR.
A creative idea: Make ANWAR the future reserve...As it starts to give...enlarge the reserve so we can feel a little confident in the future...rather than searching a haystack for creative stupidity like ethanol.
This is pretty brutal stuff for CNN. The energy situation has become chaotic. No wonder their approval rating is at
9%.
In the meantime, I hear Prius hybrids are going for 6K over sticker. Every dealer is still only 2 a month and they take bids on them.
Insane, just insane.
Short term, that hurts in the wallet. Maybe that's the stake in the heart of the donkeys on Nov 4.
About what I expected from that stupid wench....
Thanks for the links.
Here is why the Republicans are going to get clobbered in November. If anybody had any brains at RNC, RCCC, RSCC, there would be ads run on TV with Pelosi's quote in the background while images of abandoned cars and closed factories and crying kids not getting a ride to their Little League or soccer games flicked across the TV.
In 1980, not only did Reagan win, but the Republicans took the Senate and made big gains in the House. One of the reasons was an effective campaign that started early. It included a TV ad that had Tip O'Neil riding along in his limousine laughing while the driver keeps wanting to stop for gas because he's running dry. This was just after O"Neil and Carter's screw ups resulted in the second gas line crisis. Finally the limo runs out of gas and a befuddled O'Neil is stuck on the side of the road asking what happened.
Don't expect a similar ad about Pelosi from the current Republican clowns.
But, but, but....... all the Dems said increasing supply wouldn’t help.
Figures Queen Pelosi would be the first to break ranks and show their hypocrisy.
Which just shows how little the American people have learned up to this point. They would be better off financially, in the long run, to buy a small, high mileage vehicle.
Priuses are overrated in the mileage department and the difference between one of them and a real economy gas car nowhere near compensates for the difference in vehicle purchase price. Or potential maintenance expense.
In the grand scheme of things hybrids, as they are now, are not much more than an environmental pipe dream. Until we are willing to seriously confront the supply side of the energy equation, this kind of thing is feel good BS.
So, let me get this right. Releasing a few million barrels of oil from the strategic reserves will lower the price at the pump... for a few days, if it has any effect at all, but drilling in ANWR and off the coasts where the wells will provide a few million barrels per day, EVERY DAY won’t loser the price at the pump?
Just wait until those hybrid batteries start showing up in the landfills. Then we will see some interesting explanations. Sort of like the gas additives that ended up in the ground water.
I doubt it will lower the price at all. Any drop in inventory sends the bidding up, up and away these days.
At these level it would be useless and not only that, a waste of the reserves. Florida, California and Alaska are all going have to open up drilling.
OOOO GOODY!!!
Lets dump the Home Heating Oil Reserve TOO,,,
All 10 days worth,,,
And take away Air Force 3,,,
She can just ride her Broom...:0)
You got that right. "Strategic" has a special meaning, and we should not tap those reserves as a response to high prices. The reserves should be tapped only if there's a shortage that makes petroleum products unavailable. The quick fix is rarely the right way to go.
She just wants to bring prices down a bit to take the issue out of the minds of voters until after the elections.
She is a scumbag.
Thank the Democrats for blocking domestic oil exploration, refusing to consider the extension of tax cuts and generally showing no understanding of their laws on the economy. Why else would they elect incompetent pinheads like Harry Reid and Nancy Pelosi to positions of leadership?
Heaven help us if Barack Obama ends up in the White House with this Congress ready to send him their idiotic bills.

What a goat cluster-copulation this has all become....We the people of the United States have to literally ‘beg’ Nancy Pelosi and her band of Dem Slimes to ‘allow’ us to get more of our own oil? Utterly maddening.....They want change??? let’s give them the CHANGE they deserve and throw their rotten carcasses out of office!
Pelosi is a criminal.
You could run the ad in the week before Nov 4. The moderates and independents are not that stupid. $4+ gallons of gas hurts.
Environmental support dips vs. economy - poll (nearly three in four favor offshore drilling)
Only the willfully stupid or ignorant don't know who's fault this is - dems and RINOs are responsible for this. At least McRINO can read the wind. The GOP should be able to wrap this energy mess on the donkeys, and take back Congress.

Interesting info at that site...
~~~
” According to the World Factbook[5], the United States imports a net 12 million barrels (1.9×106 m³) of oil a day (MMbd), so the SPR holds about a 58-day supply. However, the maximum total withdrawal capability from the SPR is only 4.4 million barrels (7.0×105 m³) per day, making it a 160 + day supply.”
That sure ain’t much...:0/
good point.
Remember the school lunch campaign? Just because repubs wanted to reduce the estimated INCREASE in spending, they got labelled as CUTS (in school lunches!the poor children!)
Every year the NEA goes bonkers with ads during budget time.
Why aren’t we going after Pelosi?
Why don’t the oil companies, themselves, defend themselves with ads?
Why can’t it be shouted from the rooftops what promise there is in ANWR?
This is so frustrating.
Everyone should be emailing this address to everyone they know...
“Women I meet every day seem to be scholars compared to Nancy, plus they have common sense which is never seen in Congress.”
well - to be fair, you could say the same thing about the liberal men in Congress.
Heck - most men I know seem like scholars compared to the dems presidential nominee.
Hinchey is my local critter. He’s just as unhinged as Pelosi, if not more so.
“Pelosi noted that oil prices have increased from less than $30 a barrel to a record high of nearly $150 a barrel since your administration took office. “
But, but...I thought we went to war for the oil. So we could take advantage of the Iraquis and steal their oil to fuel our insatiable desire for cheap fuel to keep our murderous SUVs humming.
What’s that? prices went up? The SUVs are sitting in used car lots?
Oh I see!
Prices go down - Bush is a bad guy.
Prices go up - Bush is a bad guy.
nice how that works.
kinda similar to how both hot and cold temperatures are proof of global warming.
Good post potlatch!
.
It’s time for us to re-expose Pelosi and the left
Her free jumbo-butt-jet (for her family too?)
Red Rangel’s free huge Caddy 4wd SUV-Limo (& free gasoline!)
$4.50/gallon is a joke to them
-
I’ll be continuing my
“America Graffiti” graphics of liberals
Lol, thanks devolve. I had to post that one, not much opportunity to use it.
More Grafitti to come huh? Keep it coming.
LOL! Looks like she is on an “Angry Honeymoon” with that jet! ROTF!
Lol, it’s an old one I spent a lot of time making. Remember when she wanted her ‘own’ government jet?
