ACLU of Illinois Urges Senator Obama to Vote No on FISA 'Deal'
Mon Jul 7, 10:24 AM ET

CHICAGO, July 7 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- As the United States Senate returns from the Independence Day recess to debate a major overhaul of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA), the American Civil Liberties Union of Illinois today called on Senator Barack Obama to vote no and reject this unconstitutional measure. Last month, the House of Representatives passed the FISA Amendments Act of 2008 (H.R. 6304), a bill that not only allows for the wide, sweeping and unwarranted collection of Americans communications, but also grants immunity to telecommunications companies for their collaboration in domestic spying. The Senate is expected to vote on the bill as early as tomorrow, July 8. The ACLU of Illinois strongly opposes this legislation.

Since 9/11 it seems the Bush administration, with Congress as a willing accomplice, has sidestepped our most cherished constitutional principles whenever convenient, said Colleen K. Connell, executive director of the ACLU of Illinois. Senator Obama recognized the need to protect these principles and the rule of law last summer - he should not cave to the Bush Administration now.

In August 2007, Senator Obama not only voted against allowing President Bushs warrantless spying program to continue, but also made strong statements highlighting his intense opposition to the Bush domestic spying program and to granting a get out of jail free card to the telecoms for collaborating with the White House. More recently, he has said that he will support the measure now before the Senate.

After years of being outraged at the Bush administrations flagrant disregard for FISA, Congress now is poised to give the president even greater powers to spy on our phone calls and emails, added Connell.

I never thought I'd live to see the day Obama stuck it to Hillary, the Left and the ACLU!

Uh, hasn’t ACLU been trying to overturn FISA for a long time? If they can prove it’s illegal, why haven’t they?

The American Library Association is aligned with the ACLU in this matter, as usual:

June 20th, 2008 - "ALA Disappointed with House Passage of FISA." Just look at that press release to see pure propaganda from the President of the American Library Association like this: "Providing retroactive immunity for phone companies continues the Administration's unconstitutional use of private corporations to needlessly spy on Americans." And people are supposed to respect the ALA's opinion? Why just recently, an ALA leader apparently chose to defame American troops: "American Troops Defamed by ALA Councilor Peter McDonald. Another one said, "the Bush Administration ... lied." For that, see "ALA Defends Book Confiscation Worldwide by Communist/Terrorist Regimes? SafeLibraries Asks ALA Councilor James Casey to Clarify Anti-American Stand."

Also relevant: "ALA Contradicts Itself With Verizon Grant," by Library Stuff. And by myself, "ALA Opposes FISA; Joins Soros, ACLU, and PFAW to Restrict War on Terror."

A former ACLU leader is now the leader in the ALA office that issued the press release. What a coincidence.

Many people use the library computers so they can view what they want without retribution.I have had to use the public library computers out of necessity as mine has burps once in a while.
When users do not log off, what can be viewed is disgusting.I have had the shock of seeing some.
Anything can be abused if not used properly.Even the first amendment.Sad that certain groups think deviance is acceptable. It will get worse before it gets better as the saying goes.
And our Govt.subsidizes this stuff.I.E.ACLUNATICS

"I have had to use the public library computers out of necessity as mine has burps once in a while."

Obviously you have a Windows "computer." Throw it out and get an Apple. Now that's a computer.

You know, you can do something to stop that p*rn problem you described. The myth that libraries must accept p*rn because it is legally protected is just that, a myth. Likely existing laws can be used to require the library to act within those laws and close the floodgates to p*rn. If you want, I'll speak with you about this. I'll send my phone number via private message. Basically, it's a matter of getting the government and the public to see the American Library Association propaganda as propaganda, and to get them to see what laws and court cases exist and could and should be followed, instead of ALA agendas.
