Divided They Fall ["Clinton's big-money backers are deflecting money"]
Time ^ | July 10, 2008 | MICHAEL KINSLEY

Posted on 07/10/2008 3:06:09 PM PDT by Berlin_Freeper

Consider the Republican Party. Many Republicans dislike John McCain with a passion that has lasted for years. Asked to explain, they refer to the McCain-Feingold campaign-finance-reform law (which they thought, incorrectly as it turns out, would bite Republicans more than Democrats), or his opposition (since rescinded) to the Bush tax cuts, or what they regard as his tiresome and preening routine as a maverick. They resent his mutual love affair with the press (which he jokingly refers to as "my base"). They remember a lot of foolish talk a while back about how McCain might switch parties and become a Democrat. And yet almost all of these McCain haters will vote for him in November.

Now consider the Democratic Party. The one-on-one rivalry between Senators Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama lasted only about three months from beginning to end. Their policy disagreements are negligible. For many Clinton supporters, the chance to elect an African-American President represents the culmination of a cause they have been fighting for all their lives. Yet almost half of Clinton supporters tell pollsters that they will not vote for Obama. And Clinton's big-money backers are deflecting money and energy away from their party's presumptive nominee.

Stopped reading here. Leftist propaganda.

No, we thought it was unconstitutional and an attack on the first amendment. I stopped reading after that piece of garbage "analysis" from Kinsley.

Does McCain-Feingold help limit the influence of leftist organizations like “Moveon.org”, or various Soros’ creations? The Democrats’ fellow-travellers do seem to raise a lot of money for propaganda. (This is just a question — I don't know — I'm not defending anything.)

“So they are taking their revenge on people without health care, women who need abortions, and others who they (if they supported Hillary) must think will be harmed by a Republican victory in the fall. That’ll show ‘em.”

Women who NEED abortions. Give me a break.

I cannot believe the amount of bias in that article. Unbelievable.

No.

Even if it did, MF/CFR is an unconstitutional restriction on the First Amendment guarantee of freedom of speech, no matter whose ox is being gored. The US Supreme Court ruled narrowly in supporting one part of it, and there have been some indications from a few of the justices that the SCOTUS does not necessarily support MF across the board. Of course, the SCOTUS ruling one way or the other doesn't necessarily make it so. Most people here agree that their interpretation of the "takings clause" is rabidly excessive, as is the present understanding of the "commerce clause." FReepers would reverse current law 9-0 if we ran the Court.

The best remedy to campaign corruption or illegal donor influence is cash only, and full disclosure of all contributions. Some libertarian groups oppose this, but there is not a carte blanche privacy protection of political activity in either our Constitution or our traditions and culture, as there is for free speech.

Just a point of curiosity.

What, in either the post Henry Luce regime of Time Magazine or personal history of Michael Kinsley makes this level of bias unbelievable?

I'd say McLoser won't get over 30% of the GOP vote. The GOP is dead.

Conservatives think it’s unconstitutional...not sure what all Republicans think.

No - it was designed by them to get around disclosure requirements, and to hide the fact that Democrats had fewer, but larger, donors.

It is unconstitutional as well.

(You forgot to put “Barfer” in the Title line..)

Oh and He also forgot to mention the most grevious betrayal by McCain (I’ll more than likely be voting for him though: Immigration)!

Thanks to both of you for the U.S. civics lesson. Now, I understand why it’s a problem.

Kinsley is his usual delusional self. The Republicans are mean-spirited, grasping, petty, and self-interested, but the Dems, oh, my no, check this howler out:

Affluent people who give to the Republican Party are advancing their own class interests, whereas those who give to the Democrats generally aren't. This suggests an admirable seriousness about their giving.

Heaven help the poor simpleton, I think he's serious. There are ostensibly intelligent people who cling to this puppy-dogs-and-kittens view of the American political landscape but they're seldom encountered outside of junior high school.

What he's lobbying for is for party solidarity at least, and if possible, a joint ticket. All must be one to oppose the evil Republicans! No enemies on the Left! Power To The People! Good night, Michael. Say your prayers and don't forget to wash behind the ears.

Not none of me, altho it's easier for me to say that, being in the bluest state in the Union....at least I'd never have to yelp that I'd voted for that son of a bitch.

The word "Kinsley" should have been ample warning of that. Still, while it was fun to read that Clinton backers are not lining up behind Obama, I believe that as much as anything this asshat has to say.
