AFL-CIO Falsely Attacks McCain
newsweek.com ^ | July 10, 2008 | Justin Bank

The AFL-CIO is attacking McCain with a TV spot saying he voted "against increasing health care benefits for veterans." Actually, he voted for increases in those benefits.

The labor federation points to McCain's votes against Democratic proposals to increase funding. Those were defeated along party lines, and then quickly followed by alternative measures to increase benefits by smaller amounts, all of which passed unanimously or with near-unanimous majorities. McCain supported all of them.

The AFL-CIO also points to a McCain vote against a war spending supplemental appropriations measure from 2007 that included additional funding for veterans' health care, along with much else. The measure passed the Senate along partisan lines but was vetoed by President Bush. But McCain voted for a later version of the supplemental that ultimately passed into law and actually included slightly more funding for veterans' benefits.

Analysis The AFL-CIO attack ad against John McCain starting airing today and is the first ad the labor federation has run in the 2008 presidential campaign. It will run in Michigan, Minnesota, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Virginia and Wisconsin for the next three weeks, according to a report in the Washington Post.

We find the ad, narrated by Vietnam Veteran Jim Wasser, to be unduly harsh on McCain's voting record on veterans' health benefits.

The AFL-CIO is lying? Say it isn’t so. Why I’m shocked. Shocked!

If the AFL/CIO was being honest, they would realize WHY he voted the way he did. When he voted against a bill it was because it didn’t do enough.

Calling John McCain anti-military is laughable. Now, if it were John Kerry....

Sorry upstanding leaders of the AFL-CIO, but I don’t believe you care more about veterans’ health benefits than a guy who spent five years getting tortured in a POW camp.

It doesn’t matter. This is what they did with Dole. They don’t need to be telling the whole truth. The headlines get massive play and the retraction, if any, is invisible. Most people will hear this sort of thing and several of them will stick. They used Dole’s votes to paint him less pro-life than Clinton.

The AFL-CIO is typical. My Dad belongs to the UMWA and they are all out boosting Obama and the Democrats even though coal has never did so well as it has under Bush and no one has provided as much funding for clean coal research. It doesn’t matter what Republicans do the Union leadership will continue to lie because they want to maintain control. It doesn’t matter how much it sells the values and livelyhood of its members out for a bit of power in the party of sexual activists, pro-abortion, anti-American, anti-domestic energy, big tax, big government socialists.

Sadly, this is true. We’ll have to wait and see what the McCain campaign does. And they will react.

If Lane Kirkland and George Meany were still alive, they’d kick Sweeney’s fat, worthless, pig Marxist ass.

Sweeney has betrayed every union worker in America with his ass-kissing support of eco-fascists and the chi-comms. He’s the most disgusting, traitorous labor leader in American history.

For you youngsters who don’t know, Mr. Kirkland supported Poland’s Solidarity movement with money to buy printing presses and paper, eventually helping to set Poland free and establish freedom. He’s a true American hero.

Why are we supposed to listen to unions? They ruined public education. They drove businesses out of this country. They bankrupted GM and Ford.

The Democrat’s policies have all but killed the airline industry, but ALPA just blames “Speculators.” They will shill for Obama; I’ll loose my job; but the union will always go for the Dims.

Obviously the strategy is to attack McCain and hope people forget the essence of Obama - but this may not be easy.

The AFL-CIO has become utterly repulsive. The Kirkland era is long over.

If Obama is elected, one of his early actions will be to nullify the Executive Order that mandated secret ballots in union matters.

Intimidation will subsequently be aggressive and physical in every manner against anyone having the temerity to declare openly (because of no secret ballot) that they do not want to be represented by a union.

All the unions should be given a Hoffa retirement.
