Dog Off the Menu for Olympics

BEIJING has asked hotels and restaurants in the city to take dog meat off the menu for the duration of next month's Olympics and September's Paralympics.
Dog is eaten by the large Korean community in China's capital and is also popular in Yunnan and Guizhou restaurants.
A directive from the Beijing Food Safety Office issued last month ordered Olympic contractor hotels not to provide any dishes made with dog meat and said any canine material used in traditional medicated diets must be clearly labelled.
Concerned that canine dishes might offend animal rights groups and Western visitors, Beijing said restaurants expected to be popular among foreign visitors must stop serving dog meat "to respect the dining customs of different countries".
The directive "advocated" that all restaurants serving dog suspend it during the Olympics but made no mention of the many popular establishments with donkey on the menu.
Criticism from Westerners caused the dog meat-loving South Koreans to ban canine dishes for a period of time during the 1988 Seoul Olympics.

If I was participating, I’d bring my own MREs to eat. Along with lots of water. I’d pay for the extra weight, too.

I would think so. EWWW!!! I don't know why the games are in that h-ll hole. If I ever wanted to see China I would get a dvd & stay home where the food is safe & cameras aren't watching my every move. IMHO having the games there is wrong. Just for the way they treat the people of Tibet is good enough reason to boycott them . Not to mention what poisons they send here in dog food, toys etc.

Yesterday’s local newspaper featured Chinese ‘quisine’.
The article sported a huge photo of a smiling Chinese woman proudly displaying a deep-fried scorpion on a stick.

And you’d be wrong.
Certain breeds such as St Bernards are especially prized for their “aphrodisiac” properties.
“Strays” may be more prevalent on the menu but purebred dogs are farmed like cattle, there.
They beat, torment and torture the dogs before they slaughter them because they believe that the fear-released adrenaline makes the meat more “powerful”.
And all that is done while the other dogs awaiting slaughter *watch*, just to amplify *their* terror.
Kinda like eating a Dog Agony Pie.
[this mimics “real satanic sacrifice”, btw...just a coincidence, I’m sure]

I watched a series called something like “Survivor Guy” for a while.
Bugs, worms, live fish, lichens, random weeds and grasses...whatever was not moving or moving slowly enough to catch...he ate it.
Usually with a preface comment like “Sure hope this isn’t poisonous”.
Crazy dude!

I agree with you. Its not being watched in this house & Sassy & I are still on the China boycott. I don't like animal abusers at all & I never knew they had breeder farms for dogs. I know about the poor bears but now I am more disgusted by China. I know quite a few people who aren't going to be watching the games.

I could never eat dog, or cat for that matter, but I’m very curious to know if there is a difference in taste between breeds. Would a poodle, German Shepherd and Great Dane all taste alike?

They taste about as similar as Australian Aborigines, Swedes and Arabs - or people from Pittsburgh, for that matter.

I am guessing the dogs they eat there are mostly like dingos, foxes, and other types.Guess again, my FRiend. Go to YouTube for pics of dog markets in China. The abuse and torture these poor animals face is awful. To me, it is one thing to have cultural differences in food, it is another to think that torturing your food will make it taste better. Chinese believe that the stress and fear the animal feels makes it taste better, so they have no compunction against beating the animal or even skinning it alive.

I heard about a diner in Beijing that found a chunk of automobile tire in his soup. He called the waiter over and demanded an explanation. The waiter said China was advancing and now the auto had replaced the horse.
Of course this story might be entirely true.
