Dallas County Commissioner Price - not offended by "black hole"..."hole of color" not necessary

HERE IS THE STORY. A black activist commissioner in Dallas County was upset in a meeting by the use of the term "black hole."

I called the Commissioners Court and asked for Commissioner Price. They connected me with his secretary, Melanie. We had a nice friendly conversation. It is not racist, and I am not afraid to say it, but her voice indicated that she was a black lady.

MELANIE: Commissioner Wiley.

DFU: Yes, ma'am, I'm Doug and I'm calling from California about the story of the black hole and Commissioner Wiley.

M: Yes, sir. (sort of a little of a chuckle...she has undoubtedly had lots of calls.

DFU: I teach an astronomy course at the local community college and I always try to be sensitive and not offend people. I am wondering if it would be better to use the term "hole of color" in my class.

M: No, that won't be necessary. Commissioner Wiley knows what a black hole is in astronomy.

DFU: Okay.

M: He is not offended by the phrase. This thing just escalated. There have been other comments in the past that led to this.

DFU: Oh, good. So it's okay to use "black hole," and I won't have to say "hole of color."

M: Yes, sir. He understands. That's fine.

DFU: That's a relief. Thank you. Goodbye.

M: Goodbye.

FOX - Dallas County Commissioner John Wiley Price is sticking to his comments that the term “black hole,” which a colleague used, is racist. Price also says language such as “angel food cake” and “devil’s food cake” is also racially insensitive.

I guess Melanie was trying to diffuse the situation. It has apparently become a Mexican standoff. :)

When my daughter was much younger she was invited to friend’s birthday party. The little girl’s mother asked my wife what kind of cake she would like since either side was a different flavor. My wife asked for a slice of ‘white cake’ and all hell broke loose. She was accused of being a racist for referring to the cake as ‘white’ and not ‘vanilla’. Needless to say, our social relationship ended immediately. I still feel bad for the kids.
