'S.C. is so gay'? State says no way (Overseas Homosexual Ad Campaign Cancelled)
The State ^ | 7/11/2008 | John O'Connor

Posted on 07/11/2008 12:02:36 PM PDT by Pyro7480

South Carolina’s top tourism agency has canceled an overseas advertising campaign targeting gay tourists.

The campaign, tied to gay pride week celebrations in London, included ads that proclaimed “South Carolina is so gay.” A handful of other U.S. destinations joined the campaign, including Atlanta, Boston and New Orleans.

After learning last week the state had agreed to spend tax money on the campaign — and spurred by a post on The Palmetto Scoop blog — the Department of Parks, Recreation and Tourism said Thursday it would not pay the tour operator.

Parks, Recreation and Tourism director Chad Prosser said an agency advertising manager signed off on the contract, proposed by the agency’s London advertising contractor.

The agency will not pay the roughly $4,942 fee to take part in the campaign.

Employees “exercised extremely poor judgment in approving participation in the program,” Prosser said. PRT, he said, will require more review of future overseas advertising, as it does with domestic advertising.

I guess I’ll never understand this kind of thing. Why would there be ad campaigns targeted at homosexuals or any specific group or sub-culture in the first place?

I’m sure the response of some might be that various tourist resorts advertise as being family friendly. But in general, doesn’t advertising and marketing of a tourist resort just target anybody who is interested in the beach, the mountains, skiing, or whatever the attractions of the place are?

I don’t have a problem with private companies advertising as they wish. It’s not taxpayer money.

But this IS taxpayer money. Let’s keep the tourism campaigns “ecumenical” as to controversial issues, shall we? Jeeze. (The libertarian in me wonders why states even HAVE tourism departments. Don’t other states do just fine without them — leaving the tourism-mongering to PRIVATE conglomerates of hotels and such??)

Tell me somethin... I was flippin channels on broadcast TV last night and FOX was havin some kinda "So You Think You Can Dance" show and I'm so old and stuffy that I can hardly determine one out of 10 words of the lyrics of todays girlie warbler songs...

But it sounded to me like this gal in a minnie skirt was singing about having "kissed a girl" and how much she "liked it" and like that!

Now tell me... Did I hear that right and is that some kind of pop tune that's made the bigtime right now???

Charleston, Hilton Head, and Myrtle Beach are starting to attract members of this community. Even some of the old colonial towns in the low country and Greenville have become magnets. Despite the sinful life style, many communities welcome them as they bring money along with entrepreneurship and business growth to the towns. For example, the revitalization of downtown Ashville, NC is usually credited to its gay community.

Easy! Im a South Carolina grad!!!!!!

gamecock

noun
1. a cock bred and trained for fighting
2. someone who is a very fierce fighter [syn: hell-kite]

It is actually a reference to Thomas “The Gamecock” Sumter, a Revolutionary War hero from SC.

Targeted marketing works very well. You try to find sub-groups that will be interested in your product or service. For example, you won't market high-end financial services in the ghetto, but will try to get target the membership list of the AMA or whatever.

I guess the idea is that homosexuals tend to be financially well-off, so they can be an attractive market segment.

During the 90’s there was a song about girl on girl kissing. It’s like they want to make sure they have one song for each 10 year period. In Europe there’s even an openly gay “Boy Band” ...even though they all look like middle aged men.

Bear Force One.

“The Gamnecock”. Such a “sissy” mascot you’d have thought that the Indian War and Revolutionary War Hero, Thomas Sumter, would have objected to having been dubbed the Carolina Gamecock.

Yup. the song's a big hit. It doesn't hurt that the singer is quite cute.

Has this ever happened before?

There have been some minor pop hits about this before, but not as big as this. But lesbian experimentation seems to be pretty big these days, especially among the young'uns (I say this at the ripe old age of 32. Damn kids! Get off my lawn. Grumble grumble)

Are you being sarcastic ...lol..? I know some freepers don’t really keep up with some of the network stuff that’s why I’m asking. To answer your question, it’s all over the place. I don’t watch too many shows but it does seem to be pretty prevalent. You know how shows would have the nosy neighbor during the 60’s and 70’s. Well that character has been replaced with the flamboyant gay confidante. Dr. Who even has a gay agenda.

I’m also thinking with the weakness of the dollar and gas prices there’s been a drop in large heterosexual families taking vacations and they want to make up the difference by catering to another segment. I heard a report a few years ago that said that gays have a lot of disposal income and they don’t mind spending it.

Her name is Katy Perry. She’s a Christian gospel artist (or at least was). I think her early work is under the last name Hudson.

There was another song about ten years ago called "I Kissed A Girl" by Jill Sobule, that got some airplay on MTV.
