Como Se Dice? Obama Clarifies Comments Over Foreign Languages

ABC News' Sunlen Miller reports: Sen. Barack Obama reiterated his belief Friday that America’s children to learn a foreign language, firing back against criticism he received from some conservative groups who suggested the Illinois senator wanted to make the United States a bilingual country.
Speaking in Powder Springs, GA on Tuesday Obama told the crowd that it’s embarrassing when Europeans come to the US and they all speak English. By comparison, Obama said, America’s young people do not have matching language skills.
“All we can say is merci beacoup,” Obama said. “We should be emphasizing foreign languages in our schools from an early age.”
The statements prompted outrage from some conservative groups who argued his remarks were an endorsement of the idea that Americans should be forced to learn Spanish. Americans for Legal Immigration PAC posted Obama’s comments on their website with the headline: “Voters Reject Obama’s Call for Bilingualism.”

While there are benefits to being bilingual, you make a good point that the world language of business is English.
So he doesn’t speak other languages himself? Why not, why didn’t he make the effort to learn, if it’s so important? My God, if he’s going to be president, and dealing with other countries and such, certainly he should know these other languages. He should be embarrassed himself.
There are around 300 distinct native ethnicities in Indonesia, and 742 different languages and dialects...

Mark Steyn was subbing for Rush today and he had a great comment on this... It went something like this.
According to Obama, we should be embarassed when americans go to France as tourists and can’t order food in French, but the illegal Spanish speaking immigrants (we don’t do it with other foreign speakers) that come here with the intention to stay forever have to be served and accomodated in Spanish everywhere - schools, voting booths, stores, phone, hospitals, etc, etc. No embarassement should be expected of them for not learning our language - we should be embarassed at home for not speaking their language!!!
He also pointed out that France has french as the official language - you go there to live, you better learn French. I respect them for that (as well as their widespread use of Nuclear Power!)

The O-man's tone was really strident when he said this. It sounded awful--the elitist snob really came out in that part of the speech. Americans will not tolerate this kind of lecturing, hectoring tone. Obama may no longer be the "teflon" candidate. His gaffes (and his wife's) will start to have a cumulative negative effect.
How many languages are BO and his kids fluent in?
I’m thinking that that really bad part is that a potential POTUS is embarrassed by the American people. I don’t recall any candidate or elected official making that sort of staement before....
The interesting thing is that tons of Americans speak all kinds of foreign languages, some because that want to and some because there is a business reason. In all cases, access to learning a foreign language is readily available, far after school years.

Interesting...but I’m absolutely sure his children are a wiz at foreign languages, otherwise, he would be an absolutely idiot to preach to us about what we teach OUR kid’s.

yes it is. You can buy one at the local book store for about $5. They come in handy when talking to know-it-all liberals about the “religion of peace.” It amazes them some of the things the false prohet spoke of. Even funnier is watching them try to pedal around what the Koran says.

I agree with him. As a retired English teacher, I am appalled at the grammar and spelling I hear and read.
We should master our own language first. And so should anyone wishing to live and work here.
