Gunmen kill 16, including police chief in northern Mexico

MEXICO - Gunmen killed 16 people, including a police chief, in a spate of separate shootouts across Mexico, which is grappling with a spike in drug-related violence, local officials said Thursday.

Six of the murder victims in Culiacan were inside a car repair shop, while three others were killed outside, the state attorney's office said. Reporters said the three victims outside the shop were police officers who rushed to the scene of the gunfire.

At practically the same time and also in Culiacan, one police officer was shot and killed at the wheel of his pickup truck. Another officer was killed and his partner wounded while they were driving a police vehicle, the officials said.

In northern Chihuahua state, a state police chief was dragged out of his house and shot execution style by gunmen, the local attorney general's office said, adding that the murdered officer had escaped another attempt on his life two weeks ago.

Four more men were found shot to death in Guadalupe, Calvo and Juarez, the Chihuahua state officials said.

Some 450 police officers have been killed in Mexico since the launch of a massive federal anti-drugs operation in December 2006.

President Felipe Calderon has sent some 36,000 federal troops into key areas controlled by trafficking organizations, especially into Sinaloa, one of the state most hit by drug-related violence.

Last month the US government approved a 1.6-billion-dollar, three-year package of anti-drug assistance to Mexico, Central America and the Caribbean known as the Merida Initiative, a large part of which is expected to strengthen Calderon's efforts.

This is just family values and all...I’m sure this is nothing more than a friendly target-shoot for employees sponsored by their employers.

Who are all these people getting killed in the past few months, especially the police officers? Are they all involved one way or the other with the mafia? Even the police?

It's a civil war between drug cartels and the cartels and the Mexican government. As Mexican troops and federal law enforcement shift from city to city, so does the cartel violence and cartel activity. And anyone can get caught in the crossfire, even in broad daylight.

resigned after a fellow officer was gunned down.

OK, as an X police officer, I can tell you that as a nation of warriors, which the UNITED STATES OF AMERICA is, there is one thought that comes to mind if this happened in the USA.

Quiting? Ah, NOoooo........SOMEONES GONNA PAY... does come to mind. You don't mess with the brotherhood without consequences.

W/O a doubt, you are right. And, in my experince, most cops are good people. There are always a few bad ones in any profession. FYI...There are ways to GET cooperation when needed!

This may sound silly, but in AMERICA, we still value truth, justice and the little guy.

A lot of cops become cops just to help people. And they do. I could tell stories, but won't bore you. Helping a stranded or helpless person really makes your day and makes up for all the crap a normal COP has to deal with. Its worth it. I would die before I let some miscreant kill my brother and walk. Trust me, most police officers feel the same way.

Well Mr. Piper, as my screen name suggests, I am south of the border for a while.

Your experience in the US is, I think, an accurate portrayal of the situation in the US.

In Mexico, on the other hand, corruption is more the norm. In private, you will learn that a murder can be covered up (or the prime suspect let slip) for the right price.

Have a 14 year old daughter who has a 21 year old stalker? Go to the court and get a restraining order, right?

Does not work if the police are related to the stalker.

Mexicans know the difference, they will tell you privately, “This would not happen in the US” when referencing police actions like this.

They respect you folks.

Just a thought, when the two guys with full auto rifles tried to rob a bank in California, what happened? They wound up dead!

Every cop in 30 miles headed that way to do battle with pistols. And Californian is weak kneed in the law enforcement area. (pamper perps.)

Did the COPS run? Ah NO....they headed towards the battle. USA, Nation of Warriors, don't forget it!

I am a US born citizen, not of Mexican ancestry.

The stories I related to you were told to me by neighbors and friends as I enjoy my legal stay in Mexico.

The women are cute. Speeds recovery.

Calderon has to be smiling these days. 1.6 billion gringo dollars to help him smuggle drugs into the USA and fight off the other drug gangs. Bet he gets a couple of new cars out of the deal too. We’re paying our enemies to attack us.
