Political Pulse: Jim Gilmore on the Issues

U.S. Senate candidate Republican Jim Gilmore made his way through the region this week. We sat down with him for a one-on-one chat to talk about the big issues. Everything from the economy to the war in Iraq and homeland security were up for discussion.

Gilmore, an army veteran, says there is a great deal of danger to the U.S. and this is no time to for people inexperienced in foreign policy to lead the country.

"We need to do something to protect the people of this country. I'm certainly well equipped to do that," said Gilmore (R).

"One thing we know for sure, drilling for oil now is going to give us more energy independence from foreign sources and that is also going to help the international situation. Terrorists feel they can push this country around because they are subject to many people overseas."

"We need to change that and I intend to do that."

Last time I checked, there was no reason to believe that Gilmore had any chance of winning. Has that changed?

Sure he has a great chance of winning. Warner has better name recognition only because he was Governor not long ago and also he has the same last name as the incumbent. Mark Warner ran for this same seat and lost against John Warner and there is no reason to believe he is a sure win this time. It is an open seat and Gilmore has a strong tax cutting record while Warner has never really faced strong scrutiny of his record because Governors in Virginia are limited to 1 term. Warner squandered a billion dollar surplus and sent government spending skyrocketing. The polling from Rasmussen has shown Gilmore closing the gap. This is going to be a close race but I think Jim Gilmore is going to win. He has the right message and is placing his fiscal and social conservatism in contrast to a liberal Mark Warner.
