WASHINGTON -- House Democrats moved Thursday to counter a Republican push for more domestic drilling with a proposal that would increase oil production from areas of Alaska already open to drilling.

"Democrats support increasing the domestic production of petroleum and other energy resources," House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer (D., Md.) said Thursday.
The issue cuts both ways for Democrats. They don't want to alienate environmental-minded supporters who are against additional drilling, but they don't want to cede the issue of increasing oil supplies to the Republicans.

The Republicans need to refuse to support any bill that does not open up ANWR. 70+% are for off shore drilling. And, the democrats really don’t care about the environment, they care about running the US into the ground so we can beg at their feet for our daily bread.
That’s not entirely true. Pelosi wants to sink wells straight into the Strategic Petroleum Preserve and suck out 10%. She’s 100% certain she can hit the underground salt cavern where it’s stored and will make all the oil companies look foolish with their dry holes.

What are the probability numbers on this. Has the industry unequivocally said that there is no oil in those regions, or that the odds of there being oil there are very poor in comparison to the places they do want to drill?
People CAN understand this, but I have not heard an explicit industry statement that the leases they bought turned out dry.
This is not drilling anywhere in ANWR, which needs to be done.
This is a red herring the Republicans better not let them get away with. We have the upper hand on this - and they best not let us lose it with these kinds of gimmicks the Democrats are putting out there.
The ‘rats want to drill in an area on the North Slope which has already been opened, but is reserved for future use by the Navy in case of national emergency, just as they want to release oil from the strategic oil reserve - in other words, they’re willing to allow more oil on the market but only if it’s done in a way which could potentially weaken our ability to defend ourselves in times of crisis - it’s just in their nature......
I hope the Republicans running against them hammer them with the issue.
