Goodbye, Joe?

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Despite assurances to the contrary from Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, Democratic insiders are certain Sen. Joseph Lieberman next year will be kicked out of the party's caucus and lose his Senate chairmanship if he addresses the Republican National Convention in St. Paul, Minn., as planned.

Lieberman's Democratic colleagues willing to accept his support of Sen. John McCain for president consider speaking to the GOP convention as the last straw. Lieberman was re-elected from Connecticut as an independent in 2006 after losing the Democratic nomination because of his support for the Iraq war.

After his 2006 election, the Senate Democratic leadership agreed to give Lieberman the Homeland Security Committee chairmanship if he provided the decisive vote to make the Democrats a 51 to 49 Senate majority. However, with additional Democratic senators likely to be elected this year, that agreement is expected to be null and void in the new Congress.

I don't think he really cares any more. I'm sure Lieberman would welcome it. He sees his party as having been taken over by the radical left. On foreign policy, he thinks America needs to win abroad and stand behind its allies. Which makes him anathema to his fellow Democrats despite his liberal views on domestic issues.

Lieberman wouldn’t even vote for the partial birth abortion ban. He should not come near the Republican convention.

Right.  He's great on matters of national security and I commend his pro-Israel stance, which is rare for liberal Jews.  But on domestic issues, you and I are totally at odds with him.

I am mystified with some conservatives’ love for this guy, Hannity especially. He is far left on abortion, 2nd Amendment, homosexual “rights” and engaged in a conspiracy to steal the 2000 presidential election. WTF?

Agreed. If there were more Democrats like him, America would have far few difficulties abroad.

In Lieberman's world, does that mean the left worships Stalin as God instead of just sending him Christmas cards?

Joe's right on certain aspects of defense, but I'd be hard pressed to identify any other reason to praise him. Otherwise, Joe's refusal to bow down to the anti-semites in his (former?) party are simply a matter of "Never Again" - survival. Even he can see where they are going.

Joe gives me cause to cheer anytime he tweaks the left's nose. The only thing having him speak at the convention would do for me is get me worrying about just how much McCain plans to take all of us to the left.

I can’t say I blame the Dems, especially after Lieberman endorsed McCain. There have been some Republicans who shouldn’t have remained in their caucus. Like John Anderson in 1980. Even as he was trashing the Reagan/Bush ticket and had pretty much renounced the party, he stayed in. The House leadership should have tossed him out.

"I am mystified with some conservatives’ love for this guy, Hannity especially."

I wouldn’t call it love, I would call it common enemy syndrome. The fact that he chooses to follow his own ideals rather than vote along party lines makes him respectable. Even sweeter, he beat them at their little game last time he was elected, humiliating them in the process.

Sure, he's still a stinking liberal, but we always like to see the rebel beat the system, and he slaughtered the system when he basically went alone and beat them anyway.

He’s out of the Democratic caucus even if he doesn’t speak if they have more than 51 other Democrats in the Senate. They no longer need him and they are the party of punishment.

Lieberman could have easily caucused with the Republicans and kept his chairmanship with them being in the majority. I cannot understand why he did not do this, after the Democrats turned against him? It would have made these past couple of years for Bush a lot easier if the Republicans had the majority vote in the Senate.

Think of Joe as being a useful idiot for our side. He'll help position the Republican Party as being able to "reach across party lines", like the "maverick" McCain does, and like Obama is promising to do.

It's fodder for the dupes that believe that sort of crap is possible in the modern world, where our culture and our political system is fighting for its life against the REAL worst threat our country has ever faced, the modern Democrat (Stalinist) Party.

The left versus right dynamic is being replaced with a left versus center versus right.

The left doesn't like Joe because he is a centrist and the right doesn't like McCain because he is centrist.

You can define the democratic centrists as those who are members of the DLC or third wayers. And the left calls the DLC the republican wing of the democratic party.

You can define the republican centrists as members of the Main Street Republicans or compassionate conservatives. And the right calls them the Kennedy wing of the GOP.

In the 04 dem primary it was Dean(left) versus Kerry(centrist).
In the 08 dem primary it was Obama(left) versus Hillary(centrist)

The DLC think tank is called the Progressive Policy Institute.

good grief, LIEBERMAN IS the radical left!

He is “conservative” on one single issue, and that is the war!

Ted Kennedy and LIEberman vote identical on every other subject!

His appearances on Hannity’s radio are lulling people to sleep!

Would it have? It wouldn't have changed the Republican party leadership, and I'm none to impressed with that. They would have continued making concessions to the left because the split was so close - unlike the Democrats, who took total control with no concessions with their 1 man majority. We'd have just seen more 'fairness' from the Republicans, and bending over backward to accommodate the Democrats.

Are we still dwelling on the 2000 election race. The Rats took it to court and lost, but yet they still consider it stolen. Your boy clinton raped “literally”, and pillaged this country for 8 years, and the American public weren’t going to allow his hor Gore to do it for the next 4, and you pussies are still whining, yes whining about it 8 years later. Get over it Rats, we’re over the rapist clinton, you’ll get over the last 2 losses. The creme de la creme will be if a weak McCain can beat the “magic negro”. That will be delightful!!!

He should just go ahead and switch caucuses then - let them see what it is like over on the Democrat side to pull a Jeffords - let’s see if they say things along the lines that it is a disenfranchisement of the voters who “elected a Democrat Senate.”

What’s interesting is that as far as actual members of the party, the Democrats have 49 seats. The two seats that give them the majority are “Independent Democrat” Lieberman and the Socialist Sanders of Vermont that are in their caucus.

Lieberman is another Maverick.

I like him because of that, but I don’t like ours. lol

However, should the Mav need my vote in OR, I will hold my nose and do just that.

Otherwise, I’m voting for Rick and Bubba, who had four votes in the primary here. ;o)

I’ve missed your posts.

But, then...I haven’t been here much lately.
I’ve had other “doings” going on.
Maybe I simply missed them because of my absence.
