GOP runs right or stumbles

It was said of the restored Bourbon monarchs of France after the French Revolution, “They have learned nothing and forgotten nothing.” The same can be said of today’s Republican congressional leadership.

Many Republicans hoped that after losing their majority in the 2006 debacle, the congressional leadership would put together a reform agenda that would emphasize core conservative principles to recapture its majority. Yet those hopes have been dashed as lately it has been more of the same and voters have continued to punish Republicans with devastating defeats. It would appear that things will have to get worse before they get better.

In 2006, voters rejected the Republican brand - not conservative ideals. America remains a right-of-center nation. Indeed the greatest Democratic successes in 2006 were when they ran candidates who seemed more conservative than their Republican opponents. The same pattern has been seen this year.

Which conservative principles?

Strong economic policies that stress less government, lower taxes and the entrepreneurial spirit of the individual; a strong national defense; enforcement of immigration laws; and a willingness to fight environmentalists to allow drilling on American soil.

A majority of Americans believe in a strong defense not only to win the war on terror but against emerging dangers ranging from a resurgent Russia to Iran to Venezuela.

How many candidates have lost elections due to being weak on national defense? Time and again, voters reject candidates who advocate appeasement. The Democratic Party is still the party of defeatism and weakness.

In polling, illegal immigration is a major concern regardless of party affiliation. Voters want tough laws against illegal immigration and no amnesty

Its difficult to get timid Republicans to pick up the ball and run with it even when the Democrats keep dropping it. That's what is so frustrating during this election year.

I don't know how many times this party has to go thru this charade, almost every time it goes to the middle it loses. Staying conservative should always be the course, not because it wins more often, which it does anyways, but because it's the RIGHT course!

No matter if John McCain wins, we still lose our conservative direction and probably congress for at least another decade.

“GOP runs right or stumbles”

Whenever the line between left and right gets blurry, the Repubs deservedly lose.

I would argue that its the Independant voters who get fooled into buying into the blue Dog Dem scam. Though the countless blunders of the GOP makes the trick easy to succumb to. The small govt Republicans on the other hand, after having seen the fiscal insanity of the GOP and Bush, refused to bend over anymore and stayed home.
