UK: Immigrants to be forced to show they can speak English to gain citizenship

Immigrants will be forced to show they can speak English and understand the British way of life before they can gain citizenship in future.

Under proposals to be put before Parliament next week, new arrivals will also be required to contribute to a fund to be spent on lessening the impact of sudden mass immigration on local public services.

Ministers are keen that recent arrivals prove they can integrate into general British life, rather than just their own close community, before they are allowed to apply for a British passport.

They are concerned that many young women in particular arrive from abroad to marry and never leave their new family or establish roots in the wider community before being granted citizenship.

In future, as well as showing they are continue to improve their capacity in English, those wishing to make the UK their home will have to prove they will not be a drain on the benefits system and can "give something back to the community".

Under one of the most radical proposals contained in the Draft Immigration Bill, published on Monday, an effective ``immigrant tax" is proposed to help pay for the schools and hospitals they use.

The special levy on entering the country is designed to respond to concerns that high immigration levels can lead to a drain on public services in communities which lack the funds to support a large influx from abroad.

MPs in some parts of the country had complained that local services such as schools and hospitals in their constituency were at "breaking point" as a result of a sudden swelling of the population.

An additional levy of around £20 will be added to the usual £200 visa need by those wishing to stay in Britain longer than six months.

“I agree. It’s odd to me that a requirement for citizenship is that one be conversant in English. One must be a citizen to vote. Then why are our ballots printed in over fifty languages? One other thing. Should I have to speak another language to communicate with a fellow citizen?”

When you no longer have a common language the cohesiveness of the country begins to fall apart - as we are seeing in the U.S..

I don't know what it will take before we do pass a law for what used to be obvious - ONE LENGUAGE - ENGLISH!

Remember the Loas guy that Jeffrey Dahlmer took home? The kid realized he was in trouble and actually escaped - stark naked. Someone called the police and the police came. He couldn't speak English. He was terrified out of his mind. He did manage to tell them where he had been. They contacted Jeffrey and he collected him and returned him to his apartment. The officers though nothing of it - two gays having a disagreement ... and laughed. Later than night he killed him.

Can you imagine the terror this kid went through? Not being able to speak ENGLISH, killed his chance to stop this freak from killing him. Even THAT didn't help people to see the need to LEARN ENGLISH.

When Jeffrey was eventually caught ... they found this boys remains - his skull.

“In the early morning hours of May 30, 1991, 14-year-old Konerak Sinthasomphone (the younger brother of the boy whom Dahmer had molested) was discovered on the street, wandering naked and under heavy influence of drugs and bleeding from his rectum. Reports of the boy's injuries varied. Dahmer told police that Sinthasomphone was his 19-year-old boyfriend, and that they had an argument while drinking. Against the teenager's protests, police turned him over to Dahmer. They later reported smelling a strange scent but did not investigate it. It was later found to be bodies in the back of his room. Later that night, Dahmer killed and dismembered Sinthasomphone, keeping his skull as a souvenir.”

“John Balcerzak and Joseph Gabrish, the two police officers who returned Sinthasomphone to Dahmer, were fired from the Milwaukee Police Department after their actions were widely publicized, including an audiotape of the officers making homophobic statements to their dispatcher and cracking jokes about having reunited the “lovers”. The two officers appealed their termination and were reinstated with back pay. They were named officers of the year by the police union. Balcerzak would go on to be elected president of the Milwaukee Police Association in May 2005.[3][4]”

If this petrified boy had been able to speak ENGLISH, he would be alive today.

I'm not a homosexual sympathizer but this was gruesome. You cannot expect or demand that police or anyone else know all these languages. It's the other way around. When visitors come and can't speak English, I understand ... but this was not a boy that didn't live here.
