Iranian Early Warning Station, Anti-Air Base On Lebanese Peak
DEBKAfile ^ | July 12, 2008

Posted on 07/12/2008 7:45:29 PM PDT by Fennie

In the past few weeks, Hezbollah at the behest of Iran and Syria has commandeered the 7,800-foot Mt. Sannine, a strategic asset capable of determining the outcome of the next war, as DEBKA-Net Weekly 356 revealed.

Radar-guided missile positions and an early warning station have since been deployed on its summit, which are capable of monitoring and threatening US Sixth Fleet movements in the eastern Mediterranean and Israel Air Force flights.

This development was serious enough for Israeli defense minister Ehud Barak to repeat three times in as many days that the IDF is keeping a close watch on events in the northern front, especially the deepening ties between Syria and the Lebanese Hezbollah. Barak travels to Washington this week.

Mt. Sannine, which dominates the roads connecting Beirut and Damascus, is one of the most prized strategic assets in the region. It was fought over for years by Syria and Israel, both seeking to control this ideal vantage point for an early warning station to command the eastern Mediterranean, the northern half of Israel and the Damascus region.

Its takeover on behalf of Tehran places Israeli security at a grave disadvantage. This topic is expected to figure large in the talks French president Nicolas Sarkozy holds with visiting Syrian ruler Bashar Assad this week...

If memory serves, the first thing to get blasted in the 1991 Gulf War was Saddam's "early warning site" courtesy of our AH-64 Apache helicopters

And one USAF CH-53 Pavelow helicopter that led them to the target. I claim a (very) small piece of that system. I worked on the design for the terrian following radar (it's actually a multimode radar, derived from the one that was in the RF-4) Hopefully they've replaced it by now.

Good point,,,but,,,

From what I have learned about the War Powers Act,,,

Congress can vote,within 7 days,to over-ride the POTUS if

they do not agree,,,

Big >IF< the POTUS does pull the trigger,,,

Congress will not have time to vote to stop it,,,

It will be over in a day or two at the most,,,Game Over,,,

If he does it before the election it will surely affect the
outcome,,,and,,,

Oil prices,,,TOOO high already,,,

I guess I don't look at the politics as much as the

Well Aimed Back Shot...;0)

I hear ya, but you’re working with the presumption that Bush would be on point. He won’t be, it will be Isarael. We already have assets in theater, approved by congress mind you, to deal with immediate threats that may....let’s say...pop up.

I think it’ll be a little later than sooner, but things being pushed out too far is a bit risky (politically). I don’t think Bush gambles lol. A more stable ‘area’ would immediately send oil prices down...with a little Saudi help as well, I would think. It’s interesting for sure, because there’s strong calculated risks regarding timing...both ways.

And back to congress...the way I figure it’ll go down, congress won’t even need to call a meeting... All just guesses here.

I can't argue with that,,,

Maybe I tend to think of this like what I would do,,,but,,,

I keep goin’ back to the mods on the B-2s to carry the

M.O.P.s,,,

I keep goin’ back to the fact that Israel cannot carry the

bomb load to deliver the knock-out blow to 100? nuke sites,

And keep the Straits of Hormuz open,,,

This is all a big >IF< of course...
