I'm very saddened to learn of my friend, Tony Snow's passing from cancer, this morning. I've known Tony for more than two decades--since I was literally in junior high school, and he was an editorial writer for The Detroit News before it transformed into the Detroit Newsistan. At that time, the newspaper was actually worth reading, and under then-Editorial Page Editor Thomas Bray, Tony was a rising star as his deputy. Tony was not afraid to write very pro-Israel editorials in the face of rising Muslim and Arab whining in town.
My dad introduced me to Tony's writing in the paper. And I used to see Tony at Michigan Republican events, when I was a young teen, and, later, at political forums for high school students put on by my Congressman, at which he spoke. In those days, it wasn't hip to be a young conservative and we conservatives stuck together, especially in the Detroit area.

I was glad to call Tony Snow, my friend. He will be missed greatly.
Tony Snow, Rest In Peace.
Amen!

My apologies. I will shut up now.
Please remove comment number two.
Hildy knew him, too!

I'll Fly Away
And specifically, Allison Krause/Gillian Welch's rendition.
The "comments" to that post are filled with the most vile and profane language imaginable.
Why in the world would you introduce that link on this thread?
This coming weekend, I’ll be in Lyons CO at Rocky Grass. Jerry Douglas who played with Kraus, will be there and I expect to hear this song. Thanks for the link.
My very first bluegrass event in CA starred Elizabeth Cotton. I sat there mesmerized by her.
Tony Snow (RIP) was cool. That’s a hard one for liberals to wrap their heads around. They’ve been under the impression that people like Al Franken, Jeanine Garafalo, Whoopi Goldberg, Bill Maher and David Gregory are cool (kewl) when nothing could be further from the truth. It’s up to them to decide who they think is “cool” but as for me, I’ll take the high road every time e.g. Ray Charles and Miles Davis were cool whereas Eminem and 50 Cent are not.
I was checking the comments and noticed one saying "All the more noteworthy in view of the disgraceful piece in the AP studded with cheap shots at this fine man".
I never saw the AP column. I am seeing very little AP stuff, now, it seems. LOLOL.
I think that is true for a lot of people, especially young ones. I wonder if they realize how much clout they lost.
Probably the most amazing live blue grass I expereinced was at, of all places, Bonner Springs KS. Bela Fleck, Jerry Douglas, Sam Bush, and Mark Schatz. We sat on a blanket in the front. Two plus hours of incredible music! Sam Bush will also be there at Rocky Grass as will Tony Treischa (sp?) and Edgar Meyer. My son’s playing upright bass with Adrienne Young.
Thanks for posting this, goldstategop.
Congratulations! How wonderful. :)
My family and are a 5-part vocal harmony (and everyone plays instruments). Some of the most fun for harmonic vocals is Bluegrass.
Somewhere, I know my grandchildren will love bluegrass too, considering my daughters and I would lullabye them with a 3-part to "Go To Sleep Little Baby".
Tony was such a happy, uplifted man in life, as he no doubts is in death, "I'll Fly Away" seemed the greatest, and most keenly (and musically) expressed sentiment, my subconscious located in tribute to him.
Soar, Tony, Soar!
Lyrics to Fly Away is safely tucked away with my will as are the lyrics to this song and it’s arrangement by Chris Tomlin.
I love this for Tony also.
My chains are gone, I’ve been set free.

“My sons playing upright bass with Adrienne Young.”
The very same Adrian Young who played naked on the drums with No Doubt?...If so, I’ve no doubts whatever that he’s even cooler now since the break-up of that band, IMHO.
Nope, this is a lady who sings songs about sustainable agriculture. LOL
Loving freedom in life is preparation for loving freedom in death. It's all of a piece. That rendition by Chris Tomlin was beautiful. And how thoughtful of you to include your favorites with your will, Mercat.
I think my loved ones might appreciate hearing Down In the River to Pray at my pre-wake.
When my children were little, they thought He resided in my kitchen cupboards; as they'd hear me invoke Him, asking Him for His patience, courage, and stamina. As they got older, they thought He resided in my garden, for that is where they saw me having conversations with Him. They knew for sure He was in the car with us, as whenever an ambulance or firetruck would pass, I would pray aloud. They saw me talking with Him behind the backs of my friends, for them. They felt His presence at church.
And a la William F. Buckley, they prayed to be in prayer at all times, anywhere. To be Immersed in Him at all times: This, was William F. Buckley's prayer.
For thos who might be unaware, I’d also like to point out the Mr. Snow was also a Freeper, who would actually respond to comments in threads during his radio program. He always seemed like a genuinely nice Christian man, even when you disagreed with him.
Everyone has their thoughts about Tony Snow and how they saw him intermittently over the years, not giving much thought to losing him too soon as we now have sadly experienced.
I saw Tony as an exemplary human being. Simple?
Not by a long shot - it is one difficult role to master especially in our complicated world, and to be human with panache as Tony could manage, made me believe he awoke to each day by planting a large kiss on the world, reviewing with a smile the people he would touch during his day, and his eagerness to share and exchange information, thoughts and desire to make our lives more understandable and loving with care and concern.
If we could only learn to be like him - how wonderful our lives would be - and those of our loved ones. The nearness of him and his wonderful voice must have been magical.
A bit of silliness here but my first thought this morning was a goofy impression of Tony and Tim Russert sitting at a table in heaven going at it! The angels are blessed.
Sorry to read that Fox News did this...
