Rove: ‘I’d Pick Romney’ as McCain’s Running Mate
FOXNews.com ^ | June 15, 2008 | Staff

Posted on 07/13/2008 1:11:30 PM PDT by BarnacleCenturion

Mitt Romney is best suited to run as John McCain’s vice president in the general election, former presidential strategist Karl Rove said Sunday.

“Romney is already vetted by the media, strong executive experience both in business and in government, has an interesting story to tell with saving the U.S. Olympics, and also helps McCain deal with the economy, because he can speak with the economy with a fluency that McCain doesn’t have,” Rove told “Fox News Sunday.”

But Rove, a FOX News analyst, added that Romney is not without flaws.

“He’s been a little uneven in his performance,” Rove said. “This is the guy who talked about environments and marching with Martin Luther King and so forth. And there’s also the Mormon problem, which was really sort of astonishing to me.”

......another RINO.

Romney was for Civil Unions before he was against them, that’s the only way he could be elected in Taxachusetts.

McCain might be too jealous of Romney to pick him. From trivial to general criteria, Romney is far more qualified to be POTUS than McCain. Romney is presidential looking, speaks well, is not creepy, is able to answer questions, appears healthy and energetic, has no adultery or other scandals in his background, is not as fanatical about amnesty and Mexicans as McCain, understands economics, etc.

I live in Michigan......unemployment is seven and a half percent.....homes that were on the market for a half million five years ago today can’t get three hundred thousand.

There is no chance whatsoever that McCain can carry Michigan....I don’t care what the polls say.....Many Repubicans I know have switched to the Constitution Party or the Libertarians......McCain is considered a sell-out.

McCain/Feingold
Gang of 14
and most of all.......he is Captain Amnesty.

Forget carrying Michigan.

We are so screwed.

I was so grateful that we've had George Bush over Al Gore and John Kerry the past 8 years. I expect I'll just reflect on the thought (at least until the DNC convention) that they won't have to suffer through a "President Hillary".

Romney made a politically fatal mistake in the primary. He ran negative adds against McCain—especially in describing McCain as favoring an “amnesty bill” when the actual legislation did not support that description.

IMHO chances are 60/40 at least that it will be Governor Pawlenty. Pawlenty has been elected and governs a blue state and has kept his conservativism intact. Pawlenty is a member of the largest mega church in Minnesota (an Evangelical one)and his pastor is Leith Anderson who is President of the American Evangelical Association. Pawlenty is governor of a state that almost, but not quite voted for GWB; in this Minnesota is similar to Wisconsin and Iowa. This troika seems vulnerable to McCain and Pawlenty and might be the crucial determinants in the electoral college.

One can also note, that Pawlenty was loyal and was co-chairman of the McCain campaign. Senator McCain believes and actualizes loyalty and Pawlenty hanging in there when things were bleak is a plus.

Senator McCain's psychology IMHO besides prizing loyalty prizes excellence. If McCain falters in any way he could not pick a smarter and more able man than Pawlenty. When you begin a military mission, the first task is to select and prepare for the dire eventuality you don't make it. Senator McCain has shortcomings, is old and a poor reader of the teleprompter but he is a proven, consistent servant of the US of A. He would rather pick the right person and lose than the wrong person and win.

“McCain’s NOT going to pick anyone who might upstage him. IMHO, that leaves Romney out.”

McCain needs someone who’d upstage him, but in a diplomatic, respective manner. He will not be the most impressive candidate of recent years once this thing really kicks off after the conventions. He needs help.

Pawlenty and Crist do nothing for me. Maybe others like them, and Jindal might not want to hitch his wagon to McCain so soon after being elected Governor of La. Seems he should serve in that office more than a few months before aiming higher.

Gore creeped me out. Kerry I've known for my entire adult life as a serious fraud. Bush 43 is a far superior man to either of those two.

I have been fearful of a President Hillary for years now, and apparently she is now out of the picture. I cannot believe our good fortune to have this Obama rookie as the Democrat candidate.

Unfortunately, McCain is pretty bad. I don't think that Romney or anybody will be able to help him. Every time that he (McCain) speaks he seems to me even more incompetent.

But McCain is far more phonier - the worst of the GOP candidates. Have you listened to McCain - his response to the Viagra question? Pathetic. He appears medicated. He gets confused and forget where he is at. Romney at least does not need Lieberman to give him the answers.

I read up on him in the fall of 1996 after I heard Rudy talk with pride of his help of illegals. I believe his conversions are sincere. I also believe that he has lead a good, moral life, and the fact that he is Mormon does not bother me. It sure didn’t bother people who voted for his father. I think he probably did game the system with the pro abortion stuff running in MASS. He is very very very smart, and you don’t raise five good kids who never got into trouble without being a good man and dad (and sometimes you can’t do it if you are).
He did get an award from right to life while governor, and had a B grade from the NRA.
He can be really silly, and stretch the truth like lots of guys do. He is a politician, and considering that in my mind he is right up top. Good politicians always have their flaws. If he is on the ticket I will vote for McCain.

“He ran negative adds against McCain—especially in describing McCain as favoring an “amnesty bill” when the actual legislation did not support that description.”

I doubt that was a fatal mistake for Romney. It was and is an amnesty bill, which 70% or more of Republicans oppose. McCain won by Super Tuesday with barely 40% of the votes cast through that day. He won because the non-McCain vote was split among four or five candidates who were viable and had significant support at various times.

Both Huckabee and Thompson helped McCain by pulling votes from Romney at various times.

I would like to see McCain look elsewhere, and have a Romney Jindal head to head in 2012 if McCain loses.

Mitt should take that time to become “known” among grassroots Conservatives, IMO Romney/McCain in 2008 is not a good ticket..

Mitt is not a rino

Yes he is.

Mitt Romney espouses and defends his liberal views

"The choice to have an abortion is a deeply personal one. Women should be free to choose based on their own beliefs, not the government's."

- "Romney's campaign distributed pro-gay rights campaign literature during Boston's ‘Gay Pride' events," issuing pink fliers stating, "Mitt and Kerry [running mate Kerry Healey] wish you a great Pride weekend! All citizens deserve equal rights, regardless of their sexual preference."

- Romney advocated governmental recognition of homosexual adoption rights, domestic partnerships and homosexual civil unions.

- Romney opposed the Boy Scouts' policy prohibiting homosexuals from serving as scoutmasters and prevented the organization from participating publicly in the 2002 Olympics.

- The Boston Globe wrote in 2005, "Governor Mitt Romney, who touts his conservative credentials to out-of-state Republicans, has passed over GOP lawyers for three-quarters of the 36 judicial vacancies he has faced, instead tapping registered Democrats or independents - including two gay lawyers who have supported expanded same-sex rights."

- Romney promoted homosexual propaganda in Massachusetts schools through the "Governor's Commission on Gay and Lesbian Youth," funding this bureaucracy of social engineering instead of eliminating it.
