WASHINGTON The White House says President Bush is planning to lift an executive ban on offshore oil drilling. In a Rose Garden statement on Monday, the president plans to lift the ban. But by itself, the move will not lead to more drilling off America's coastline.
Congress must still lift its own legislative ban before offshore drilling can happen.
White House press secretary Dana Perino says Bush is acting now in hopes of spurring Congress to act. So far, lawmakers have shown no interest in doing so.

The first executive order was issued by Bush 41, then extended by Clinton and Bush 43, until this flip-flop.
Since the GOP willingly allows the DNC to define Republicans as evil Oil swindlers, there is no surprise the Bush 41 and 43 went along with this self defeating policy. Too late now, the rats run the ship.

"This could have been done, what, seven years ago???" As someone in the energy industry I would say seven years ago the indusrty was depressd with super low crude oil prices. It would have hurt more than help all the people in the industry and their families. Massive lay offs back then already.
Now the time is right.

“I dont think any drilling can take place unless Congress also lifts the ban.”
That’s the beauty of this move. Congress called him on the Executive Order when President Bush called for drilling offshore. Now he is placing the ball squarely in Congress’ court. The public will not see Congress, even more, as an obstacle to lower fuel prices. Congress now has to “put up or shut up” on offshore drilling.
President Bush is backing Reid and Pelosi into a corner and with their 9% approval rating, it’s not going to be pretty.

35 years ago when the Saudi's were holding us hostage at the gas pump!
It is a good move, but all part of the political theater both parties put on for elections. Screw these bastards on both sides of the aisle. We need to replace them all with leaders and not reactionaries only interested in their own political butts.

To: lormand
It would have been nice if he had done this while he had a majority in the House and Senate. Government is so backasswards. So this means that even if the Congress had passed legislation to drill, it would have been impossible anyway because of the exeutive ban. I wonder why the MSM never mentioned this little detail.

The article stated legislative bans would need to be lifted as well, however, this is a big step in the right direction. Finally some real action other than just talk. Now, the sniveling, cowardly republican congressman and reps need to grow some backbone and attack the legislative bans rather than playing the role of dim lapdogs.

Might as well open up the coal in Utah that Clinton closed off for his Indonesian campaign-donatin' buddies also.

This is great but the skeptic in me doesn’t think that Congress will feel any more pressure to act than they already do. After all, each MOC (Member of Congress) knows that while the group’s approval rating is 9%, their own individual standing is not an issue. Therein, I think that they know that their grandstanding and obstructionism only hurts McCain and not themselves.

"Should have been done in 2001, like on Jan 23, 2001. Or even on September 12, 2001." Bush 43 is reversing his own order which extended the ban until 2012.
This illustrates the folly of allowing yourself to be defined as a puppet of the oil companies. You would think that a former oil businessman turned president would bring more oil independence to our nation, but no, the opposite has happened.
