Texas students join a nationwide movement for the right to bear arms while at college

BLANCO — Cameron Schober, a 22-year-old Texas State University student, aimed his semi-automatic pistol at the outline of a man's torso just as a gust of wind blew down the target.

"Everybody hold up!" hollered instructor Mike Cox. As six other shooters lowered their weapons, Schober scrambled to brace the cardboard target at a makeshift range on a deserted Hill Country ranch.

Schober and fellow student Bill Downs were among 13 people who recently completed Cox's shooting proficiency and eight-hour classroom course, prerequisites to obtaining a license to legally carry a concealed handgun in Texas.

But even if the two follow through with fingerprints, notarized forms and $140 checks for Texas Department of Public Safety processing, they won't be able to bring their weapons to campus unless the Legislature changes the law.

Schober and Downs are part of a nationwide movement that's pushing for the right to carry pistols on college and university campuses in the wake of the April 2007 massacre at Virginia Tech University.

College students are also part of a record wave of Texans applying for concealed gun licenses this year. Applications for first-time licenses and renewals were up 24 percent during the first five months of 2008 compared with the same period in 2007.

Schober said he wants to be able to protect himself from a gunman like the one who killed 32 students at Virginia Tech.

"School's not a safe place anymore," Schober said. "How horrible would that be to have to sit under a desk and wait for the cops to come."

Michael Guzman, president of Students for Concealed Carry on Campus at Texas State, said he believes more students would apply for licenses if...

I support this. But,,, on an unfortunate note,,,, We had a cop killed one town over on Saturday night. “Routine” traffic stop. The perp shot the officer 4 times in the head. The thing is,,,, the perp had a CCW! This sad fact will be used against us!

While I may have missed it (I doubt it), I don’t see CCW mentioned in the WTTE nor the Plain Dealer story.

Very little detail. I am withholding judgment until I hear the defense.

It is very strange for the officer to stop a car without letting dispatch know about it.

Everything is likely to come out at the trial.

You've been pinged because of your interest in Students for Concealed Carry on Campus and the ongoing mission to remove the double standard of concealed carry between college campuses and city sidewalks.

We're having a conference August 1 at the National Press Club in DC, if anyone in the area (or out of it) is interested. I will be attending.

You missed it!
“Thompson, a licensed practical nurse for the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services, according to his attorney, had a concealed-carry gun permit.”

Some additional info on the Twinsburg incident:

"I posted this because it has been reported in the media the the suspect had a Conceal Carry Permit, but what is not being reported is the fact that it was revoked as has been reported by 19 Action News."

There’s still a lot of news breaking on this tragedy. Because the investigation is still underway, only bits and pieces are coming out. I wonder what the PD will say about the revoked status of the perp’s CCW. I haven’t read the PD in 15 years, so I’ll have to find out second hand.

Yeah I never read it when I lived there either.

And, there you have it: he didn’t have a permit. I’m shocked the media would out print false information.

The cruiser was an older model equipped with an inoperable camera.

Too bad as it would have helped immensely to find out how everything went down.

Let us hope that it was inoperable before the incident, and was not rendered inoperable *after the fact*.

Does anyone remember Nixon, Ms. Woods, and several minutes of tape?
