Barack Obama's Christian Journey
Newsweek excerpted on Townhall (Hugh Hewitt) ^ | July 15, 2008 | Posted by Duane R. Patterson

Posted on 07/15/2008 6:52:47 AM PDT by Hugin

The July 1st cover story in Newsweek details the pathway of Barack Obama's journey to faith. You can read the story here. Included in this story are audio clips of Barack Obama describing part of this journey. The audio is very noisy and hard to make out, as the plane is in mid-flight. Below is a transcript of the two passages for your perusal.

"It wasn't an epiphany. You know, a bolt of lightning didn't strike me and Sunday, I said, "A-ha!" It was a more gradual process of...maybe that traced back to those times that I had spent in New York wandering, you know, the streets or reading books, or where I decided that the meaning I found in my life, the values that were most important to me, the sense of wonder that I had, the sense of tragedy that I had, that all these things were captured in the Christian story, and that...that, that, also that community of faith was one that suited me."

"It's a precept of my Christian faith that my redemption comes through Christ. But I'm also a big believer in the Golden Rule, which I think is an essential pillar not only of my faith, but of my values and my ideals and my experience here on Earth. And I'm also a believer, as part of my faith, that I am a limited being, with limited understanding. And so I operate on the basis of, I operate knowing what I know for myself, but not presuming that I know everything, certainly not enough for me to condemn others, or to presume that their path is wrong."

As Hugh pointed out on his radio show, wouldn't the vast majority of Christians simply be able to say, "Because I believe it's true"? Nothing here about a personal relationship with Christ, accepting him as his savior, redemption. Not to mention that about 100 "um"s and "ah"s were cut out as Obama tried to think of words that would sound credible without actually offending anyone. It's all about "I"; what Obama thought, felt, and a nice story that "suited me".

For the sake of disclosure, I am not a Christian, but I know a lot of "commited Christians", and this guy doesn't sound like any I know.

The entire concept of “Barack Obama’s Christian Journey” is some PR agent's constructed story to try to stop America from considering him a Muslim.

In addition, what real Christian would listen to Rev. Wright's have for more than ten minutes before they got up and left?

If this is his testimony, it sounds weak and unoffensive to me. Christ Himself told us the Gospel offends people. A statement of CHristian faith should be bold, mention that 1) I am a sinner 2)I am saved by grace alone through Jesus Christ. Believing with the mind is not salvation - the Bible says even Satan believes, and trembles.

Salvation requires having the belief, then acting on it personally. The sinner has to repent and to ask Christ into their life to save them personally. That is the moment of salvation. A lot of Christians will remember the exact moment this happened for them, some don’t.

Any true CHristian who is honest about their faith will not talk about universalism, or all roads lead to salvation. The Bible is very clear that Christ is the only way to the Father and heaven. If this were not so, why would God Himself have taken on our form and died a death by torture to free us?? If all roads are equally valid, then Christs sacrifice was meaningless. God does not do meaningless things, particularly the agony of the cross.

Sorry, long answer to a short question

When Jeremiah Wright said that Muslims were the people Jesus was going to reveal Himself to after his death, there was no more need to listen to his statements. His church was being taught error for years and it proved they never read their Bible with any faith, they just followed what was taught.

That entire church is apostate.

Oh, he doesn’t have to be Muslim to be dangerous.

Just the fact that he (Obama) is a black-supremacist, white-hating, communist-cultist makes it bad enough.

No Christian would. But a self absorbed, America hating, marxist tool would feel quite at home.

There are a number of things that are telling in his 'testimony'.

where I decided that the meaning I found in my life...all these things were captured in the Christian story, and ... also that community of faith was one that suited me."

There is not one ounce of humility in any of that. There is no reference to the person of Christ. There is only Obama and the things the Chrisitan "story" had in common with him.

This guy would have to recite the Nicene Creed with his fingers crossed behind his back.

I don't think he's a closet Muslim, I don't even know if he really buys all this Black Liberation Theology bilge. He most likely just got into Wright's church in order to score political points and enhance his street cred, since he's half white and half African and not really "African-American" in the usual sense.

I think he just worships Barack Obama.

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

So far I have seen no evidence of humility in Obama, his wife or any of the people he has turned to such as Jeremiah Wright. In short, I don’t think Obama would recognize humility if he saw it in someone else and I can’t imagine he has ever felt truly humble, he may have been humiliated at some time but that is a different matter entirely.

Absolutely insincere. These are not the words of a man who knows God. Gradual process... maybe? NOT!

what if you're a bad Christian that keeps falling back and sinning? I can remember when I was awakened to Christ but it just showed me how absolutely bad I've been and am even now.

I feel happy that I can see a purpose, it's just that I find myself to be the "bad" example. So I can't really fault a guy that believes is God/Christ and is a bad Christian.

I don't want Obamalamadingdong to be President...or McCain, but if he say's he's a Christian and acts like a crappy Christian, well.... I'm there as well. I think I'll just hate his politics and leave his religion out of it.

There's enough bad stuff in marxist/liberals to insure you a warm spot in the afterlife.
