I'M EVICTING MYSELF; RANGEL TO QUIT ONE OF HIS 4 BARGAIN APTS. (Dodd redux--Dem got R/E breaks)
NY POST ^ | DAPHNE RETTER, Post Correspondent

Posted on 07/15/2008 7:03:57 AM PDT by Liz

Rep. Charles Rangel said he will give up one of four rent-stabilized apartments that are supposed to be used as primary residences and for which Rangel paid about half of market rate for more than a decade. A moving truck may not be enough to protect Rangel from the legal repercussions of his longtime discount, according to Ken Boehm of the National Legal and Policy Center, which filed an FEC complaint. Rangel's years of low rent constituted an illegal corporate campaign contribution from building owner, the Olnick Organization. Rangel could face investigation by the House Ethics Committee. Rangel is worth $566,000-$1.2 million, according to disclosure forms, and shelled out just under $4,000 a month for the units. FEC records show his campaign committees accepted $4,500 in campaign contributions from the building's owner, Sylvia Olnick, since 2004.

Rangel has legal problems if as it was reported by Mark Levin that one of the rent-controlled apartments was being used as a campaign headquarters, in direct violation of the rent control law.

I bet that is the one he is 'evicting' himself out of.

So does Charlie have three mistresses - or four - stashed around town in these low-cost pads? In Manhattan, where your average Joe can’t evemn afford a one bedroom walk-up. Rangel has always struck me as oilier than Chevron. I hope this is his comeuppance.

Probably the one he used as an office, which is a clear violation of state law regarding use of rent-controlled spaces. The other three have been remodeled into one penthouse apartment.

“Rangel’s years of low rent constituted an illegal corporate campaign contribution.” SWEET! Of course, it’s too much to hope for jail time for both Rangel and the contributor since they’re DemocRATs, and only Republicans are accountable.

I thought they could use the premise of the Southwest airlines for the fight against the democrats...Want to pay more taxes? With democratic leadership that’ll be thousands of dollars, want gasoline at the pumps that’ll be atleast 5.00 a gallon with democrat leadership - you get the idea. Hello? Unfortuantely given the district he serves, the only way he will no longer be in Congress, is if he is indited and found guilty of a felony.

Even at that he might not get sacked.

Little-Known But Exploited Loophole Allows Politicians To Drive, Maintain Expensive Cars, SUVs On Taxpayer Money.

Rep. Charles Rangel: ‘My Constituents Appreciate It’.

You may not realize it, but members of the House of Representatives can lease a car and have it paid for by you — the taxpayer. And it’s not just the car, but gas, registration, insurance … the works.

Flood the House Ethics Committee with letters and phone calls. Rules aren’t just for Republicans! Hold Rangel accountable (and Jefferson, and all the other criminals in the 110th). Here’s who to contact:
Committee on Standards of Official Conduct, HT-2 The Capitol, Washington, DC 20515, Tele# 202-225-7103, fax: 202-225-7392.

Either he *directly* lied on the form, or is able to keep most of his net worth in hands of family or otherwise off the books.

I married a fellow who lived in the same NYC apartment building as I did. The following month I sent the landlord two checks from my account to pay the rent for each apartment.

Landlord's reaction: he posted eviction notices on both apartment doors.

After sending him 'proof of marriage' we were allowed to keep one of the apartments.

Nah . . . but I was a thorn in the landlord's side. He owned many building and had no personal contact with the tenants. He was trying to co-op our building. To do so he had to have a certain number of empty apartments. He had to get rid of tenants, so we experienced a lack of services: no heat, no hot water, broken washers and dryers, broken lobby windows, etc.

There was a fire in the elevator one day. So we had no elevator service for 4 months. The tenants put chairs out on each landing for resting but two elderly tenants died during those 4 months. Once we had service restored, the landlord tried, unsuccessfully, to tack the cost of the new elevator onto the rents as a "major capital imporvement".

I took pictures and made complaints . . . even testified against him in court once. I got a rent reduction.

He was very happy when I retired and moved to Florida.

This was the view from my bedroom window:

I was asked the same question in court. But they quickly took me off the stand once I mentioned my elderly mother also lived in the same building.

I loved my apartment! I had an ocean view from every room of my 2 bedroom apartment in Rockaway Beach - hands down the best area of New York City. Plus, I could walk to work and came home for lunch.

I was also an officer in the tenants' association which I helped form. We had a lot of very elderly people living in the building who weren't able to move. Someone had to stand up for them.

Rockaway Beach is bizarre in that Lindsey decided to dump welfare families on prime beachfront property in the eastern part of the Rockaway peninsula. What a waste!

Western part of the peninsula is still cool. Love the Brazilian girls who seem to congregate on Beach 116th (I think).

When I was a kid we'd hop on a bus to go shopping or to the movies in Far Rockaway. But, yeah, once the projects were built, we stayed to the west end.

I remember when they ripped down my grandmother's bungalow to make way for 'urban renewal' and the entire area sat vacant for a quarter of a century.

I'm happy that they've begun rebuilding at Arverne by the Sea.

Nice View. Much better than the one from my apartment windows, especially during the winter months. I live in Central New York State, and compared to other cities, my rent is very cheap, and none of that crap that goes on in New York City.
