Although GilmoreÕs campaign gave local Republican leaders only a day's notice of his intention to visit Heathsville, "On short notice, we didn't have a bad turn-out," Northumberland County GOP chairman Jeanne Kling said.

About a dozen GOP stalwarts, including Lee Ann Washington, who ran unsuccessfully against Albert Pollard for the House of Delegates in February, were at the Republican tent at the market to greet Gilmore.

Gilmore had intended to stay in Heathsville only about a half an hour before going to Tappahannock's RivahFest, Kling said, but he wound up staying about an hour and a half.

As Governor, Jim Gilmore enacted and signed into legislation five different tax cuts including a 70 percent cut of the infamous car tax by $1.1 billion the largest tax cut in Virginia history and left office with a state surplus of over a billion dollars. Jim Gilmore is now running for the Senate Seat of retiring Senator John Warner. He is running against former Governor Mark Warner, a liberal Democrat, who broke campaign pledges not to raise taxes and cut spending and fought the Virginia Marriage Amendment. Governor Warner squandered the billion surplus left by Governor Gilmore and raised taxes by 1.4 billion dollars over and above that.
