Governor should lead by example
Anchorage Daily News ^ | July 15,2008 | Doug Lyon

Posted on 07/15/2008 12:18:13 PM PDT by AlaskaErik

I read where Gov. Palin was involved in a traffic accident on Tuesday. I'm glad to hear everyone was OK. I am sure I'm not the only one wondering why, during our current energy crisis, she was commuting from Wasilla to Anchorage alone in the state's gas-guzzling Chevrolet Suburban. As she stated recently that her energy team is "working on a long term plan to promote conservation and lasting solutions" to our current crisis, she might consider setting the example by traveling in something that gets better than 15 mpg.

Our governor travels to and from work in a state owned Chevy Suburban. The commute is about 45 miles one-way and there is also the possibility of hitting moose. She does not have a trooper escort or anyone else with her, which means all the state is paying for is the cost of gas and wear and tear. When she flies, it's coach, even though past governors were given a courtesy upgrade to first class.

How does the governor from your state get back and forth to work? Big limo? Sedan? Does he/she have a driver and/or police protection? Private jet for official travel?

Mine walks. His office about 50 yards from his bedroom. And there are underground walkways.

Maybe she’s like me?

I don’t try to conserve anything, because I’m tired of people lying about a manufactured crisis.

Dear Doug-here’s a quarter call someone who cares.
But seriously-I wouldn’t be suprised if her Suburban gets closer to 20 mpg (on rural roads). Besides-any woman as hot as your gov. needs to be safely wrapped in a huge urban assault vehicle.

The OK Governor has bodyguards, driver’s, takes a State owned jet plane places and has the body guards bring him McDonald’s to the Mansion. He is driven to the Capitol a few blocks away by a driver. Gov Sleeps a Lot who doesn’t like meetings before noon walk to work? Like never. OK has SUV’s for their elected officials. Believe the Governor’s wife and two girls who live in Shawnee also have drivers and body guards but not sure.

Ours uses his own private plane.

“My” governor is Kitty Kat Sebellius of Kansas. I’m quite sure she travels around in a guilded, horse-drawn carriage with at least 4 footmen and 6 white horses. (I’m hoping she won’t be my governor after the next election.)

My governor flies to work from his home in Southern California, but not to worry, he pays carbon credits for the privilege, so that makes it OK.

Not a bit elitist. After all he is a rich member of the Kennedy family and a movie star, so he belongs to two protected high income, do-no-wrong, smarter-than-everyone-else, classes.

She needs to move closer at least during the time she is governor. I can’t believe they let her drive 45 miles by herself. Any other state and I think the state police would go ballistic if a governor did that even once.

Dougie, you must be a douche-bag among douche-bags to complain about her gas consumption when she is obviously saving the tax payers of Alaska money in amounts of hundreds of thousands. Doesn’t Alaska have a governor’s mansion?

Mine uses a State Policeman driver in a Cadillac Escalade. He also has a female assistant ride in the back with him. Of course for longer/time sensitive meetings he uses a State Police helicopter.

My Governor cruises in a coupe de-ville with a State Trooper driving. Recently it was rumored that he was looking into the State getting him a lear-jet.

O’Mally in Maryland has an armed State Trooper chauffer him wherever he goes; another chauffers his wife; and a third chauffers his kids. All vehicles are new Ford Sedans, V-8, all the amenities.

Sen Stevens drives his own car, a conservative four-door mid-size sedan. The Gov is familiar with trucks and trailers, boats, snow machines, all that gear. Whatever you are comfortable with, that’s what you drive if you have a choice.

Gov. Palin also often walks to and from work when the Legislature is in session. The Gov’s house is about 4 blocks from the Capitol offices. Her commute from Wasilla and Anchorage is between her home and the Anchorage Office. She has a large family - 5 kids? What size car do you suggest she drive with 5 kids.

In Juneau, which would be a heck of a commute to Anchorage.

The Gov. of California commutes over 700 mi./day in a Gulfstream Jet, but he lectures about how we must reduce our use of fossil fuels.

And trust me, I've got a whole list of people I'd rather see walking to our Governor's office.

Leighow said Palin's vehicle sustained some damage but was drivable, and the governor continued on to work. Palin was wearing a seat belt, and the air bag did not deploy. Leighow said the governor told her she was grateful she was driving a large vehicle. Shawn Brown, 29, of Wasilla, the driver of the Econoline van that smashed into the back of Palin's SUV...

When a Ford Econoline hits you, you are glad you have a big SUV. If she had been driving a smaller car, who know how serious the accident would have been?

Seeing as she’s one of the few friends any conservative has left, I would have her drive the BIGGEST, SAFEST, GAS-GUZZLINGEST SUV made! She’ll live longer in the evnt of another accident. Thank god she was driving the Suburban!

Gas is $4.40 a gallon in Anchorage. 90 mile round trip @ 15 mpg = $26.40 per round trip.

Buy the Governor a $25,000 Toyota Prius that gets 45 mpg on the highway and the round trip will cost $8.80.

Difference of $17.60 per day.

Number of daily trips to make up the difference in gas expense for the cost of the new Prius?

1420....

She has a nice house in Wasilla. Why would she want to live in a sh*thole like Anchorage? And yes, there is a governor's mansion, but it's down in Juneau. Why we haven't moved our capitol up north is beyond me. Southcentral Alaska has most of the state's population and is much more centrally located. Juneau is like Cheyenne, only much harder to get to. If we had better access to our elected official maybe we wouldn't have had as much corruption as we have had.

I remember a couple of months ago, there was a little story about her walking to work with the kids and they came across a couple of bears down an embankment or something. She took some pictures with her cellphone. It was just a one of those funny little back of the newspaper stories. But of course, the complainers left comments... “Child endangerment!” A lot of complainers.

Possibly, but I've heard some speculation that she has too much 'baggage' to be selected as VP.

I'm doing whatever I can to make sure Obama isn't elected, so maybe Kitty Kat will be history whether he selects her or not.

Wow, yes, quite a commute. Forgive my ignorance. Seems they got 100 flavors of confused there. I can't see why they haven't moved the capitol. It seems as though they already have, unofficially.

Moving the capital is an issue every year. They got so far as to stake out a new capital in Willow a couple decades ago. State offices are distributed in Juneau, Fairbanks, and Anchorage, so effectively the capital is everywhere.
