Iowa Senator Tom Harkin, in his bid for a fifth term, still holds a 16-point lead over Republican challenger Christopher Reed.

The latest Rasmussen Reports telephone survey of Iowa voters finds Harkin ahead 52% to 36%. When “leaners” are included, the incumbent leads 55% to 37%.

Last month, Harkin led his challenger 53% to 37%. The Democrat is currently chairman of the Senate Committee on Agriculture, Nutrition, and Forestry, a key position for a farming state like Iowa.

I thought that Commie Tommy would be leading by a wider margin than this. However, don’t look for it to narrow, unless Reed has a personal fortune he’s willing to spend. I think Republicans have written this race off. Too bad.

This is another race where Republicans should at least beat the living crap out of Harkin even if they can’t win. Harkin is such that he should lose. Like Rockefeller, like Durbin, if the opponents had enough money they could make those races much closer. Republicans are going to have to learn to fight the ground war in places where they should win and against incumbents that are atrocious like Durbin.

Reed needs to go whole hog on the energy issue and back Harkin into a corner and show the voters his true colors.

That is where you are wrong. These battles should be fought. Iowa should be fertile ground. Someone like Harkin should’ve been sent to the woodshed a long time ago.

And yet we continue to let these folks have the first and most influential primary (caucus).

Maybe the idiots that keep putting this traitor in office can stuff corn in the fuel tanks of those combines. They're not going to get any relief at the pump from the Sandinista Senator or his French buddy Jean F'in Kerry.

When Steve King gave this contest a pass, the race was over.

The people of Iowa are deluded fools for giving this destructive charlatan the Senate seat.

Nope, I suggest that Reed enlist the expertise of Rush Limbaugh on how to defeat whore Harkin.

For one thing, Reed (hint, hint): IT'S THE ENERGY CRISIS, STOOOPID!!!!!

Iowa is a rural farm state that has been decimated with flooding. People are trying to get on their feet and their som-bitch senator carries the flag of no drilling, no nothing. If Reed can't beat Harkin this year, all the water in Iowa needs to be checked for dem koolaide.

These are pathetic numbers for Harkin. He should be much farther ahead than this. Reed doesn't have to spend a dime and he'll get at least 40% of the vote.

Harkin is vulnerable. Reed needs money.

Actually, i am not so disappointed in these poll numbers. I think if this guy Reed plays his cards right and hammers away at Harkin’s stand on energy and uselessness of the ethanol debacle, he can beat him.

I suspect if substantial candidates like Lightfoot and Ganske could not beat Harkin in years in which Republicans were gaining Senate seats elsewhere, then he will win again. Pretty pathetic. Shows how low we have sunk too when guys like Harkin and Durbin can just waltz right back into office.

They were establishment guys with lots of money, but nothing to say. Terrible candidates. At least Reed believes in something.

Agreed. I’m not predicting a Reed win but I believe that he could win but his money is extremely tight. If he got a reaxsonable amount, it’s doable.

The thing that changes is that Harkin just keeps getting more extreme and with higher disapproval numbers. He is an embarassment.
