Tom Bates seeks third term

Berkeley Mayor Tom Bates announced his candidacy for a third term Monday on the steps of city hall surrounded by five other council members who are endorsing him.

His challengers so far include former Berkeley Mayor Shirley Dean and activist Zachary Running Wolf.

Bates cited his record on fighting global warming, creating a "green economy," getting homeless people off the streets and supporting development near public transportation centers.

He is endorsed by council members Gordon Wozniak, Linda Maio, Laurie Capitelli, Darryl Moore and Max Anderson.

Bates served one four-year term and is finishing a special two-year term created to bring the mayoral election cycle in line with the presidential elections.

Bates' support of the peace activist group Code Pink earlier this year in its fight to get the Marines to leave their Berkeley recruiting station drew national outrage and a move by some Republican congressmen to pull federal funding from the city. But Bates is not worried that will hurt him in the election.

Dean, who was mayor from 1994 to 2002 and a councilwoman from 1975 to 1982 and again from 1986 to 1994, said she has "had enough" with Bates as mayor and plans to "point out problems with his record."

"I think what we have is a disengaged mayor who has not been accessible, who has not been proactive and who has not been standing up for Berkeley," Dean said.

I don't know that Dean would be a better mayor than Bates.

Move America Forward, Gathering of Eagles, Free Republic and other activist groups have been battling in Berkeley for many months to keep them from dishonoring our Troops and the Marine Recruiting Office and Bates has sided with the terrorist supporting groups such as code pink and World Can't Wait etc.

All of the candidates are probably of the same political stripe, since this is Berkeley.

Running Wolf is a tree sitter who ran in 2008 also.

Bates beat Dean in 2002, and she is running again.

I doubt the policies of the city will change no matter who wins.

The only thing that has had an impact on Berkeley and their un-American antics is the rallies put on by and/or attended by GOE, MAF, Free Republic and Rolling Thunder.

Code pink has been outnumbered many times in the past.

Also rumors abound here in California that San Francisco and Berkley are exporting their illegal aliens criminals to San Bernardino County. Actually driving them down there. San Francisco made the news, but local rumor says Berkley has the same or similar policy.

they want to be a sanctuary city without the illegals. Go figure.

Now that is interesting.

For years bums (PC title: homeless) have been flocking to SF because of their catering to their wants (not needs) with big welfare bucks and offers of wireless and even laptops. Oh, and shopping carts!
