New Polling Shows Sauerberg within Striking Distance of Durbin

Durbin Barely over 50% in Ballot Test against Sauerberg

(Lombard, IL) – The campaign of U.S. Senate nominee Steve Sauerberg, MD, today released new polling on his race against long-time incumbent Senator Dick Durbin. “This polling confirms what we have long believed,” said Christopher Hage, Sauerberg’s Campaign Manager. “No amount of money from Washington special interest groups will be able to change Dick Durbin’s disastrous 25- year record in D.C.”

The polling, conducted by Southern Outreach, an Atlanta-based firm, shows Durbin struggling to break 50% in the uninformed ballot match-up against Sauerberg. In a head to head with Dr. Sauerberg, Durbin leads 52% to 35%. Outside of the Chicago-metro area, Durbin fails to garner 50% and only leads Sauerberg 47% to 40%.

“Senator Durbin is a household name in Illinois with an $8 million war chest and is the second- ranking member of the United States Senate,” continued Hage. “The fact that he starts this campaign barely over 50% is a sign of real weakness.”

The automated poll of more than 1,500 likely voters was conducted on Saturday, July 12th.; 53% of respondents were Democrats, 35% were Republicans, and 12% were unaffiliated voters.

In addition to showing a tighter -than -expected race, the poll also revealed that Dr. Sauerberg has tremendous opportunity for growth. Almost 60% of respondents did not know enough about Dr. Sauerberg to form a favorable or unfavorable opinion of him. “Clearly our campaign has a real opportunity to close the gap with Durbin,” said Hage. “We are confident that as more people hear about Dr. Sauerberg’s prescription for change, that our numbers will continue to improve.”

“If Dick Durbin was hoping for a free pass this November, he was sadly mistaken. This campaign is just beginning, and we intend on giving Dick Durbin all he can handle,” concluded Hage.

“If I read this to you and did not tell you that it was an FBI agent describing what Americans had done to prisoners in their control, you would most certainly believe this must have been done by Nazis, Soviets in their gulags, or some mad regime - Pol Pot or others - that had no concern for human beings. Sadly, that is not the case.”

This is good news but without the money to force the issue any opportunity will be lost to unseat Durbin.

Hussein Obama was elected on the same night in 2004 that W was reelected. That means that if McCain beats him in November, Obamanation will be up for reelection to the Senate in 2010.

Sen. Obama was elected to the U.S. Senate in 2004. If he wins the presidential election, our governor, Rod Blagojevich, a liberal Democrat, will appoint a replacement.

I'd like to see Dick Durbin lose but Illinois is just too Dem. Chicago always comes in last and that's Durbin's home territory.

No, Turbin's from downstate. He just has drifed more and more to the left since he got elected to the Senate after he left the House.

I've explained (and provided proof) to Maelstorm on numerous occasions that Sauerberg is a David Souter-type stealth RINO who has ZERO chance of "beating Durbin", yet he never replies to my posts and continues to post this garbage anyway.

I'm guessing he's probably on Sauerberg's payroll or a staffer at IL GOP Inc. trying to get conservatives to funnel their hard earned money to this useless RINO loser instead of giving it to a conservative candidate in a tight race.

That's unfortunate, but I'm not going to waste my time with Maelstorm anymore. He has unmasked himself as the new FairOpinion of FR and will probably get purged by JimRob one of these days when he goes too far. In the meantime, I'll just repost what I already said about this race and let freepers look at the evidence for themselves. Eventually Maelstorm will have vanity "Sauerberg is the man" threads with nobody posting on them but him.

Last week’s Rasmussen poll said that Durbin is ahead, 61%-27%. How do you which poll is more accurate?

I have an unfavorable opinion of Sauerberg precisely BECAUSE I don't know enough about where he stands. I met Sauerberg in person twice (once at the Stickney Township GOP meeting and once at the Cook County GOP salute to Dennis Hastert), and he comes across as a nice enough guy. The problem is Sauerberg has never run for office before and "his people" who run his campaign seem hell-bent on making sure he avoids committing to any conservative issue. It speaks volumes that conservative voters have been asking since Oct. 2007 what forms of abortion Dr. Sauerberg feels should be prohibited by law and the only type he'll commit to banning is partial-birth abortion (which is already banned and 90% of the public agrees with that)

There is not one noteworthy conservative in a high position of power on Sauerberg's campaign, his whole staff is "moderate" GOP insiders who want to govern as Durbin-lite.

The poll is probably a "push poll" done by someone hired by the campaign to phrase questions in a way that will convince the voter to respond that they lean Sauerberg over Durbin. We did something simular when I was working on Dr. Kathuria's failed 2004 U.S. Senate primary bid and he kept insisting he wanted to get into the debates but he didn't do enough campaigning to prove he was a viable primary candidate. He decided to hire some pollster to create poll questions that would give the impression he was favored by Republican voters. I warned him the comission on debates would never accept his own polling firm data as legit proof that he's viable, and I was right.

STEVE SAUERBERG ON THE ISSUES

PRO-GUN CONTROL

Andy Martin calls his opponent, "Gun control Sauerberg"
[Primary challenger Andy] Martin noted that that after he challenged Sauerberg on Sauerberg's plan for more gun control, Sauerberg did not deny the accusation. "It was surreal", says Martin. 'I got up in front of a bunch of gun owners and told them Sauerberg wanted ‘a little' more gun control and Sauerberg did not deny the accusation".

Sauerberg: "I Have Qualms..." about overturning Roe v. Wade.

This past week, on the anniversary of the Roe decision the Republican Candidates for the U.S. Senate all attended a forum sponsored by the Illinois Family Institute, which has made audio from the event available. Be sure to listen to Steve Sauerberg talk about his "qualms" about overturning Roe, and Andy Martin's defense of the status quo, and hear Mike Psak be the only candidate to come out in favor of not only overturning Roe, but also cutting off federal funding for any organization that provides abortion services.
I was right the first time. There is only one truly pro-life candidate for the U.S. Senate in Illinois: Mike Psak.

ACTIVIST JUDGES
PRIMARY CAMPIAGN INTERVIEW -
Jeff Berkowitz: As a senator, you are going to have a choice in confirmation of judges. Would you have a litmus test? Would it matter to you whether the judge [wannabe] wanted to overturn Roe v. Wade or the judge [wannabe] supported Roe v. Wade?
Dr. Steve Sauerberg: I don’t think it is appropriate to have a litmus test
Jeff Berkowitz: Including that. So, you could see yourself—
Dr. Steve Sauerberg: Including that. That’s just not appropriate. That’s not the way judges should be chosen.
Jeff Berkowitz: So, you could see yourself confirming for the Supreme Court a judge who is AVOWEDLY pro-Choice?
Dr. Steve Sauerberg: It could happen.

Conservatives steam over Sauerberg staffer IL GOP candidate for U.S. Senate Steve Sauerberg stunned social conservatives last week when he announced the addition of a HOMOSEXUAL RIGHTS ACTIVIST AS HIS CAMPAIGN’S NEW PRESS SECRETARY. Christopher Barron, 36, was the point man for the Log Cabin Republicans in their 2004 campaign against President George W. Bush's effort to add a federal marriage protection amendment to the U.S. Constitution.
After discussion about the revelation broke out last week on Illinois Review (see "Sauerberg: Personnel is Policy"), state pro-family leaders -- including talk show host Sandy Rios and national activist Peter LaBarbera -- voiced outrage Monday on the air over Sauerberg's apparent political snub.
"It is inconceivable that Steve Sauerberg would so needlessly alienate the pro-family conservative base in Illinois by hiring a veteran homosexual activist for his campaign," said Peter LaBarbera, founder of Republicans For Family Values (www.rffv.org).
Within weeks of President Bush's amendment announcement in 2004, Barron and the Log Cabin Republicans launched its first ever $1 million ad campaign criticizing the president's effort and ultimately withheld endorsing Bush in his 2004 presidential re-election bid.
The LCR ad was designed to embarrass Bush by purposely pitting the President's position in support of the marriage amendment directly against his VP Dick Cheney's 2000 debate comments.
LCR protest ads ran in home states of Republicans who sponsored the effort in Congress. As the group's political director, Barron was quoted widely in the national media during the heat of the federal marriage debate.
In a May 11, 2004 Rocky Mountain News story, Sauerberg's now-press secretary Barron told reporter Peggy Lowe about the LCRs' determination to make two Colorado lawmakers "regret" their federal efforts to protect traditional marriage

PRO-TREE HUGGING WITH TAXPAYER'S MONEY

• Fully fund federal programs geared toward protecting our environment.
• Increase fuel economy standards on cars and trucks.
• Enhance our nation's rail capacity. Trains are the most efficient means of transporting large amounts of manufactured goods, and the railroad industry has a proven safety record. In fact, trains are three times more fuel efficient than over-the-road trucks.

Maelstrom doesn’t reply to many posts in any event. He posts on a lot of Senate candidates, not exclusively Sauerberg, so if he is on the latter’s payroll, it’d make no sense for him to bother with posting about other candidacies. But who knows ?

Maybe he’s on the payroll of the NRSC, who knows? They’ve pumped a ton of money into the campaigns of RINOs losers at the expensive of good conservative candidates.
