CINCINNATI (Reuters) - Republican presidential hopeful John McCain praised Democrat Barack Obama on Wednesday in a speech to black leaders and outlined what he called honest differences with Obama over taxes, spending and education.
"I am a candidate for president who seeks your vote and hopes to earn it," he told the NAACP, the country's oldest civil rights organization and one of its most influential. "But whether or not I win your support, I need your goodwill and counsel. And should I succeed, I'll need it all the more."
Indeed, McCain told the NAACP that he thinks highly of Obama, who would be the first black U.S. president.
"Don't tell him I said this, but he's an impressive fellow in many ways," McCain said to applause from the crowd.

Bending over for votes he will never get anyway! I wish republicans would learn from the vast history of mistakes made trying to garner votes from those who WILL NEVER VOTE FOR A REPUBLICAN>...
No fool like an old fool!!! (I oughta know!!!)
“he told the NAACP, the country’s oldest civil rights organization.....”
FALSE, the NRA is, by far, the oldest.
I guess W’s tenure didn’t teach him anything. These RINO’s and their insistance on being nice guys to the enemy have ruined the party.
I said here and so many others said it, as well. Next up: my friends, please vote for Obama, and please consider me as your second choice.
sheeesh.... what a candidate.. why bother pandering the the NAACP... go there, yep, good idea.. but praise for Obama? better start fighting, Mr McCain.
> “Don’t tell him I said this, but he’s an impressive fellow in many ways,” McCain said to applause from the crowd.”
What McCain actually meant: “I’m impressed with Obama’s stupidity. To think that I tied him in a recent polls...”
John has hoof in mouth disease, when it comes to folks on the left side of the isle. At various times he has defended Kerry, Clinton, the Democrat party at large, and now Obama.
There’s nothing like taking a guy with no qualifications, and then pumping him up in front of those who already thought he had them.
As you said, he’ll never get the NAACP vote. Millions of non NAACP folks will read these remarks and say to themselves, see, even the Republican candidate thinks Obama is a statesman.
It’s a huge mistake to build up the guy you are running against, and McCain did it here. Anything else he said will be forgotten in deference to this “important” statement.

What is interesting is the following excerpt
"...McCain's warm comments showed there was no point in bashing the most popular politician in the African-American community. A poll published on Wednesday by The New York Times and CBS News said more than 80 percent of black voters said they had a favorable opinion of Obama.
And a poll this week from the Quinnipiac University said Obama led McCain among black voters 94 percent to 1 percent.
McCain accepted an invitation to speak to the NAACP this year after not appearing last July, a decision he said was due to the near-collapse of his campaign, which prompted him to launch a shake-up.
"As you might recall, I was a bit distracted at the time dealing with what reporters uncharitably described as an implosion in my campaign," he said.
The crowd gave him a warm reception although some questioned him skeptically over education and the federal response to the recent Midwestern floods when he took audience questions after his speech.
He might not be popular with the African-Americans but he is respected. Sometimes, in a campaign, the most you can achieve by preaching to those already determined to vote otherwise is to reduce the animosity and energy level of your political opponents.
As usual, Senator McCain is miles ahead of his detractors on the best way to deal with political differences.
LOL! The press gaggle would then be seen lightly clapping, and later spin McCain's remarks as disparaging to Cynthia McKinney. McCain would follow up with a sincere apology.
Why is McCain doing this?? 92% of them won’t vote for a white guy over a black anyway.
Of course, Obama isn’t really “black” but if the Press says so.....
McCain is pro-life. Obama is pro-choice.
McCain supports school choice vouchers for inner city minority kids. Obama opposes them.
McCain is pro-military. Obama wants a civilian defense force.
McCain and Obama both support the death penalty for child-rapists.
McCain and Obama both support the Supreme Court’s Heller decision.
McCain is winning 1% of the Black vote. Obama is winning 94%.
Didn’t President Bush win 12% to 18% of the Black vote?!
[Indeed, McCain told the NAACP that he thinks highly of Obama, who would be the first black U.S. president.
“Don’t tell him I said this, but he’s an impressive fellow in many ways,” McCain said to applause from the crowd.]
Great, just great. Oh how I hate it that I have to vote for McCain. Lord, give me strength.
McWuss
McCain is lucky to be winning 1%.
When even J.C. Watts is waffling over his vote, it's lights out for any Republican getting any of the black vote.
One wonders why McCain even bothered to address the NAA(L)CP. Pandering to blacks won't get him one additional vote in November.
Where’s the pic of that Star Trek character sighing and putting his head in his hands?
Why is he even bothering running? He should just hand it over now and not waste all that campaign money. Save for the 2012 races.
Well that’s nice. When he loses this November, he can say “At least the NAACP respected me”.
I don’t know why you are on this thread with this, but a hearing impaired person can usually hear noises, but it is difficult to distinguish words. Especially in a speaker.
I am a big fan of J.C. Watts, but his comments here lead me to think the guy is proof of something I was saying earlier in the day.
His comments: (note Armstrong Willians and Colin Powell mentioned)

My comments earlier today:
http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/news/2046423/posts?page=35#35
I had contemplated making some comments about no matter how Conservative some Blacks seem to be, there still seems to be this unbreakable bond with the victim/savior mindset.
J. C., we don’t cater to Blacks specifically, because we consider them to be our equals. We expect them to realize that when we make statements, they apply to them and the Whites who are listening.
Do you really want us to think of you as someone who needs to be catered to specifically? Doesn’t that imply subservience? Don’t you want the same things Whites do?
This is where folks like this lose me.
It’s why I think it’s a mistake to cater to ethnically pure interest groups, whether white or another race.
Support good strong bread and butter policies. Let the people decide if those policies will help them or not.
Skin color is a dead issue for me.
Hold rallies. Let whoever wants to come. Explain how your policies are more sound for the family and the nation.
Let the chips fall where they will.
McCain, dumber than a box of rocks. No way will I ever vote for a schlub this stupid.
The GOP needs to replace this loser at the convention asap.
How silly. Not a person he pandered to today will respect or like him. And that is from the other party.
He has yet to pander to his own party. This A hole deserves to lose for being a really stupid person.
Or maybe he really wants Barry to win. Could be.
I hope as a conservative, you realize that you “have to do nothing”. How sad, you sound like a beaten down liberal.
Vintage McCain. Build up the Marxists, socialists and liberals while tearing down conservatives.
Can't wait to see how it works out for this two-faced weasel...
Same here. And then I sometimes think perhaps I can wait. LOL
You take care.
Senator McCain received a standing ovation at the end of his comments.
He made me proud of him for his gracious comments.
There was no harm to anyone by his demeanor or speech and IMHO, much gained.
Much more.
Sooner or later, we will find out. There won't be any place safe enough to hide for those responsible.
Horses patooties. He gained nothing, and bolstered Obama. Glad you are proud. Maybe that pride will make you FEEL better in November.
The other day I made a joke on this site that McCocaine would endorse Obomba at the convention,I guess he couldn’t wait to extend his hand across the aisle to his good democrat friend Obomba and give him his personal endorsement during his historical run for the presidency! It really appears that the McCocaine campaign strategy is to lay down and be a nice door mat so his pals in the media won’t get upset during the hallowed one’s coronation and call him a racist for daring to try to run a winning campaign.
McCain is the only thing in between obama and the White House. What is your plan to keep Obama out of the White House?
My plan is to make Obama leave the race. McCain too.
“People with class do not cultivate rudeness and name calling as a means of political discourse.”
You’re joking? McCain is the queen of rude, but usually just to conservatives. Or shall we just all collectively ignore history?
Capitol Hill staffers rate their bosses. McCain got no glory from those who work with him.
Every election year we survey top aides on both sides of the aisleadministrative assistants, press secretaries, legislative directors, and chiefs of committee staffsto get their up-close and personal, and anonymous, views. While there may be lots of partisan backbiting among congress members, their staffers seem far more capable of putting politics aside and making honest judgments. It wasnt unusual for aides in both parties to name one of their own as spineless or give the workhorse nod to someone across the aisle.

THE McCAIN WAY - ATTACK REPUBLICANS
.Defending His Amnesty Bill, Presidential hopeful John McCain - who has been dogged for years by questions about his volcanic temper - erupted in an angry, profanity-laced tirade at a fellow Republican senator, sources told The Post yesterday. In a heated dispute over immigration-law overhaul, McCain screamed, F you! at Texas Sen. John Cornyn, who had been raising concerns about the legislation. This is chickensstuff, McCain snapped at Cornyn, according to several people in the room off the Senate floor Thursday. Youve always been against this bill, and youre just trying to derail it. (Charles Hurt, Raising McCain, New York Post, 5/19/07)
In 2000, Sen. McCain Ran An Attack Ad Comparing Then-Gov. George W. Bush To Bill Clinton. SEN. MCCAIN: I guess it was bound to happen. Governor Bushs campaign is getting desperate, with a negative ad about me. The fact is, Ill use the surplus money to fix Social Security, cut your taxes and pay down the debt. Governor Bush uses all of the surplus for tax cuts, with not one new penny for Social Security or the debt. His ad twists the truth like Clinton. Were all pretty tired of that. As president, Ill be conservative and always tell you the truth. No matter what. (McCain 2000, Campaign Ad, 2/9/00; www.youtube.com/watch?v=UHoXkCprdL4)
Sen. McCain Repeatedly Called Sen. Pete Domenici (R-NM) nams. Why cant McCain win the votes of his own colleagues? To explain, a Republican senator tells this story: at a GOP meeting last fall, McCain erupted out of the blue at the respected Budget Committee chairman, Pete Domenici, saying, Only an ahole would put together a budget like this. Offended, Domenici stood up and gave a dignified, restrained speech about how in all his years in the Senate, through many heated debates, no one had ever called him that. Another senator might have taken the moment to check his temper. But McCain went on: I wouldnt call you an ahole unless you really were an ahole. The Republican senator witnessing the scene had considered supporting McCain for president, but changed his mind. I decided, the senator told Newsweek, I didnt want this guy anywhere near a trigger. (Evan Thomas, et al., Senator Hothead, Newsweek, 2/21/00)
Sen. McCain Had A Heated Exchange With Sen. Charles Grassley (R-IA) And Called Him A F*cking Jerk. Senators are not used to having their intelligence or integrity challenged by another senator. Are you calling me stupid? Sen. Chuck Grassley once inquired during a debate with McCain over the fate of the Vietnam MIAs, according to a source who was present. No, replied McCain, Im calling you a fing jerk! (Evan Thomas, et al., Senator Hothead, Newsweek, 2/21/00)
In 1995, Sen. McCain Had A Scuffle With 92-Year-Old Sen. Strom Thurmond (R-SC) On The Senate Floor. In January 1995, McCain was midway through an opening statement at a Senate Armed Services Committee hearing when chairman Strom Thurmond asked, Is the senator about through? McCain glared at Thurmond, thanked him for his courtesy (translation: buzz off), and continued on. McCain later confronted Thurmond on the Senate floor. A scuffle ensued, and the two didnt part friends. (Harry Jaffe, Senator Hothead, The Washingtonian, 2/97)
Sen. McCain Attacked Christian Leaders And Republicans In A Blistering Speech During The 2000 Campaign. MCCAIN: Unfortunately, Governor Bush is a Pat Robertson Republican who will lose to Al Gore. The political tactics of division and slander are not our values They are corrupting influences on religion and politics, and those who practice them in the name of religion or in the name of the Republican Party or in the name of America shame our faith, our party and our country. Neither party should be defined by pandering to the outer reaches of American politics and the agents of intolerance, whether they be Louis Farrakhan or Al Sharpton on the left, or Pat Robertson or Jerry Falwell on the right. (Sen. John McCain, Remarks, Virginia Beach, VA, 2/28/00)
Celebrating His First Senate Election In 1986, Sen. McCain Screamed At And Harassed A Young Volunteer. It was election night 1986, John McCain had just been elected to the U.S. Senate for the first time. Even so, he was not in a good mood. McCain was yelling at the top of his lungs and poking the chest of a young volunteer who had set up a lectern that was too tall for the 5-foot-9 politician to be seen to advantage, according to a witness to the outburst. Here this poor guy is thinking he has done a good job, and he gets a new butt ripped because McCain didnt look good on television, Jon Hinz told a reporter Thursday. At the time, Hinz was executive director of the Arizona Republican Party. There were an awful lot of people in the room, Hinz recalled. Youd have to stick cotton in your ears not to hear it. He (McCain) was screaming at him, and he was red in the face. (Kris Mayes and Charles Kelly, Stories Surface On Senators Demeanor, The Arizona Republic, 11/5/99)
Sen. McCain Publicly Abused Senator Richard Shelby (R-AL). [McCain] noted his propensity for passion but insisted that he doesnt insult anybody or fly off the handle or anything like that. This is, quite simply, hogwash. McCain often insults people and flies off the handle . There have been the many times McCain has called reporters liars and idiots when they have had the audacity to ask him unpleasant, but pertinent, questions. (Editorial, Theres Something About McCain, The Austin American-Statesman, 1/24/07)
There’s more!
I hope that works out for you. I REALLY do.
I am glad you do. Best thing for you too.
I guess you really don’t like Senator McCain. He surely does have his faults.
I did not think your description of McCain using a negative add approach to President Bush was really a negative add.
People who become POTUS, undoubtedly, have big egos or else they would never try out for the job.
"Those in attendance" would have had more respect for him if he'd just talked about himself.
Why is McCain called a conservative? His amnesty and campaign finance reform are anything but conservative.
He has STUPID written all over himself. His mind is locked in the 1970s or 80s. Somebody should tell him Czechoslovakia broke up some 15 years ago. He still has not mastered the use of email. He would have a touch time on "Are You Smarter than a 5th Grader."
President Ford made one slip that might have cost him the election. McCain has made a huge number of them and worse ones.
The point here isn’t to win votes with this particular minority group. That clearly isn’t going to happen with a black man opposing McCain. The point is to not allow the media to label him a racist by skipping the thing. This matters when it comes to independent and Democratic white voters, constituencies McCain needs support from to win. He doesn’t have the conservative support to gin up turnout like Bush did in 2004. He needs crossover votes from true independents and the ever shrinking conservative Democrats. He needs to look like a reasonable alternative to people whose votes are truly up for grabs and are skittish about turning the reins over to an empty suit leftist like Obama.
I don’t disagree at all with what he said. I support breaking the teachers unions. I support vouchers and merit pay. I also believe in testing and making schools and teachers responsible for the results.

If you don’t know why I or anyone is on the thread...then simply ask.
There is no doubt that a person who is hard of hearing MAY ass the test to be able to drive a car, but to file suit because they have a problem at a place where most of us have a problem due to ambient noise of car’s, outside noises and kids in the car smacks more of trolling for dollars then a genuine concern as to whetehr or not a competant person can get their order at a drive through.
You have to be kidding me here.
I’m asking. Why are you posting about the hard of hearing lady in the drive thru on a “McCain praises Obama at NAACP” thread.
It just seemed odd to see it here.
I would agree with you if it were simply a case of making a suit without trying to do something a normal person would find appropriate. If the woman had not gone to the window and requested to place an order, I would completely agree. But in this case, they actually told her to go back to the menu board or come inside. That is ridiculous. Some lawsuits are not for money, but for change. And some companies only know one way to make a logical change, when it hits their pocket book. As I said on the thread this came from, I’ve been asked to pull forward when I ordered at the board. Why couldn’t they take her order and ask her to pull up to service the other customers?
I learned this in the General Liability lawsuits I’ve been involved in. Some are just trolling for dollars, some are just to make the company aware they are screwing up big time.
Why did I reply on this thread??? Because I did so late at night in South Africa while traveling there not paying attention to what window I had I had open when I hit send!!
In other words I am goofy!
:)
