Myth of Consensus Explodes: APS Opens Debate On Global Warming

The American Physical Society, an organization representing nearly 10,000 physicists, has reversed its stance on climate change and is now proclaiming that many of its members disbelieve in human-induced global warming. The APS is also sponsoring public debate on the validity of global warming science. The leadership of the society had previously called the evidence for global warming "incontrovertible."
In a posting to the APS forum, editor Jeffrey Marquis explains...

The only problem is, Americans are too ignorant or apathetic to care or even pay attention.
If it gets any traction at all, it will have to go on Oprah, the View and Dr. Phil, or be mentioned in football beer commercials and NASCAR.

When I debate global warming, I remind the other person about the heat wave of June-July 1980, when many cities, including New York, Chicago, Philadelphia, Kansas City, and Detroit had record high temps. of 115-120 degrees. I tell the other person that I don’t remember any of those cities being hotter than 105 degrees, since then. I ask how we can have global warming now but not have global warming when we were warmer. I haven’t found anyone who can answer.
To: ebayhater
It’s significant to us...but to the entire generation of young adults and children who have been thoroughly brainwashed with this junk science I think it’s too little too late. It’s going to be awfully hard to put that toothpaste back in the tube.

Ha! Hot damn.
Science, after all, isn’t about consensus ... science isn’t democratic. Its about proof. Its about finding holes in your OWN theory, testing and re-testing each and every flaw, and either verifying your hypothesis, or refining it to match with the data.
Global warming has completely reversed the process — a theory was posited, voted on, and the “consensus” was accepted as truth without any verification whatsoever. No proof. No testing. No trial and error. Just a vote. That’s not science — that’s politics.

There are still people insisting that the Earth is flat, that is was created just 5000 years ago, and that we never made it to the moon.
The GW hoaxers claim that the science was "settled" was just an attempt at pure agitprop.

I predict that the argument will change from
“the evidence for global warming is incontrovertible”
to
“we don’t really know if there is a human influence or not, but its better to be on the safe side”
Which, of course, is bogus as well. More goalpost moving, but it will still be the same hoax.

I have lost much faith in integrity of science, and I have a degree in engineering. Same here. Scientists who work in the private sector can only get away with so much BS. But watch out for roving bands of scientists who make grandiose pronouncements --as in global cooling (circa 1977), global warming, nuclear power or evolutionary theory.

The days of total thought control via the MSM and the screaming idiots supporting the latest or oldest liberal lie are coming to an end.
Thanks to the internet, we can detect and prove the lies before the end of 24 hours and start posting that data.
It may take awhile, but eventually the truth will come out.
The liberals will label it Swiftboating, and we will just smile. We know that the Swiftboat Vets helped to derail Kerry, and many of us supported them. We know that Swiftboating stands for getting the truth out there inspite of the lying, spinning and thought controlling MSM.
A very large share of Americans are saying no to all forms of the liberal MSM. As a result the fishwraps and tv nets are having financial troubles that could force them out of business before and by the end of this decade.

This has been a long time coming. Perhaps we now have passed a tipping point on the Global Warming Hoax.
I have believed for a long time that allowing the publication of the scientific arguments on both sides of the AGW issue would result in a rejection of the Al Gore man-made global warming thesis. I think the Al Gore camp has also realized this and have, as a result, poured a major part of their propaganda campaign into the idea of a scientific consensus on the subject. That consensus never existed.
To: Always Right
I believe it is the result of specialization where no generalist survives the rigors of the ‘publish or perish’ plan and we end up with acceptance of conclusions rather than the time-tested evaluate, question model.

It’s obvious that since 2006, America has taken a heavy lurch to the Left. Don’t expect that to change in 2008. The media will see to that and already have. (The other media that is.)

I knew the tide had turned when advertising gurus *last year* were already warning that "green" was history as a marketing plan and were moving on to the next fad. Apparently, not everyone has gotten the message yet.
There will still be those pathetic losers who cling to this fad for another few years, but increasingly, society will come to view them as the cultural equivalent of people who still listen to Dexy's Midnight Runners.

For Kansas City the June-July record is 112 degrees.
To: wideminded
The 1980 United States heat wave was among the most devastating natural disasters in terms of deaths and destruction in U.S. history. The heat wave claimed at least 1,700 lives[1]. Also because of the massive drought, agricultural damage estimates neared US$44 billion (1998 dollars). It is among the billion-dollar weather disasters listed by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. In Dallas/Fort Worth, Texas, high temperatures exceeded 100°F a total of 69 times, including a record 42 consecutive days from June 23 to August 3. Dallas/Fort Worth reached an all-time high on June 26 and 27, soaring to 113°F (45°C) on both days. In the northern hemisphere summer of 1980 in Dallas/Fort Worth, there were 29 days that either tied or broke records for those respective dates. Wichita Falls, Texas would hit 117°F (48°C), the highest temperature ever recorded in that city to date.

You’re right. I was mistaken, in my first post, on this topic. I found a site which states:
“The 1980 United States heat wave was among the most devastating natural disasters in terms of deaths and destruction in U.S. history. The heat wave claimed at least 1,700 lives. Also, because of the massive drought, agricultural damage estimates neared $44 billion (1998 dollars). It is among the billion-dollar weather disasters listed by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.
A strong high pressure ridge in the central and southern United States allowed temperatures to soar to 90°F (32°C) almost every day from June to September. The drought was also caused for this particular reason.
In Kansas City, Missouri, the high temperature went below 90 only twice and soared above the century mark (100°F, 38°C) for 17 days straight. In Memphis, Tennessee, the temperature reached an all-time high of 108°F (42°C) on July 13, 1980, part of a 15-day stretch of temperatures above 100°F that lasted from July 6-20, 1980.”
Do you remember an American heatwave, that was worse than the 1980 heatwave, since then?
