Gore Wants U.S. to Abandon Fossil Fuels by 2018
New York Times ^ | July 18, 2008 | David Stout

Posted on 07/17/2008 10:09:38 AM PDT by reaganaut1

WASHINGTON — Former Vice President Al Gore said on Thursday that Americans must abandon fossil fuels within a decade and rely on the sun, the winds and other environmentally friendly sources of power, or risk losing their national security as well as their creature comforts.

“The survival of the United States of America as we know it is at risk,” Mr. Gore said in a speech to an energy conference here. He called for the kind of concerted national effort that enabled Americans to walk on the moon 39 years ago this month, just eight years after President John F. Kennedy famously embraced that goal.

Mr. Gore said the goal of producing all of the nation’s electricity from “renewable energy and truly clean, carbon-free sources” within 10 years is not some farfetched vision, although he said it would require fundamental changes in political thinking and personal expectations.

“This goal is achievable, affordable and transformative,” Mr. Gore said in remarks prepared for the conference. “It represents a challenge to all Americans, in every walk of life — to our political leaders, entrepreneurs, innovators, engineers, and to every citizen.”

Gore isn't nuts.

Haven't you experienced your rebirth in Obama? When the Obamessiah takes office, you can get in your car with no gas in the tank and whisper, reverently, "in the name of the Obama, the Michelle and the Algore, 'renewable energy,'" and your car will operate!

I’d like to think we can reach the goal, not by 2018, but by the end of 2008, to abandon anything to do with AlGore. Would be great to reach this goal earlier, say by the end of the day on July 17, 2008... but December 31, 2008 will suffice.

...it would require fundamental changes in political thinking and personal expectations.

Since taking steps to make his home more environmentally-friendly last June, Gore devours an average of 17,768 kWh per month – 1,638 kWh more energy per month than the year before the renovations. By comparison, the average American household consumes 11,040 kWh in an entire year, according to the Energy Information Administration. The cost of Gore’s electric bills over the past year topped $16,533. ,

Windpower is the greatest “boondoggle” ever created. Windmills only work when the wind is blowing and that is not guaranteed anywhere in the world so 70% of the time the electricity that they are supposed to be generating will have to come a FOSSIL FUEL BACKUP. The turbines only generate electricity when they are turning and cannot be stored.

You shouldn’t say “cannot” when discussing almost any technology. Wind power can easily be stored — at a cost. It’s a financial and economic problem, not a technological one. (I’m not saying it’s not a boondoggle.)

This man's stupidity and arrogance amazes me. What I cannot believe is how the MSM takes this lunatic seriously.

My favorite story about Al Gore concerns a comment about him from a Silicon Valley heavyweight. This was during the Clinton administration when he was VP. When a reporter was interviewing this Silicon Valley CEO he happened to mention that Gore was Clinton's point man on science and technology. To this the CEO replied (paraphrasing) ...”the average high school student in Sunnyvale knows more about science and technology than Al Gore”...

(Sunnyvale= a suburb of San Jose,CA)

Abandon fossil fuels by 2018.

A wonderful notion, it’s just not reflective of reality to the extreme.

Following Al Gores lead, I now declare that by 2020 we shall obtain 100% of all energy requirments from the (not yet invented) ‘Shipstone’ as described in Heinlien’s novel ‘Friday’
