(Libertarian Candidate Bob) Barr praises Gore’s work on climate change
The Hill ^ | 07/17/08 03:10 PM [ET] | Beth Sussman

Posted on 07/17/2008 5:48:20 PM PDT by Jean S

Libertarian presidential candidate Bob Barr praised Al Gore on Thursday for his commitment to addressing climate change and said he has met with the former vice president several times to discuss possible solutions.

In a speech Thursday at Constitution Hall in Washington, Gore said that he has also discussed climate change with presidential candidates Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) and Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill.).

Both McCain and Obama believe that action needs to be taken on global warming and have separately criticized the Bush administration for its approach on the issue.

Barr said he believes the most effective energy solution will be “market-based” and characterized by “free enterprise.”

“There obviously is a role for government,” Barr said. “There’s a role for private industry. There’s a role for nonprofits and certainly a role for the American people, individually and collectively.”

Barr, a former Republican congressman from Georgia, said it is time to recognize that global warming “is a very serious problem” and that it will get “dramatically worse” unless significant action is taken.

Gore attacked the energy solutions provided by President Bush, who lifted an executive ban on offshore oil drilling this week.

“It is only a truly dysfunctional system that would buy into the perverse logic that the short-term answer to high gasoline prices is drilling for more oil 10 years from now,” Gore said.

Scary stuff. He doesn't cite any proof but wants to take "significant action". What the hell does that mean?

Wow... even the Libertarian Party been taken over by communists.

Well, his statement does seem to contradict his earlier ones (e.g., with Glenn Beck in early June)...but I think that it's clear that he's not actually saying Anthropogenic Global Warming:

Global warming is a reality as most every organization that has studied the matter has concluded, whether conservative-leaning, liberal oriented or independent. I am, however, also aware that scientists differ on its causes, impact and remedies. I remain firmly committed to free market solutions and innovations to address this issue; not tax-driven policies.
I'm personally hoping for the Space Elevator.

I just don’t understand. The global warming bandwagon is being quickly evacuated by REAL scientists and the actual evidence that shows no warming is taking place. But, these politicos just can’t seem to help but grab hold of the foolishness! Are they posturing for the environmentalists, or is it just delusions on their part? I will be incensed beyond belief if we end up destroying our economy over this imaginary crisis, especially when solid evidence is now available on a widescale to refute it.

Proof the libertarians have lost their minds. Gore is an ecofascist (as is the entire green movement), and fascism in any form is incompatible with libertarian principles. Perhaps they should forget legalizing drugs, as it appears they’ve already had more than enough.

Anybody voting for Barr is wasting their vote on somebody no better than McCain on liberty, and worse than McCain on foreign policy.

That we have come to this, where the first 4 people you pick from the white pages are as likely to be competent Presidents as the current crop, and a sizable portion of the population, including everyone currently running for President, has, literally, lost the ability to distinguish between good and evil....this is all testimony as to why Madeline Murray Ohare ended up in little pieces.

Wow... even the Libertarian Party been taken over by communists.

I quit getting 'Reason' magazine about 6 years ago for that very reason. They used to promote small government and minimal interference with the population. Then something happened and they took a sharp turn to the left.

That Barr is jumping on the gloBULL warming bandwagon says something about him. He's either flipped or he was never the guy I thought he was.

The full statement is in post 17. The article for the thread is not a fair description of Barr’s statement. Barr is, to be sure, ten years out of date in agreeing that global warming is a reality. In fact, temperatures have been stable or declining for ten years.

But Barr does not agree that CO2 is the cause. He explicitly rejects “internationalist” cap and trade policies.

I’m no Barr fan; but the article is very misleading.

His statement thanks Al Gore for including him in the discussion, asserts that “global warming” is real (although the cause is unknown), and asserts that the free market is the best way to deal with it.

If he hadn’t praised Al Gore for his “leadership”, I’d say his statement almost made sense.
