Hotel Of Doom
Hotel of Doom is a mocking name for one of the biggest and most ugliest structures in the world. The real name of that behemoth is Ryugyong Hotel which is located in Pyongyang, North Korea. This hotel is one of the best examples of awful planning.
The communist regime in North Korea wanted to show the entire world that they can be equal to them in any aspect. And is there a better way to show the world how capable they are then by building a huge structure which will attract rich foreigner tourists and investors. Thats not a new North Koreas government policy, they are doing that for quite a while. The primary goal is to keep their people content and to give them hope of better tomorrow.
Hotel Of Doom
Hotel of doom is the result of their efforts. A building so ugly and hideous that the North Korean government decided to remove it from all official photos by Photoshopping it. The building couldnt be finished due to lack of funds, which was 2% of North Korea GDP at that time. Everything that has been done was in the period of 1987-1992 and building remains a big embarrassment for 20 years. Ryugyong Hotel shows us what can be a result of bad politics and mixing it with bad planning.
The video shows in which state Hotel Of Doom currently is. Its a miracle we can even have this video because North Korea is very strict concerning videotaping the hotel.
For quite some time North Korean government is trying to find new investors for the Hotel Of Doom in Pyongyang. They think that 300 million US dollars would be enough to finish this structure and put it into use. But the quality of concrete is so low that the safety of that building is in question. It is most likely that the Ryugyong Hotel will stay as a permanent reminder of a North Koreas failure. It was a great and beautiful attempt but it is a disappointment of huge proportions at the end.

Is that where they practice the “Iron Lotus”?

Not so much.
Turn the volume down before watching the video. Typical YouTube quality. The sound is blaring and just as hideous.
I’ve been hearing about it for fifteen years. Kinda hard to photoshop out such a colossus.
Everything I read said they had to abandon it because it was so shoddy it could not be finished for any amount of money. It’s too unsafe for occupancy.
That’s not a hotel, it’s the world’s biggest bird house. I think they should be lauded for their environmental concern.
A pyramid with ventilation ???
Hot Mummies with love it...
Is this for real or an onion/scrappleface job? That building looks like something that got rejected from a crack-addicted drunken vegas hotel designer convention panel.
You’ve GOT to be kidding.
I kinda like the design.
Don’t they airbrush it out of most of their scenery shots? I heard that somewhere.
It's built with North Korean concrete, though. Luxury suite?
You first.
now that i re-read the article, i’ve answered my own question.
Ooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo
I have to say it...

I hope their guest finds it to his/her liking.
I was looking at it and thought this was something out of “Battlefield Earth”.
Thoughts for uses:
Blow it up for pieces as part of a sci-fi movie, maybe several. Then the concrete gets put to better uses.
Bird aviary for perigrine falcons, with carbon credits per bird given away to carbon poor Americans so Al Gore shuts up on Global warming
A place to put all the Katrina victims who still can’t find a place to live
Guano factory (largest bird house comment)
Birds’ nest factory (for all the bird nest soup)
btt
May I suggest an addition to your list?
