[Two Years Old Article Dated September 30, 2006] Pope 'led cover-up of child abuse by priests'
Evening Standard (London, UK) ^ | 30 Sept 2006 | Staff Writer

Posted on 07/17/2008 8:24:15 PM PDT by Titus Quinctius Cincinnatus

The Pope played a leading role in a systematic cover-up of child sex abuse by Roman Catholic priests, according to a shocking documentary to be screened by the BBC tonight.

In 2001, while he was a cardinal, he issued a secret Vatican edict to Catholic bishops all over the world, instructing them to put the Church's interests ahead of child safety.

The document recommended that rather than reporting sexual abuse to the relevant legal authorities, bishops should encourage the victim, witnesses and perpetrator not to talk about it. And, to keep victims quiet, it threatened that if they repeat the allegations they would be excommunicated.

The Panorama special, Sex Crimes And The Vatican, investigates the details of this little-known document for the first time. The programme also accuses the Catholic Church of knowingly harbouring paedophile clergymen. It reveals that priests accused of child abuse are generally not struck off or arrested but simply moved to another parish, often to reoffend. It gives examples of hush funds being used to silence the victims.

This explains why nobody in the hierarchy seemed to take the issue seriously - at least until multi-million dollar settlements started to be awarded against dioceses. If the guys at the top are corrupt, it's too much to ask that those further down the food chain won't be.

Wow! It’ll be fascinating to see how much Pope Benedict knew about the child molestation/rape charges and what he did to expose the perpetrators within the Church.

A Buddhist monk has been defrocked for having sex with children, pretending to be a member of the royal family and cheating people out of money, a Cambodian newspaper reported Tuesday.

The liberal media never met a Christian they didn’t try to paint as a creep.

I’m not saying it’s not true - anyone is capable of anything. But I’ll wait and see what the tree shakes out on this one. It wouldn’t be the first time the BBC tried to vilify the pope.

True but the guilty must pay for their sins through prison sentences on earth. Otherwise, we might as well get rid of the criminal justice system and let every rapist/murderer/felon free on the streets.

Nope, it’s more like creeps hide out among religious people, because they know most of them, and the people they tend to hang with, tend to be so goodhearted they can be easily taken advantage of.

If you find a pedophile hiding among religious, he’s not religious himself. He’s a snake in the grass. He didn’t join the priesthood to preach Jesus Christ.

I’m more than willing to see how this shakes out. From reading the article, this was a 1962 document, which the then cardinal supposedly “updated” by “adding” a rule that the Vatican directly control sex abuse allegations. So he didn’t create this document, and I have no idea if he really “added” to it (if the document is legit) or merely established some other policy which those pushing this story are claiming was made part of the 1962 document. This story requires a huge grain of salt, many people are more than willing to accept these claims in McMarten Preschool style.

**But, the Pope is infallible on such issues.**

Not true. Infalliability deals with doctrine and dogma. Please re-educate yourself.

2051 The infallibility of the Magisterium of the Pastors extends to all the elements of doctrine, including moral doctrine, without which the saving truths of the faith cannot be preserved, expounded, or observed.

891 "The Roman Pontiff, head of the college of bishops, enjoys this infallibility in virtue of his office, when, as supreme pastor and teacher of all the faithful - who confirms his brethren in the faith he proclaims by a definitive act a doctrine pertaining to faith or morals. . . . The infallibility promised to the Church is also present in the body of bishops when, together with Peter's successor, they exercise the supreme Magisterium," above all in an Ecumenical Council. When the Church through its supreme Magisterium proposes a doctrine "for belief as being divinely revealed," and as the teaching of Christ, the definitions "must be adhered to with the obedience of faith." This infallibility extends as far as the deposit of divine Revelation itself.

2035 The supreme degree of participation in the authority of Christ is ensured by the charism of infallibility. This infallibility extends as far as does the deposit of divine Revelation; it also extends to all those elements of doctrine, including morals, without which the saving truths of the faith cannot be preserved, explained, or observed.

889 In order to preserve the Church in the purity of the faith handed on by the apostles, Christ who is the Truth willed to confer on her a share in his own infallibility. By a "supernatural sense of faith" the People of God, under the guidance of the Church's living Magisterium, "unfailingly adheres to this faith."

890 The mission of the Magisterium is linked to the definitive nature of the covenant established by God with his people in Christ. It is this Magisterium's task to preserve God's people from deviations and defections and to guarantee them the objective possibility of professing the true faith without error. Thus, the pastoral duty of the Magisterium is aimed at seeing to it that the People of God abides in the truth that liberates. To fulfill this service, Christ endowed the Church's shepherds with the charism of infallibility in matters of faith and morals. The exercise of this charism takes several forms:

Nope, pedophiles understand that people who believe in things not only in the absence of evidence, but even in the face of contradictory evidence, will believe anything. They prey on the gullible and they know where to find them.

Of course they should pay with prison sentences. Absolutely. Make as many pay as possible. They STILL will meet with God one day though and that will be the ultimate. They won’t be able to lie to pay their way out of it. That will be the final judgement!!!

To clarify, the docuent was from 1962 (if it is legit or accurately described). The cardinal in the late 90’s allegedly “added” to that 1962 policy. I have to wonder if the two events 35 years apart were really connected. I suspect those villifying the church are making the conection by claiming the 1962 policy was in effect so anything Ratzinger did in 1996 was an “addition”.

no he is not....he is "infalliable" on certain things spoken from the "chair" ..IOWS....its an official prouncement reguarding serious questions of Catholic teachings.....everything that a Pope says not considered infalliable...

Yeah, I seem to remember when the Pope was in Washington, DC in April 2008, everybody under the sun could not wait to be seen with him. Liberal and conservative politicians, news people, business people, and everyone else wanted to be nextto the pope. I was there and saw it, it was like the Beatles were there. I doubt there would be so many people clamoring to see him if there were any credence to the story.

I will not deny that there have been some evil stuff within All Churches….done by despicable men who followed their “urges” in spite of the teachings of the Church.

The horror is : the ones who do the evil, and the ones who accept the evil, do so in the name of diversity...
